Too many people have needlessly died under the watch of this allegedly "pro-life" President. You do what you feel led to do. I will do what I feel led to do. The blame will be placed on the state and local government, the "unexpected" force of the hurricane or perhaps the outdated defenses the city of New Orleans had installed 35 years to deal with the the usual flooding accompanying a category 3 storm while Kartrina was an "unexpected" category 4 -- But if you watched 60 Minutes last night, the mayor on New Orleans (who is not a career politician until elected in 2003) spoke frankly about the our government's role in saving lives, how he tried to evacuate a city of 500,000 souls who had limited resources, most in abject poverty, and nowhere to go...and how local police and game wardens and private citizens worked around the clock to help those left behind, trapped on rooftops and attics and hospital's ICU units who had to physically move those in critical condition on flooded floors with no lights and no power to higher floors to wait for evacuation by helicopters one at time. One patient died while waiting her turn to be lifted by the helicopter. Yes, New Orleans is changed forever. Yes, the people won't return for years. Yes, they need our help. But where is this democratic government that helps us when disaster happens? Do you remember the huge earthquake in California when expressways collasped? How about the twin towers in New York? And Waco and the abortion clinic bombings? There's such a long list of disasters, I could not name them all -- but I bet each one of you could tell a story that might not have had a happy ending, but did have the full resources of our govenment behind each catastrophe to help the citizens return to normal. It'll be days before all living victims are removed from unlivable areas , & that will be just the first small step. The estimates of the financial pain are beginning to run to $50-100 billion. The other pain is incalculable. I followed a story on Fox today , of a 71 year-old woman who stayed b/c of her " elderly " dog. They had her on the phone , & she didn't seem to realize that she should go out & wave when she hears choppers. Geraldo went out & got her in a boat. No criticism from her , just thanks , & the idea that she was one of the fortunate ones. Made me doubly angry at the power pimps who used their little time in the national media , not to exhort help & cooperation from their constituency , but to play the race & political cards to enhance their own positions. Division over the war is understandable , this is not. Plenty of time to affix responsibility in the aftermath , but the victims of this disaster need all the unity we can muster for the foreseeable future. I read an article about New Orleans' vulnerability just a few months ago , & decided that , had I lived there , I would move posthaste. It's been obvious since at least the 60's. The Bush administration , like all of it's predecessors , rolled the dice , & hoped it wouldn't happen on their watch. They lost. There seemed be no preparation for flood waters that didn't recede after a few days. Of course , I wasn't there , & don't know what unique problems were faced , but I'm guessing that the residents of NO were partly the victims of the kind of wishful thinking that governments & peoples tend to engage in. My donation is going to the American Red Cross. And the planes keep flying right over our heads No matter how loud we shout "Hey, hey, hey !" And we keep waving and waving Our arms in the air But we're all tired out Patty Griffin " Forgiveness " Don - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get MSN Messenger with Video Conversation - FREE. Molly's at the Market shut down the evening of August 28 as Katrina bore down on New Orleans. The storm struck the city with damaging winds that night, then floodwaters began to seep in through levee breaches on the north end of town the next day. Except for wind damage, the Quarter stayed high and dry and so did Molly's and Johnny White's. And both were back in business Monday, August 29, with little apparent damage despite a lack of electricity and running water. "That's our job. That's just what we do," Molly's owner Jim Monaghan, 47, said. Molly's somehow managed to serve iced drinks Sunday to a mixed crowd of die-hard locals, visiting authorities and the media gaggle. Monaghan wouldn't say where he got the ice, and any inquisitors didn't much care. "This is gold," said Sonny Fyler, 45, a builder who chatted over a well-iced vodka and cranberry cocktail. "This is definitely gold. I'm coming in here every day." (See a report on how New Orleans residents vow to party and survive -- 2:12) While Molly's stays open only during daylight hours and caters to a varied clientele, the customers at Johnny White's were different. A late-night visit found a group of dedicated, mostly intoxicated, locals who drank uncooled cocktails by candlelight in the bar at the corner of Orleans and Bourbon in the heart of the Quarter. The open-air joint has no doors, so the proprietors decided to hang on for as long as possible. New Orleans police, normally ambivalent about the public drunkenness that occurs most nights throughout the district, seemed strangely intolerant of it over the weekend even as it seemed they had bigger problems at hand, such as mass deaths and destruction throughout the region. "We have a makeshift jail. You cross this line, and we'll take your ass there," a policeman, drawing an imaginary line at the doorway, screamed at a drunken middle-aged woman who had stumbled out the door momentarily. A few minutes later, the woman collapsed to the floor in an alcoholic stupor. If he can give folks, whether they're locals or visitors, a short respite from the despair gripping New Orleans, Monaghan said his bar on Decatur Street on the Quarter's edge is doing a public service. "I believe this city is coming back," he said. "I wouldn't have stayed open if I didn't think that." - -----Original Message----- From: owner-mad-mission@smoe.org [mailto:owner-mad-mission@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Oldrancocas@aol.com Sent: Monday, September 05, 2005 6:31 PM To: starwheel100@hotmail.com; donhenn@msn.com; mad-mission@smoe.org Subject: Re: MM: Katrina With all due respect you don't know what you are talking about.
