Bad directions , gridlock , no rooms ready until regular check in time ( a rarity ) , & smoking rooms full. A couple of hard stops for inattentive pedestrians walking in front of me. Overcame the obstacles & arrived at Karla's. Hung out there for awhile , then left to check in to the hotel & check out the venue. Hooked up with the Pattyfest crowd for dinner , & after passing on two hour waits at the first two places , ended up at the Fox & Hounds , where Karla & I were headed anyway , for the middleweight championship fight. Karla & I stayed at the bar to reserve good seats , while the 10 Pattyfest folks tabled. Good card , with 3 pre-lims & an excellent , controversial fight. Back to the hotel where Pattyfest was in full swing. They left after dinner to play & sing mostly Patty music. A great way to celebrate Patty's talents. Too many names to remember or list , but the main participants were Smit ( life of the party ) , Elise , Melissa & Gillian.I even sang along a bit myself. My apologies to anyone who might feel slighted at not being mentioned. Also had multimedia set up , with camera on the room , & internet chat going on. As it grew late , planned venue time was pushed back from 12 to 2. Ate at a mall food court & I'm guessing we got there around 3:30 -4. Condensed the crowd into 3 cars & Karla & I rode with Keith & son Chris , with Karla navigating. I was again a victim of sensory overload & Karla's navigating skills were a godsend. She told Keith that one of the turns was just past Hooter's , & he came up with the best line of the day when he told Chris to watch for Hooter's - the bar : ) Got a call from Dave shortly after arriving , who was also a victim of bad directions. We were about to guide him back to the hotel , then to the venue from there , a couple of miles & many turns , when the organizer overheard us , & noted that he was on an adjacent street. He & Rhianna arrived shortly. We all gathered up front & hoped the rain would hold off. No such luck ! Got a hard , sustained rain , & just as it seemed to be passing , one more cycle. Big thanks to Bill , who brought a huge tarp. The umbrellas & the tarp came out , with most of the Pattyfest folks under the tarp , singing in the rain. When they went into " Kumbaya " I was wondering if they had started a campfire under there. The rain was pervasive enough that most of us got soaked anyway. My money is still damp. Expecting , & got to hear the soundcheck , but alas , no Patty. The show was touch & go for awhile. Hard rain or any lightning in the area would have scrubbed it , although someone said it may have moved inside. As in Pittsburgh , the all day clouds cleared almost on cue as start time approached , with the moon in full view near the stage each time Patty did the moon song. Hmmm... does Patty have an ally in Divine Providence ? Charlie & Julie Ott , Murph & Justine , Evil & Sandy , & Darcie & friends all showed up before start time. Set list : Sad Mood Useless Desires Love Throw a Line Florida Rain Stolen Car The Long Ride Free ( solo ) The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home When it Don't Come Easy No Bad News !! Making Pies Top of the World Icicles Falling Encore Peaceful Valley Tomorrow Night Very confused now , about the solos , both here & in Pgh. Thought Doug was playing on " Free " but it seems that he was just tuning his guitars. Wrote down solo on " Moon " as he continued tuning , but he joined in the song after awhile. Very distracting , but high humidity plays hell with the tuning. Agree with Murph that Patty was in special voice this night. Tried to put my finger on it , & my best guess is that she seemed very relaxed , which added more sensuality than usual , but her tonal quality on the more intense notes also seemed a notch better than usual , giving PV more of a gospel sense that previous versions. Most of the songs were better than recent versions , with the added sensuality really standing out on " Free " , SC , TN , IF & " Moon " . During a pause , the audience started shouting requests & someone threw the usual " Freebird " in there. Patty started singing " bye bye , it's been a sweet love " then stopped & said " see , you don't even recognize it " : ) In ironic timing , she then went into " Free ". Broke a string on TLR , re-tuned , & started again. Had a sense that something was missing , but the vocals were great. Patty mentioned getting bit once in Pgh , & someone shouted " you have to eat more garlic " . Patty was amused & said " oh , is that the Pgh solution ? Eating more garlic ? " Bugs were much worse here ,. with her saying one time " the bugs seem to think I"m a screen door. I wish they'd go find a screen door. " Fans brought up a couple of repellants , & she called the two young ones who brought her favorite brand on stage to give them due credit. Then complained that the bugs seemed to like fair skinned people like her better , & attacked the untreated area on the back of her neck. Thanks for pushing thru it all , & treating us to a great show , Patty. Agree with many others that NBN stood out like a sore thumb. I usually like it better with full band , & can't put my finger on it , but I caught up in it more than ever. I usually go with the slower , more sensual ones as my fav , but NBN definitely took the honors here. I still sense a single there. Patty dedicated WIDCE to Murph & Justine in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary , & mentioned his selfless work on behalf of her favorite charity that works to remove unexploded land mines throughout the world , which maim & kill many people , of which an inordinate amount are children. Had to look it up for those who might be interested in more info ; " Campaign for a Landmine Free World " , one of many conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. www.vvaf.org . Murph heads an annual drive for Patty's birthday on March 16th. Took Karla home & headed back to the hotel for more Pattyfest activities. Most were ready to head out by then , & ended up in Dave's ( not of Dave & Rhianna , but Dave from Texas , as is Rachel ) room with him , Elise & Rachel to talk & drink into the wee hours. Since there are only a few I didn't mention yet , I'll duly note that Nicole & sister Allie were there for the concert eve sing-along. Smit's wife Bunny had gone to bed before I arrived. Rhonda joined us at the venue , & Chris , who I had met at Birchmere came up right before the start. Great concert . Great weekend. Looks like it'll be awhile until my next one.
