I am sorry but I feel compelled to chirp in here. Your g/f is probably refering to the Times Picayune 5 part article about the dire state of the levy system written in 2002. It laid out a pretty accurate roadmap for everything that happened in the past week. Google it or I am sure you can find it at nola.com. Or perhaps she is refering to FEMA's own publications on the impact of a CAT 5 hurricane on the greate NOLA area. Chertoff was asked about the Times-Pic article by Russert earlier today. I am sure you can find the transcript online. It was pretty shameful I feel as Chertoff is the top guy in charge of protecting us from just such events. While he too says, blame later, save people nownow, it disgusted me, as a resident of the area, to hear him weasel around the sad reality that DHS and FEMA did a very poor job. I seem to recall that on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and heck even a good chunk of Friday, we saw Brown, Chertoff and a bunch of other people on TV saying it was going great while people were still dying. Reporters got in and out of the city using I-10 and the Crescent City Connection all week. Seeing Brown on Friday stating that FEMA knew nothing about the Convention Center until Thursday night was shameful - it was all over the TV by Tuesday - even in Baton Rouge where Brown happened to be. Remember folks - these are the same people who will protect us against terrorist attacks and the aftermath. I knew enough to book a hotel room on Wednesday and get my ass to Memphis on Saturday. Whats going to happen when they (or more importanly we) don't have a 6 day advance notice? Since Don is always nice enough to share lyrics: Louisiana 1927, Randy Newman What has happened down here is the wind have changed Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain Rained real hard and rained for a real long time Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline The river rose all day The river rose all night Some people got lost in the flood Some people got away alright The river have busted through cleard down to Plaquemines Six feet of water in the streets of Evangelne CHORUS Louisiana, Louisiana They're tyrin' to wash us away They're tryin' to wash us away Louisiana, Louisiana They're tryin' to wash us away They're tryin' to wash us away President Coolidge came down in a railroad train With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has done To this poor crackers land." Governor Blanco requested assistance from the President 2 days prior to the event but this President decided to attend a Republican fundraiser, Karl Rove visited with pro-war demonstrators and Condoleeza Rice was shoe shopping in NYC. The supposed liberal media was able to mobilize hundreds of correspondents, cameras and equipment to the Gulf Coast within hours but it took this President five days to send water. Don't preach to me about unity. These were poverty stricken people who were abandoned by their supposedly patriotic government. If these were white people stranded in their homes and Superdome, the President would have moved hell and high water to get them out. If we remove the pressure from this inept administration they will fall back to their indifferent ways. I am personally sick of people making excuses for incompetence in the name of "unity". It was the very lack of unity that contributed to the tragedy. I personally don't want the same dopes who allowed this tragedy to happen by ignoring the warning signs to be leading the rescue effort. They will likely screw that up, too. Feel free to make your donations in private. But don't patronize people for their righteous anger. I fully expect to be kicked of this list for this post. But with the government making FEMA a non cabinet level organization and then cutting their funding and then putting men with NO experience in disaster management in charge, the Red Cross is probably our brightest hope when a disaster rises. The Salvation Army is such an easy target, I won't even go there. Just please don't tell people not to send money to the Red Cross. It is sometimes amazing to be in this soooo capitalistic, consumer based country and to still have an organization like the Red Cross working here. My friends Gayle and Ted do PR and IT (in that order) for the San Diego Red Cross. Neither will probably come up for air for another week or so. And it is all about taking care of those in need. Here is what the Red Cross is doing to help with the relief effort: Fast Facts (As of 5:00 p.m., Sept 4) Red Cross Mass Care: Evacuees - More than 135,500 evacuees are being sheltered by the American Red Cross. Shelters - More than 470 Red Cross shelters are open in 12 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee and Utah, with many more on standby. The Red Cross also is coordinating with other agencies, the mass sheltering operation at the Houston Astrodome, and is working with local partners to find additional facilities in which thousands of evacuees will find a safe, clean and comfortable environment.. Emergency Vehicles - 249 Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) are now in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, with additional ERVs en route to the affected area. The Red Cross is working to engage additional vehicles for food distribution to survivors. Relief Workers - Thousands of Red Cross staff and volunteers across the country and from every part of the organization are working around the clock to serve the public need. More than 5,000 Red Crossers have left their families to serve in affected areas already, and the Red Cross is moving more than 600 additional workers into affected areas every day. Feeding - The Red Cross is working closely with several partners, including the Southern Baptist Convention, the Adventists and Second Harvest to provide emergency food to survivors and responders. In coordination with the Southern Baptists, preparations are underway to serve nearly 500,000 hot meals each day. More than 2.6 million meals and more than 3.3 million snacks have been served to survivors of Hurricane Katrina to-date. Health & Preventative Care - The Red Cross is working with government and health services partners to develop health strategies and preventative measures to help the public and relief workers cope with the serious public health emergency. For additional information, visit www.redcross.org or www.cdc.gov. American Red Cross Urges Public Health Precautions As storm-weary residents of the Gulf Coast region return to begin rebuilding their homes and their lives, the American Red Cross stresses that health and safety must be a paramount concern. Note: Media is encouraged to contact their local Red Cross chapter to learn how it is responding to the disaster. Reuniting Families: The Red Cross, with support of the worldwide Red Cross Movement, has launched a Web site and hotline to help reunite loved ones. Online - Persons looking for loved ones can go to www.redcross.org and click on "Family Links Registry" to register yourself, a missing relative or view the existing list of registrants. Registered - To date, more than 44,000 people have registered on the "Family Links" Web site. Hotline - Those who do not have Internet access should call toll-free 1-877-LOVED-1S (1-877-568-3317). bruce - -----Original Message----- From: owner-mad-mission@smoe.org [mailto:owner-mad-mission@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Paul Russell Sent: Monday, September 05, 2005 1:23 PM To: mad-mission@smoe.org Subject: MM: Send donations to other organizations As I just emailed Don, I would not advise sending donations to the Red Cross. Local gov. is the first line of defense. The mayor of NO failed in every way. On to Governor. Failed completely. FEMA National Gov. failed as well. Every person that wants to lay the blame on the Bush administration is just exposing themselves for what they are. People using a horrible situation to make their political point of view. Shame on YOU! But since you started I'll be happy to educate this worthless POS "starwheel" or "moon unit" or whatever your f-ing name is. It was not until Bush begged the Mayor of NO to evacuate the people, that this order was given with only 24 hours to spare by the yahoo mayor of NO. This, after three days earlier, being told by the head of the national weather to "Please get everyone out. OK two days of getting people out, lost, by the great Mayor of NO. There are 600 School and Public buses in parking lots up to the motor in water that could have been used to get people out. I would also like to remind people that two other states were clobbered as well. They handled the situation much much better. But then, these two States are run by Republicans and not the "give me give me give me" Dems from a back asswards town like NO. Take your "I hate Bush crap" and save it for one of your worthless causes. Using it on the backs of these poor people is truly repugnant. You and the rest of your silly ilk make me puke. ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V9 #159 *********************************
