Patty's Living With Ghosts is still the showstopper for me. 1000 Kisses, Flaming Red, and Silver Bell rank next to each other for second favorite. Impossible Dream was a bit disappointing for me personally. The perfect record? In the last five years it'd have to be Stevie Nicks' Trouble In Shangri-La, because it flows so beautifully, the lyrics are so personal and yet resonant with me, and there isn't a song on it that I skip past in the CD player. Almost every album in my collection, even the great ones, have a song or two that get the skip button. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 May 2005 17:57:43 +0000 From: "Dennis Flynn" Subject: RE: MM: RE: The perfect record? Wow, Holly, I couldn't agree with you more about your PG ranking. Although, the songs I love on Impossible Dream I absolutely LOVE. Its just that all of the songs don't grab me like LwG. I will check out Trouble in Shangri-La per your recommendation. I used to enjoy Stevie during her Bella Donna days but must admit that I haven't followed her closely since then. When are they ever going to re-release Buckingham Nicks on CD??? >From: "Holly Booms" >Reply-To: >To: >Subject: MM: RE: The perfect record? >Date: Tue, 17 May 2005 11:16:59 -0500 > >Patty's Living With Ghosts is still the showstopper for me. 1000 Kisses, >Flaming Red, and Silver Bell rank next to each other for second favorite. >Impossible Dream was a bit disappointing for me personally. > >The perfect record? Wow, This topic generated a lot of discussion. Very interesting indeed that each of Patty's records is SOMEBODY'S favorite on this list. Looks like Living With Ghosts is the end-all fav. Probably because of all of Patty's original classics, which for some reason she tends to ignore now. I will admit that this is the first Patty album that sold me. And I've been buying ever since. It'd be awesome if she did another acoustic record. Can I ask those of you who've said ID was a bit of a disappointment if there's a specific reason why? There may not even be anything easy to put into words that didn't hit it for you, but perhaps there is. Just curious. I will admit it didn't hit me immediately like the other ones did, but this one doesn't have as clear a mood or tone. It's perhaps her first entirely eclectic (don't beat me up for that comment if you disagree) record. For me, all of her other albums tend to have an overriding tone that carries from song to song that makes the album a cohesive unit. What I like best about this one is that it's all over the place. As far as other recent near (but not) perfect records go, I'm inclined to include several not mentioned thus far: K.D. Lang's Hymns of the 49th Parallel, featuring works by Canadian singer-songwriters is breathtaking (first time I heard her sing Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelulah' I cried--it also features great Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Jane Sibbery and Ron Sexsmith covers). I love Shelby Lynne's 'Identity Crisis', Lucinda Williams 'World Without Tears', Patti Scialfa's '23rd Street Lullaby', Kathleen Edwards 'Failer', Mary Gauthier 'Mercy Now', and list-member's Zachary Scot Johnson 'Moment of Clarity' (which features a 'Top of the World' most of you have probably heard). Also wanted to mention I bought a copy of Lisa Germano's record 'lullaby for a liquid pig' based on her work with patty and the indigo girls. big disappointment. Are all of her cd's like this one, does anyone know? Sorry I got carried away. I'm just excited people are talking about this perfect record thing. Still consider ID perfect along with 'Blue' and, yes, 'Living with Ghosts', '1, 000 Kisses', 'Flaming Red' (minus 'Big Daddy') are all very close. Roger Yahoo! Hello, Patty, where were you? Met her before the show, she was just as listless and friendly as the last time (her dogs were nice though). And NO don't email me about it OR this note. I am DONE. Oh and her sound guy has a nice surprise for him when he gets back to Nashville... Take me OFF this list, don't send me Silver Bell or ANYTHING, I am DONE.. I am sure to get heat for this but I think Living With Ghosts is Patty's weakest album. 1,000 Kisses is the strongest and most "cohesive", production and songwriting wise. One of the things I love about Patty and her music is the progression. She is becoming a better songwriter as the years go by. Although I will say that Flaming Red has the weakest tracks (specifically the lyrics of One Big Love) of any Patty albums. Even with that track the album is stronger than Living with Ghosts. (BTW Living with Ghosts was the first Patty album I was introduced to.) I loved Impossible Dream the first time I heard it. The only complaint I have with the album is the inclusion of Florida. Good song but interrupts the flow of the album for me. The individual songs are some of Patty's best and I'm surprised no one has said so. Kite, Useless Desire, Top of the World, Rowing Song, When it Don't Come Easy...I could name nearly every song on the album! Still, 1,000 Kisses is the Perfect Patty album. Not a weak spot to be found; incredible songwriting, intimate production, and terrific instrumentation from the players. OK, other perfect albums: Aerosmith: Rocks U2: The Joshua Tree Caedmon's Call: 40 Acres Phil Keaggy: The Wind and the Wheat / Beyond Nature Trashcan Sinatras: Weightlifting Elvis Costello: OH MAN, this is tough but I would say King of America and Armed Forces but This Years Model and Trust would be close too. Sundays: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic Lost Dogs: Gift Horse Sam Phillips: Cruel Inventions (possibly A Boot and A Shoe - time will tell) Jeremy - -----Original Message----- From: owner-mad-mission@smoe.org [mailto:owner-mad-mission@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Roger Thornton Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2005 3:37 PM To: Mad-Mission@smoe.org Subject: RE: MM: RE: The perfect record?
