My week was out of control.) Possibly, one of my favorite things about being a music lover is the feeling I get when I hear a voice for the first time that reaches deep inside and touches my soul. You know the feeling. Weve all felt it. You cant love music and not have felt this feeling. Its as if you are enveloped by a warm blanket and whisked back to the womb. Its as comforting a feeling as you can get, like seeing an old friend for the first time in years or holding your child in your arms. In music, that feeling doesnt come around often, but when it does, it never leaves you. Last week I had one of those moments as I pressed play on the new self-titled Brandi Carlile CD (Red Ink/Columbia). As the opening notes to Follow flowed from my speakers, they were followed by this voice that was reminiscent of several but completely unlike any voice I had ever heard. There was the grit and grizzle of a Bonnie Raitt, the beauty and grace of an Emmylou Harris, the sexy growl of a Stevie Nicks and the balls of a Lucinda Williams all rolled up into one perfectly new voice that mesmerized me. She may be a 23-year-old from Washington state but she has an old soul and her voice and songs go way beyond her years. I have literally marked every song on the record to play on my show and have listened to the CD upwards of 20 times in the last week. It has gone with me everywhere I have been and I have played it for any and everyone who would listen. My favorite song on Brandi Carlile changes from day to day because every time I think that one is the best, another one comes up and convinces me otherwise. Today it is Throw It All Away, yesterday it was Fall Apart Again, the day before that it was What Can I Say. These are some powerful songs that will move you. Since I debuted her on the show yesterday, I have been flooded with questions about her music from listeners. I was in line at the DMV today renewing my license and this guy yells out, Hey Reg, Brandi CarlileI gotta have it. Thats what I call a positive reaction. And get this, she produced the CD herself with the twin brothers (Tim and Phil Hanseroth) that play in her band and co-write her songs. Dont be fooled by the name. It might sound like it belongs to a pop princess but dont judge so quickly, Brandi Carlile has made a classic record that should have music lovers everywhere buzzing. Check her out at www.brandicarlile.com (you can listen to a couple of her songs there).
