Roger, I will sneak out of lurkdom again to try and put it into words. But I want to be careful that I appreciate and respect those who love the CD. It is so easy to take these discussions the wrong way. I will always buy anything that Patty releases even though I might not like ID as much as I like her other recordings. To me, ID is like a jigsaw puzzle with some pieces missing or out of sort. The songs seemed jumbled to me. And I find the schizophrenic battle between survival and despair a bit depressing. Alot of that has to do with the fact that Patty sings much softer on this CD. Contrast with LwG which forced her to stretch vocally. I suppose I miss that. It comes down to my own personal listening preferences...I can listen to LwG over and over and over while ID is nice to listen to every once in a while. But I think it is all subjective - it really depends on what inspires you at any particular moment in time. I am sure to get heat for this but I think Living With Ghosts is Patty's weakest album. 1,000 Kisses is the strongest and most "cohesive", production and songwriting wise. One of the things I love about Patty and her music is the progression. She is becoming a better songwriter as the years go by. Although I will say that Flaming Red has the weakest tracks (specifically the lyrics of One Big Love) of any Patty albums. Even with that track the album is stronger than Living with Ghosts. (BTW Living with Ghosts was the first Patty album I was introduced to.) I loved Impossible Dream the first time I heard it. The only complaint I have with the album is the inclusion of Florida. Good song but interrupts the flow of the album for me. The individual songs are some of Patty's best and I'm surprised no one has said so. Kite, Useless Desire, Top of the World, Rowing Song, When it Don't Come Easy...I could name nearly every song on the album! Still, 1,000 Kisses is the Perfect Patty album. Not a weak spot to be found; incredible songwriting, intimate production, and terrific instrumentation from the players. OK, other perfect albums: Aerosmith: Rocks U2: The Joshua Tree Caedmon's Call: 40 Acres Phil Keaggy: The Wind and the Wheat / Beyond Nature Trashcan Sinatras: Weightlifting Elvis Costello: OH MAN, this is tough but I would say King of America and Armed Forces but This Years Model and Trust would be close too. Wow, This topic generated a lot of discussion. Very interesting indeed that each of Patty's records is SOMEBODY'S favorite on this list. Looks like Living With Ghosts is the end-all fav. Probably because of all of Patty's original classics, which for some reason she tends to ignore now. I will admit that this is the first Patty album that sold me. And I've been buying ever since. It'd be awesome if she did another acoustic record. Can I ask those of you who've said ID was a bit of a disappointment if there's a specific reason why? There may not even be anything easy to put into words that didn't hit it for you, but perhaps there is. Just curious. I will admit it didn't hit me immediately like the other ones did, but this one doesn't have as clear a mood or tone. It's perhaps her first entirely eclectic (don't beat me up for that comment if you disagree) record. For me, all of her other albums tend to have an overriding tone that carries from song to song that makes the album a co! hesive unit. What I like best about this one is that it's all over the place. As far as other recent near (but not) perfect records go, I'm inclined to include several not mentioned thus far: K.D. Lang's Hymns of the 49th Parallel, featuring works by Canadian singer-songwriters is breathtaking (first time I heard her sing Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelulah' I cried--it also features great Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Jane Sibbery and Ron Sexsmith covers). I love Shelby Lynne's 'Identity Crisis', Lucinda Williams 'World Without Tears', Patti Scialfa's '23rd Street Lullaby', Kathleen Edwards 'Failer', Mary Gauthier 'Mercy Now', and list-member's Zachary Scot Johnson 'Moment of Clarity' (which features a 'Top of the World' most of you have probably heard). Also wanted to mention I bought a copy of Lisa Germano's record 'lullaby for a liquid pig' based on her work with patty and the indigo girls. big disappointment. Are all of her cd's like this one, does anyone know? Sorry I got carried away. I'm just excited people are talking about this perfect record thing. Still consider ID perfect along with 'Blue' and, yes, 'Living with Ghosts', '1, 000 Kisses', 'Flaming Red' (minus 'Big Daddy') are all very close. Roger Yahoo! Dennis, Costello seems to be that way. I had a hits collection and then one day I was listening to the song "Man Out of Time" and it all clicked for me. Since then I have gotten everything I can by him. Great songwriter, especially if you like witty and interesting word play. Choir's Wide Eye Wonder is a great album too. I prefer Free Flying Soul myself. The Lost Dogs first one is OOP but I might be able to swing a copy of it.... if you are interested. I had forgotten about Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws and I can't agree with you enough. I don't know why I don't have that on disc. I have the vinyl. Best of Mark Heard was an interesting choice too. Love some of his stuff, especially Dry Bones Dance. Caedmon's Call earlier stuff (anything before In the Company of Angels) is worth looking into.
