Something about it made me start thinking about how it's probably about her divorce and just made me really sad but appreciate all the more the wonderfulness of the song! The venue (I'll post a photo) was like a church or school hall so I was a little worried but the sound was good and Patty seemed to enjoy herself. Bit of a step down from the Ryman or the Lyric though! Icicles was the starter, and the one I had in my head for the ride home. It's become one of my favourite songs purely from hearing it live. It made my girlfriend cry :o) Wade In the Water - JD played the chairs. No, really. He had two percussion stick things and played a stack of chairs with them, hee! Seem to have forgotten to take a photo though, sorry. Not a fan of Useless Desires or Love Throw a Line, though I have tried and so my mind wandered a little here. However they are 2 of my girlfriend's favourite songs and she really enjoyed them. Not the best she played last night, but still beyond the level of most singers. Cold as It Gets was apparently going to be called Nazi hunter but she thought better of it. I meant to ask about this when I met her, but any pre-planned thoughts flew out of my head and we discussed chocolate instead! On her solos she did Long ride Home, picked up a new guitar and started talking to the audience (about how she'd been to Sheffield before and didn't realise how beautiful it was I believe; she always connects well with the audience, and more importantly has learned not to talk about a football team, lol) and then said "what did I pick up this guitar for? Must have had something in mind" and then played Mary. Looked very thoughtful at the beginning, thinking about her grandmother maybe. I wonder how often you can play a song before it becomes a song and not as deep for you as it originally was. She played Stolen Car at a previous request from someone in the venue whose friends were there and had flown back from Paris seeing Bruce Springsteen. Rain was as beautiful as ever and silver Bell rocked once more, despite the prominently over 50 age bracket. Had there not been a couple of ten year olds I would have been the youngest there! After this someone asked if she would play a request (they did it very politely) and several people chimed in. I restrained myself in the hope of nobody's crying. She listened, laughed and said "how about this one" and played what she had had in mind anyway - Top Of The World! Which was indeed on top form. The two Smokey songs were great again, and it is really clear that the band love to play them, the smile at each other a lot and all grin broadly. Though it has to be said that JD Foster (bass player) seems to love all the songs and lives in a happy world of bass and chairs throughout. Then Nobody's Crying, which was beautiful and transporting, taking you into the hope of the song, which is my favourite quality of most of the dark songs, that there is still hope there and that is probably why I have enjoyed patty so much since the first song of hers that ever grabbed me; Not Alone. They left to a semi-standing ovation and a very happy crowd. We stayed after the show to meet her and as mentioned we talked about chocolate (I asked if she enjoyed the stuff I gave her on Sunday) and she pointed out that American chocolate tasted like Vaseline, lol. She remembered that when she was in England last the Belgians were trying to stop us calling our chocolate "chocolate" because it didn't have enough milk in or something. I asked for a photo but didn't want to be in it so she requested that my gf be in it too, lol. Then the venue had left spare posters out so I went back and asked if it would be cheeky to get her to sign that even though we'd already had her turn (planning to be very quick and feeling guilty) but then we had a discussion on what a cool word that is, how to spell it etc. So I didn't have any conversations with Patty about Patty, just random things because that seems to be how I work. On the plus side she seemed very happy to meet the 10 or so people who waited, chatted to everyone for a while and seemed much more confident than when I met her before. Then we got the band to sign our poster too. I shall have to post a pic so you can help me decipher what Michael put! All in all, a great night! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jun 2005 14:19:05 +0100 From: "Sarah" Subject: MM: Glasgow review Not up to my usual standards but I suspect that will be appreciated by most ;o) Set List 1. Wade In The Water 2. No Bad News 3. When It Don't Come Easy 4. Useless Desires 5. Long Ride Home 6. Cold As It Gets 7. Martin Luther King Song 8. Be Careful 9. Silver Bell 10. Love Throw A Line 11. Standing 12. Top Of The World 13. Making Pies 14. Stolen Car 15. Truth No. 2 Patty was really funny in Glasgow. I loved her attempt at a Scottish accent and her stories of confusion while going around Glasgow. My friend was glad the story was of buying chocolate because she worried Patty was anorexic as she is so tiny. We got there early and managed to get on the front row Smile Marmalade (what's your policy on your real name being used?) it was fun to meet you Smile I will email the photo of you with Patty. Plus any other photos you want. I'll upload them tomorrow as I'm working tonight. The support act, whose name I have forgotten, was very good. Again, seemed nervous and kept her eyes closed throughout but she was good. I was sad to have a shortened set - the venue was used as a club afterwards and so they gave Patty a tight curfew, which is mean! Still, she gave an excellent show to a warm and responsive audience. People often clapped when their favourite songs came on, although I was bemused by the amount of people who came in and headed for the chairs at the side, which gave little view of the stage. No Icicles but a highlight for me was probably the MLK song which made it back onto the setlist. This is a truly beautiful song, great imagery made all the more poignant by Patty's explanations of it's meaning. Although I still ponder on what exactly the mountains are! I love that this is possible with her songs. she said Cold as it Gets isn't about Bush but she dreamt that night that Bush killed her cat, LMAO! The sound wasn't great, during a few songs I could only her her voice from her, not through the speakers. Generally when the electric guitar and drums were going, in Truth #2 and Don't Come Easy, which was sad. After the show Roy was kind enough to give hints about how to meet Patty (my friend from Minnesota had arranged his trip around her shows) and so after waiting for a while Patty came out and chatted with them all while I took pics. Doug said they were all pretty exhausted, bless him! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jun 2005 18:52:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Roger Thornton Subject: Re: MM: Lizz Wright Yes, and in fact her previous record (which was jazz), "Salt" is also incredible. I actually haven't heard the newer one. What is she doing now if not jazz? She's really something and I will definetely be picking up her new record as soon as I can afford it. That and the new Shelby Lynne (does anyone else here have it?). Excited for the fall, but not the summer--Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi and Sheryl Crow all have records hitting in September. Shawn Colvin's newest will hit Valentine's Day next year, which is a long wait, but will no doubt be worth it. If only we had a new Patty date on the horizon...or even a general idea... Thanks to those that played along with the Patty 'favorites' collection game. Not as popular as the 'perfect record' thread, but had some very interesting responses. Night all!
