I can't cover every detail , & often pass over things I've said before , such as noting Patty's dancing. Different things are important to different people , & whoever makes comments about the show is representing those with similar priorities. For instance , Patty had red glitter on her shoe buckles in Atlanta. Not high on my list of priorities , so I didn't mention it , but I'll bet a number of folks are delighted by the detail. I skip a lot of detail for the sake of brevity , but usually think that brevity sucks when writing reviews , especially after reading long , detailed , better ones from others. I understand that , to some degree , singing along is a tribute to Patty's power in pulling people out of themselves , into a larger sense of the world. But hopefully , along with that sense , comes respect for others , who did pay and/or travel a long way to see & HEAR Patty Griffin. Patty's music & sensibilities certainly couldn't affirm those who think that enjoying only themselves trumps all other priorities. Someone else mentioned the way JD ( bass ) moves around a lot , & generally delights in his playing , calling it a distraction. I just wrote it off , b/c it didn't distract me. When you said the bass , I was wondering if you meant his singing or playing , b/c I've noticed JD singing more , & injecting bass lines where they weren't before. Also a lot of grunting , yelling & stomping. Not sure how much of it is ad-lib , but if I were a dictatorial stage manger , I would be wondering if I was going to have to deal with a " loose cannon " situation. It would certainly be difficult b/c JD is so happy on stage. Most of it was either good or indifferent , but a few times , I did find it distracting. Also looking for someone to 'fess up. Got behind a black SUV while looking for parking , with white writing all over it. " Mad-mission " , " Ryman or Bust " , " I love Patty Griffin " & more. Cost me sitting thru another light when they dropped someone off at the corner. Since it was Patty fans , it didn't bother me a whit. Was hoping for a good spot to stop & talk , but got distracted & lost them. WHO WAS IT !!! Two corrections for the Atlanta show. Someone informed me that the spill incident was at the start of the show. Only other thing I recalled was that Patty wasn't on stage at the time , so I assumed that it was during the encore applause. I stand corrected. Also omitted " Silver Bell " from the set list. Don't recall exactly where it was. Didn't decide to head for Austin until the very last minute. From the beginning , I wondered about adding 4-5 days & 2000 miles to the trip for one show , even if it was the last show of the tour. Decided to go , & not to go at least twice each during the trip : ) Morning after the Atlanta show , my chest was hurting , & was so sore in one spot , I couldn't lay on it. Thought it was a combination of smoking , drinking , stress & not enough sleep , presaging serious probs. After awhile , I realized that the symptons were mimicing bruised ribs , that I had once , but had no clue as to how it might have happened. Planned on deciding last night at midnight , which was the time planned , if I were going to continue. Even after spending most of the day in bed , I felt even worse then , with a constricting heaviness added to the rest. Took the one tranquilizer I brought along & went off to bed. When I got up today , & hit the cool , sunshiny Nashville day , I was feelin' goood ! Just the one sore spot left , that seems to be improving , so I'm going to indulge myself at a Ruth's Chris that I recently passed & head out. If things begin to worsen again , I'll be slowly heading home , tho. Caught up recently in some great mandolin ( I think ) music on Elton's " Holiday Inn " , & since I know everything about everything , I'm pronouncing Doug's mandolin under-utilized , as was Brian's cello , Michael's trumpet , & lisa's violin : ) Later. Theres a joke and I know it very well Its one of those that I told you long ago Take my word Im a madman dont you know The grounds a long way down but I need more Bernie Taupin " Madman Across the Water " Music & performance by Elton John ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V9 #101 *********************************
