It'll be days before all living victims are removed from unlivable areas , & that will be just the first small step. The estimates of the financial pain are beginning to run to $50-100 billion. The other pain is incalculable. I followed a story on Fox today , of a 71 year-old woman who stayed b/c of her " elderly " dog. They had her on the phone , & she didn't seem to realize that she should go out & wave when she hears choppers. Geraldo went out & got her in a boat. No criticism from her , just thanks , & the idea that she was one of the fortunate ones. Made me doubly angry at the power pimps who used their little time in the national media , not to exhort help & cooperation from their constituency , but to play the race & political cards to enhance their own positions. Division over the war is understandable , this is not. Plenty of time to affix responsibility in the aftermath , but the victims of this disaster need all the unity we can muster for the foreseeable future. I read an article about New Orleans' vulnerability just a few months ago , & decided that , had I lived there , I would move posthaste. It's been obvious since at least the 60's. The Bush administration , like all of it's predecessors , rolled the dice , & hoped it wouldn't happen on their watch. They lost. There seemed be no preparation for flood waters that didn't recede after a few days. Of course , I wasn't there , & don't know what unique problems were faced , but I'm guessing that the residents of NO were partly the victims of the kind of wishful thinking that governments & peoples tend to engage in. My donation is going to the American Red Cross. And the planes keep flying right over our heads No matter how loud we shout "Hey, hey, hey !" And we keep waving and waving Our arms in the air But we're all tired out Patty Griffin " Forgiveness " Don ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Sep 2005 00:51:47 EDT From: FlamingRed74@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Katrina Hey Don, So weird that you posted this. Just yesterday Rhianna (my g/f) was telling me about this article she read online. The article says that a few years ago there was a "prediction" that N.O. would be hit with a hurricane in the near future. The article then went on to blame the Bush administration for reducing FEMA's funding by 40 some odd percent to invest in the war with Iraq. Like we all knew this tragedy was about to take place. Oddly enough (or not), this article forgot to mention that the surveys of N.O. not being able to withstand greater than a Cat. 3 were done over 40 years ago, and no action has been taken since... which brings to light what you said, everyone has been rolling the dice for over 40 years now. I can't figure out any reasons (other than selfish reasons) for anyone to be laying blame anywhere at this point. Anyone with any sort of power to help should be focusing efforts to help those in need.. not wasting time directing attention away from what should be the task at hand when so many people are in need of help. .. just thought it was strange that you posted almost our identical conversation here on the list.
