Sat in a diner a mile or two away , & watched a 15-20 minute downpour around 5:30. Finally ran out in it , & it stopped a few minutes after getting in my car. Was surprised to find that the ground wasn't soaked when I got back , & more surprised later when I found out that it hadn't rained there. We just got a few drops here & there as the clouds were moving out.Came back in time to catch a lot of the sound check , & it sounded promising. Caught a snatch of " Riding with the Amazons " & was expecting to hear it , but not to be. Also heard what I thought was the opening to " Stolen Car " with Doug & Patty on guitar , & they stopped before any lyrics. Sounded great , & was expecting that too , but Doug didn't come in until well into the song during the set. Was joined by my oldest daughter for the first time ( younger one has attended a number of shows ). Her impression ; " nice " : ) She did like " No Bad News ". Cathy & hubby Guy joined us up front , & saw Dawn keeping her Patty streak alive. Hasn't missed a local Patty show in the years since she discovered her. Set List : Sad Mood Useless Desires Love Throw a Line Florida The Long Ride Stolen Car Be Careful Free When it Don't Come Easy Making Pies Top of the World Backwater Blues No Bad News Icicles Falling The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home (solo ) Encore Tomorrow Night So , Max Baer , PA Supreme Court Justice , introduces Patty , & goes into long praise of folk music. He mentions Seegar , Guthrie , Joni Mitchell & others , & praises Patty as one of the ones to whom the torch is being passed. So Patty naturally goes into a great blues song , Sam Cooke's " Sad Mood ". Recognized it immediately & loved it. Patty is far more bluesy than folksy. My daughter's description of her was more country ?? Must have been TLR. With Patty's penchant for Sam Cooke , & bluesy , soulful songs , I'm hoping that she'll do his " A Change is Gonna' Come " someday. The blues songs , NBN & "Moon" were the highlights for me. Her vocals sounded a little strained in parts of BC , & she closed TOTW with a lot of ooo oooing instead of Doug's usual solo. Sounded good. Liked TN , but was disappointed with the one song encore. Patty mentioned that she was staying in Kennywood ( local town ) , & liked telling people that she was playing in South Park & staying in Kennywood. Distracting crowd , with singers , talkers , walkers & running children. I think a good part of the big audience were there for an evening out with background music , rather than for Patty. My guesstimate would be 1000-2000. See you in KOP And it's hard to be free And freedom is just me And the waves on the terrible sea Patty Griffin " Free " Don ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V9 #146 *********************************
