(was: The perfect record?) MM, I have been off the list for quite a while, but I am back on it now and glad to see it still goes on just as before. I don't know if this has been discussed before, but, I absolutely LOVE The Rowing Song. It is so simple and sweet and lonely and gorgeous. I think it's perfect. I love the trumpet and tuba. (A tuba for heaven's sake!) Anyway, I love it and a couple of other people I know adore it as well. Recently, however, another friend told me how awful she thought the song was. She thought it was kinda stupid; she thought it was Patty's worst and not worthy of a Patty album. I think she is out of her mind, but what does everyone else think? I saw Patty in Albany a few weeks ago. She was fantastic. I couldn't believe she played Silver Bell--it was rockin. Her performance of Standing revitalized that song for me. (I liked it on SB and was glad to see it on ID, but I was a little tired of it.) At the concert, I was hoping she would play The Rowing Song, but alas she didn't. I've been looking at the set lists from the concert reviews and haven't seen it included in any of her recent concerts. Has she been playing this live? Perfect record: There is not one I dislike, but I am really partial to Flaming Red. I think ID is pretty great though. If one Patty record is perfect, it has to be 1,000 Kisses. Other candidates in my opinion for perfection: Bruce Springsteen Born to Run Joni Mitchell Blue The Who Quadrophenia Sam Phillips A Boot and A Shoe Rosanne Cash Interiors Bob Dylan Blood on the Tracks Steve Earle El Corazon Elvis Costello This Year's Model, My Aim is True, or possibly Get Happy or Imperial Bedroom - wow, he's pretty good. As far as Patty's concerned, LWG is not perfect. It's likely my least favorite Patty record, other than possibly Impossible Dream. Not exactly sure I can identify why ID seems a tad weaker than the other Patty records, but I think it's a combination of the sequencing and the production. It just kinda drags. Odd thing is, it has several of my favorite Patty songs on it, and her writing is as amazing as ever, as is her voice. I just think the record that most captures her greatness is 1,000 Kisses. Stolen Car is the weakest track on the record, imo, and it's still damn good. I LOVE the other covers; Mil Besos and Tomorrow Night could be the best two songs on the record, and the originals are clearly 6 of the best songs Patty's written. Truly an impressive effort. ___________________________________________________________________ Get Juno Platinum for as low as $4.97/month! Unlimited Internet Access with 250MB of Email Storage. I agree that 1,000 Kisses is a perfect record. I also have to admit that I tend to skip Stolen Car, but I think it fits with the kind of storytelling that she's doing on this CD. What I love--and have found really inspiring about 1,000 Kisses--is Patty's creation of such distinct speakers (in the poetic sense) and her willingness to cross-dress to tell these stories. She continues this on Impossible Dream, but I feel like part of the point of 1,000 Kisses is to inhabit different points of view and experiences from different times and places. I think Stolen Car is another example of this, even though it's not as strong musically.
