Also Eliza Gilkyson, Joan Baez, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Tim O'Brien, Steve Earle and many others. This is 2 days of free music- mostly Bluegrass- with 3 stages in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Oct 1 & 2 I think- first weekend in Oct anyway. I went 2 yrs ago and really enjoyed it- meeting Jamie, Evan & Paul there. I hope to make it again this time. Here is a little story. Evan pointed out Warren Hellman to me. He is the benefactor of this festival. So, I went up to him and thanked him for doing this for us and asked him if he was familiar with Patty Griffin. He said "No". I just happened :) to have a copy of the '97 Birchmere concert-solo acoustic- one of my faves- with me and slid it into his pocket and told him she was my fave singer- hoping that maybe he would get into her and she would be at the fest another year. I don't know if he ever listened to it or if EmmyLou's influe! nce is why Patty is on the list now, but I am enjoying the thought that maybe I introduced him to Patty's music. :) So, anyone within driving distance or who needs a reason to go to SF, this fest is a good one. The scenery and weather is beautiful. I remember I wrote reviews every day of the last one I went to. I wonder if she will do any other shows in CA while she is out here. Never enough. It's great news about Patty playing this festival, but for those who are planning to attend, a word of warning is in order. I attended the HSBF for the first time last year. Overall it was a disappointment. Not because of the music--which was great--but because of the audience. Any "free" music festival brings out a LOT of people who are going simply because it's free--including many who are selfish, rude and have very little respect for the music, the artists or the fellow attendees around them. Truth is, they just don't appreciate something they get for free. My girlfriend and I got stuck in the back of a couple of performances areas. We had brought blankets and beach chairs for the day. It was EXTREMELY annoying to find that nearly everyone around us was gabbing and laughing loudly throughout the music sets, totally oblivious to the artists on stage. Many parents were letting their small children run wild, making lots of noise. Others allowed their dogs to roam freely. Although we were in a large group who had been sitting for hours, crowds of people thought nothing of standing in front of us and completely blocking our view, despite my frequent requests to "PLEASE! SIT DOWN!" I noticed that the ambiance was MUCH different towards the front of the stages. Those people had come early for good seats. These were the true music lovers--they were quiet during the sets and very respectful of the artists and each other. The lesson I learned was this: if you're going to the HSBF just to hang out, fine--you probably won't care about the music very much anyway. But if you're going to truly ENJOY the music, GET THERE AS EARLY AS YOU CAN so that you can sit near the front of the stages--and join those who are there for the same reason... See you there! Ciao for now, Jon Bryant ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jul 2005 21:41:04 -0400 From: dlwildflower@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival: BEWARE! It is true about the crowd- there are thousands of people there- was it 20 thousand? Last time- 2 yrs ago, friends saved me a seat up front, so it was ok. Bring your own food and snacks also as the crowd is so huge that buying food at the venders is out of the question if you do sit up front. I had to choose one stage and just stay there regardless of who was playing the other stages. It was still a wonderful festival- I hated to miss it last year.( I went to Yosemite that week.) We should try to meet up and plan to sit together- we can discuss it more as the time approaches.
