She made you dance and she made your soul ache. Quite a combination! The setlist was almost exactly what I would have chosen. the photos are at http://photobucket.com/albums/y298/flamingredgirl/ None are great, being in a bad place for photos but the best place for experience. During the best songs I was unable to even contemplate taking photos anyway. However my review begins before the actual concert. Being a geek, determined to get to the front, we arrived at 5.30 after walking from the train station. (Highlight: a sign saying this was a no tolerance zone for alcohol, with 3 drunk homeless people a metre away!) Had a drink in the bar and then went upstairs to the venue (there were 2 concerts that day, in two different floors) where a nice woman said we could wait. I stole a Patty poster, as did my two friends. It was something of an overkill to be there that early as no-one else turned up until 6.45 but we got to hear the sound check, and actually saw some of as well from outside the door. However the sound was competing with the support band for Emergenza downstairs, which was, I suppose, thrash metal. The actual band sounded quite good but the support band were just noise, making Patty seem all the more beautiful. She did Love Throw a Line, When it Don't Come Easy (different improv to the actual concert) and another song, but I was on the phone to Ian so I can't remember what that was. He made it just in time to get to the front of the queue with us, so yay him! I was the first one in, stood right at the front, on the right hand side of the mic. Scarily close! Isabelle Heyworth was the support act, web address her name.com. She was extremely nervous, seemed to expect to be crap. She wasn't. I did like her songs, although her voice was a little high for me. She handed out flyers afterwards, before Patty came on. Patty came on with Wade in the water. As has been said, her top had love written on the back but she moved too fast for me to get a photo. Doug was wearing a black shirt with red flowers, and jeans. I have photos of all the band members. Michael Longoria smiled at me every so often, and poor JD Foster was dripping in sweat thanks to wearing a t-shirt under a shirt, and covered poor Michael with sweat every so often. Patty frequently commented that we were hot, but JD looked much hotter. At one point she said we were very quiet (during songs anyway, every song was greeted with thunderous applause at the end) and somebody said it was respect. She said something along the lines of "I was worried you had all passed out from the heat" but that it had made her feel like she was back in Texas. She was very cute, and mentioned that she stayed in Manchester for a week last time she came to England. She herself must have superhuman abilities because she didn't seem to sweat. I didn't make a note of the setlist, although I do have Michael's (courtesy of Doug - thank you!) http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y298/flamingredgirl/setlist.jpg I loved the new songs. They were brilliant and I think among the best she has done. The Martin Luther King song was just achingly beautiful and very evocative. I didn't know the backstory of him coming back to Memphis even though he "knew he was a dead man". "I climbed the mountain because you asked me to". It was just so beautiful. I'm sorry about the frequency with which I will use that word. Wow was the word I used at the time. Stunningly good. Don't Come Easy - wonderful, even better than the album. I'm looking forward to hearing it with my love on Tuesday :) Useless Desires - I have no clear recollection! Long Ride is on the setlist and I have a vague recollection of it, she mentioned her last tour for that album, and supporting Billy Bragg. We cheered, as we were there, lol. Someone requested Sweet Lorraine, she smiled and said "ah requests!" and so I asked her not not play it as she never plays requests, but sadly my reverse psychology didn't work. Rain was a surprise and wonderful! I had hoped she would play it and she did, appropriately enough after the giant thunderstorm earlier in the day. I can best describe it as haunting and transporting, I seemed to get into the song more with her right in front of me, and she seemed carried away on it too. Her solos, Flaming Red rocked, as ever! It was the bluesy into rock version, she was smiling like she had a secret just before the segue into rock, as was I because I knew what was coming! She lost a string, shoved it out of the way and carried on, looking highly amused, as did Doug hiding in the corner. He took the guitar off and then a very loud noise was heard, highly amusing. Said she had to change her plans as that guitar was out of action, so I wonder what she was going to play. Silver Bell!!!! I couldn't help but clap when it started, though not loudly. Shorter and quite different from the album version but yayayayayay! That was one of my top 5 at least songs that I wanted and she played almost all of them. I never thought I'd hear it. It rocked! She clearly enjoyed it too. Love Throw a Line.. Not my fave song but still great nonetheless. Standing. Doug and JD on backing vocals. Much deeper and less gospel than the album version but it was still good. Must mention Michael's percussion - it added a lot. His shell instrument thing shed half it's shells during (I think) this song. He played the triangle at some point, which I thought would be about the best I could play but he added complications even to the simplest of instruments! Top Of the World! I went into an annoying place in my head comparing it to the Dixie Chicks live arrangement, which overall IK think I prefer, but only because of the violins. JD's stamping, being next to my head, also distracted me somewhat but still, it was a brilliant song, heartfelt and above the level of any other singer. Truth #2 rocked, they all seemed to enjoy it a great deal, as did the dancing audience. Then she said she would end (cue masses of groans) with a little song about pies, as Manchester knows about factories! Much yelling and cheering ensued and they returned to do more songs. Icicles stood out for me. It was beautiful (!), evocative and yes, "cooling" as she said. I don't think I've ever really gotten into that song before but I hope she plays it again because it was another one of those songs that hit me in the heart (along with TOTW, MLK song, one of her other new songs which all made me worry I would cry and I think parts of When It don't Come Easy). Then she did some Smokey Robinson songs - two I think, which the band clearly loved and I got a tiny bit of video of. I will post the good photos later when I have chance because I must go to work soon. I got home at 4am after a slight mishap with trains. Thank goodness for the music in Piccadilly station although it was still 2 of the most boring hours of my life! Ian, it was lovely to meet you though sad that it was so short. Anyone fancy coming to Glasgow with me so we can meet again? Lol. His good nature in not wanting me to have a wasted ticket was certainly paid back by Patty. I won't say she was the best I've ever seen her because I was blown away last time too. But maybe she was. She seemed more confident. And thinner, lol. I did give her M+M's (as per Mad Mission tradition) and some nice English chocolate though, so maybe she will eat it! She smiled her thanks at me when they came on for the encore. Not sure how she knew it was me as I didn't notice her see me put them there 10 songs before, lol. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Jun 2005 02:54:39 +0000 From: "Charles Ott" Subject: RE: MM: Manchester review Sarah - Fabulous pics!
