Although 10,000 Kisses is pretty close, too. Other Perfect Discs: Joni Mitchell: "Blue"; Indigo Girls "Rites of Passage"; Bic Runga "Beautiful Collision"; Holly Palmer "Holly Palmer"; Travis: "The Man Who"; Jeff Buckley: "Grace"... but my favorite album (which I think is absolutely perfect) has to be 'til tuesday: "Everything's Different Now" rick living vicariously through all of you who get to see Patty live. Fortunately, I'm leaving Florida for Brooklyn in August and y'know... everyone plays NYC! rick slept here ... i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm six feet of sorry how could he watch me treading water? and why did he give up so completely? how did it all become simply fodder for bad poetry? -me, for a change. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 May 2005 23:03:35 -0400 From: "rockerpgh _" Subject: Re: MM: RE: The perfect record? I am sure to get heat for this but I think Living With Ghosts is Patty's weakest album. 1,000 Kisses is the strongest and most "cohesive", production and songwriting wise. One of the things I love about Patty and her music is the progression. She is becoming a better songwriter as the years go by. Although I will say that Flaming Red has the weakest tracks (specifically the lyrics of One Big Love) of any Patty albums. Even with that track the album is stronger than Living with Ghosts. (BTW Living with Ghosts was the first Patty album I was introduced to.) I loved Impossible Dream the first time I heard it. The only complaint I have with the album is the inclusion of Florida. Good song but interrupts the flow of the album for me. The individual songs are some of Patty's best and I'm surprised no one has said so. Kite, Useless Desire, Top of the World, Rowing Song, When it Don't Come Easy...I could name nearly every song on the album! Still, 1,000 Kisses is the Perfect Patty album. Not a weak spot to be found; incredible songwriting, intimate production, and terrific instrumentation from the players. OK, other perfect albums: Aerosmith: Rocks U2: The Joshua Tree Caedmon's Call: 40 Acres Phil Keaggy: The Wind and the Wheat / Beyond Nature Trashcan Sinatras: Weightlifting Elvis Costello: OH MAN, this is tough but I would say King of America and Armed Forces but This Years Model and Trust would be close too. Sundays: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic Lost Dogs: Gift Horse Sam Phillips: Cruel Inventions (possibly A Boot and A Shoe - time will tell) Jeremy -----Original Message----- From: owner-mad-mission@smoe.org [mailto:owner-mad-mission@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Roger Thornton Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2005 3:37 PM To: Mad-Mission@smoe.org Subject: RE: MM: RE: The perfect record? Wow, This topic generated a lot of discussion. Very interesting indeed that each of Patty's records is SOMEBODY'S favorite on this list. Looks like Living With Ghosts is the end-all fav. Probably because of all of Patty's original classics, which for some reason she tends to ignore now. I will admit that this is the first Patty album that sold me. And I've been buying ever since. It'd be awesome if she did another acoustic record. Can I ask those of you who've said ID was a bit of a disappointment if there's a specific reason why? There may not even be anything easy to put into words that didn't hit it for you, but perhaps there is. Just curious. I will admit it didn't hit me immediately like the other ones did, but this one doesn't have as clear a mood or tone. It's perhaps her first entirely eclectic (don't beat me up for that comment if you disagree) record. For me, all of her other albums tend to have an overriding tone that carries from song to song that makes the album a co! hesive unit. What I like best about this one is that it's all over the place. As far as other recent near (but not) perfect records go, I'm inclined to include several not mentioned thus far: K.D. Lang's Hymns of the 49th Parallel, featuring works by Canadian singer-songwriters is breathtaking (first time I heard her sing Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelulah' I cried--it also features great Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Jane Sibbery and Ron Sexsmith covers). I love Shelby Lynne's 'Identity Crisis', Lucinda Williams 'World Without Tears', Patti Scialfa's '23rd Street Lullaby', Kathleen Edwards 'Failer', Mary Gauthier 'Mercy Now', and list-member's Zachary Scot Johnson 'Moment of Clarity' (which features a 'Top of the World' most of you have probably heard). Also wanted to mention I bought a copy of Lisa Germano's record 'lullaby for a liquid pig' based on her work with patty and the indigo girls. big disappointment. Are all of her cd's like this one, does anyone know? Sorry I got carried away. I'm just excited people are talking about this perfect record thing. Still consider ID perfect along with 'Blue' and, yes, 'Living with Ghosts', '1, 000 Kisses', 'Flaming Red' (minus 'Big Daddy') are all very close. Roger Yahoo! Hey all, Normally I just enjoy what everyone else writes but this time I must add my two cents. Perfect record lists must include Tracy Chapman's self-titled album (the one with 'Fast Car'). It was and still is very influential and important to the careers of all female singer/songwriter type artists. This is just my humble opinion. Didnt say that it wasnt. My problem isnt with the song itself but with its placement on the album. Coming after The Rowing Song and When it Dont Come Easy just doesnt work for me. I think someone has mentioned this and now I will too. I cant think of a song on any of Pattys studio albums that I consider a stinker. They are all good, great, or timeless. I certainly dont want to give the impression that the songs mentioned are no good. Sometimes it is just a matter of including a song in the wrong place or the wrong album. Florida would be perfect on LwG. Tony would not fit on 1,000 Kisses. Both are great songs.
