Got back & saw a Waffle House nearby. Hadn't had bacon & eggs in weeks : ) Short on sleep already , & knew my meal & coffee was going to keep me awake for awhile , but did it anyway. Not very bright. 3-4 hours sleep before the 380 mile drive to Atlanta. Got pretty sleepy a few times , but was wired by the time I met Elise up the street from the theater. Back in the day , I would have stayed wired the rest of the night , but alas , " the day " is past. Pam was with Elise when I arrived , & the famous & controversial Matt Morrow joined us later , along with Shannon. Haven't heard Matt's music , but if he doesn't make it there , he could try stand-up. Regaled us with a few funny stories , with great deadpan delivery , & pinpoint timing. Never brought M & M's to a show , but if I had seen the ones Pam brought , I would have had to. The " Darth " mix , that says " go to the dark side , choose dark chocolate ". We all gathered at center stage , joined a little later by Crystal & Patty who I met in NC. Well into the 90's when I arrived in Hot ' lanta. Set list. J'irai la Vior un Jour / piano / solo Wade in the Water No Bad News When it Don't Come Easy Useless Desires The Long Ride Peaceful Valley / solo * Free / solo Up or Down / piano The Kite Song / piano Love Throw a Line Standing Rain Chief Tony Making Pies Encore Tears of A Clown Getting Ready Icicles * MLK inspired song. Not named yet , but I'll go with this until it is. As I said , " the day " is past. Somewhere near mid-show it all caught up to me. Legs were tired from all of the recent standing , feet were sore from wearing the FR's for 2 days , & I was mentally semi-numb. Trips definitely lift my vitality , but also increase my smoking & drinking , & decrease my sleep time. Catches up to me more often as Time Marches On. Liked just listening , tho. Very spotty memory of the songs , but generally thought the guitar volume was too loud compared to Patty's voice again. Could barely hear her on " Tears " & GR sometimes. The music in " Tony " perked me up a little. I'm usually paranoid about putting things on the stage , but there were no recesses , & there were drinks & other things all along the edge , so I felt safe. WRONG ! . Someone stepped up during the encore , & threw some flowers & a CD on the stage w/o looking , & spilled my Coke. I moved the flowers & CD out of the liquid , & figured the Coke was harmless b/c it was between Patty's monitors & the edge of the stage. Wrong again ! Patty asked someone to bring a towel out b/c there were cables in the area , & she didn't want anyone getting zapped , which would have made my wired comment prophetic. So someone threw a towel , & I wiped it up. Just one more in a long line of negative personal contacts with Patty : ( , but as long as I'm not declared " persona non grata " , I'm fine : ) " Tears " & GR perked me up a little more , but not much. Disturbing sing-a-long trend continues. Funny , she doesn't LOOK like Jimmy Buffet. Patty mentioned Hot 'lanta twice , & the second time said she did it b/c she just likes saying it. Ashley introduced herself , & asked for a shout-out to Aubrey & someone else in Nashville , but I guess I got distracted & didn't write down the 2nd name. No way my memory is going to deliver it. Sorry Ashley ! Hi Aubrey ! No chance of me stringing any coherent sentences together when I'm that tired , so it was straight to hotel & bed. Always liked Elise's online persona , & didn't talk to her much when we last met in Boston , but my suspicions were confirmed that she was great company at a Patty meet. Besides , she's a fellow obsesso fan , who was waiting for Patty to come out before starting her 5 hour drive when I left. " Equality " , I spoke the word As if a wedding vow Ah , but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now Bob Dylan " My Back Pages " Don ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 May 2005 05:11:06 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: Ryman Theater - Nashville Got a good nights sleep , but still felt washed-out. A much shorter drive & reserved seating makes for a less hurried & stressful day + an unanticipated bonus - new time zone = 1 extra hour. First 100 miles went by in a blink , accompanied by Elton John's great early work. Things slowed down from there , with driving rain , rain stopping during a 30-40 minute back-up , then starting again , as soon as traffic began moving. As it stopped 20 miles out of Nashville , Dylan's " Hard Rain " came on. Thought I got lucky in 'lanta with the only Kinko's listed being a block away , but it was double the rate of the standard , prob b/c it was in the Hilton. Found another across the street in another elite hotel. Same deal. OK , found one in Nashville a few blocks from the Ryman. They were closing as I walked in , so I had 2 1/2 hours to kill. Had a good meal at Joe's Crab Shack , & talked to a semi-crazed biker who had just driven thru the same hard rain. He tried to bail on the check , but the waitress got as suspicious as I did when he took everything but his beer , & caught him in the lot : ) Walked up & down the main drag a few times , & the best thing I heard was a guy playing in a deli type place with all of 5-10 mostly disinterested people. Got him to play some of his own compositions , ( good ) & talked for awhile. Have to 'fess up to Michael that I missed his entire set this time. Sorry Michael ! Patty timing was perfect , tho. I sat down , Patty came on. Set list : J'irai la Voir un Jour / piano / solo No Bad News When it Don't Come Easy Useless Desires The Long Ride Crying Over / solo * Free / solo Up or Down / piano The Kite Song / piano Silver Bell Love Throw a Line Standing Rain Chief Top of the World Making Pies Encore Tears of a Clown Getting Ready Icicles Falling * working title First the good news ; " J'irai " was top of the scale , & NBN rocked out. I expected Patty & the band to be up for the Ryman , & they sure seemed to be on NBN. The Ryman seemed to be sold out from what I could see , & they responded loudly. Patty's vocals were as good as they get. I expected the crowd in the historic Ryman to listen more respectfully than most. The bad news ; sing-along trend is growing. DCE , UD & LR were all victims. One near me seemed to especially like the strong notes : ( Worse news ; there was actually a chorus starting to do TOTW. Good news again , a chorus of shushes shut them down. Hmmmmm.... Patty Griffin / Jimmy Buffet , who should I go see next ? ICO was outstanding , & thankfully , they didn't know the words. I was listening to " Up or Down " , realizing it's far from my favorite , & wondered what I would think if it was the only Patty song I ever heard. My guess ; " what a great song ! , & Who IS that woman !! ". Love Patty's great range - from the delicacy of " J'irai " & " Kite " , to the blasting out of NBN & GR. Patty invited Buddy Miller in on LTAL. Some of the crowd invited themselves in. He stayed for more than one song , left & came back. I didn't keep track. Expected to see Emmylou or Julie , but Buddy was it. They played quite a bit past Patty's usual scat on the song , prob to highlight Buddy. I liked it . Crowd loved it. I think " Standing " gets a big response from every crowd. Drums at the end of TOTW seem to keep getting louder & more constant , & obscured Doug's solo on this occasion. The curtain call was raucous , & the stomping started almost immediately. Patty came out quickly & said she thought there was a stampede , with that giddy delight she shows when the response goes beyond her expectations. 1st two encore songs had the place rocking again , then the winding down of " Icicles " , but I think something's wrong. Don't recall any singing along with it here or anywhere. I'm sure they know the words. Music & lights came up right away , & nipped any demand for a 2nd encore in the bud. 4:05 AM - Good night. I discovered Patty after she was included in a list in Twangin' magazine online, and this was the first record of hers I purchased. I discovered Patty about the same time that I dscovered Toni Price, Laura Cantrell, Kelly Willis and Kim Richey, and I think they are all spendid. I love all of Patty's records -- released or unreleased -- but I wish she'd rock out more often. - -- SteveB ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 May 2005 14:41:25 -0400 From: Subject: Re: MM: Ryman Theater - Nashville I was at the ryman show and thought it was as amazing as last time. Feel like Patty really enjoys the theatre as well as the crowd response. she also played wade in the water, which was my first chance to hear it and or course I loved it. also first chance to hear silver bell and now fully appreciate all the commentary on this song and album. anyone who has a copy of siver bell (album) and would copy it for me would be greatly appreciated. love the ryman, love patty so it was a great night for me. i saw her here for 1000 kisses and was really hoping emmylow would show again. patty joined michael for his last song and she was just adorable dancing with the group. realize i'm not as good a reviewer as don, but wanted to give my take on the show. Patty was amazing as always, i love icicles, as i'm sure the crowd does to, maybe no singing causes it's such a delicate/vulnerable sounding song. totw has that quality for me too and i felt like the singing came on toward the ! end, but as a person who feels compelled to sing as well, i think the emotion of the songs and pattys ability to pull you in brings that out in all of us. it is difficult to control. i felt totw had the same beginning where you can't breathe enough to sing when she starts, but she has totally pulled you and by the close and it's difficult not to at that point. just my opinion. really a fabulous show. my only critique, was i felt the bass infringed on patty's vocals atime or two. thanks for listening. lucrecia > > From: "Donald Henn" > Date: 2005/05/15 Sun AM 05:11:06 EDT > To: mad-mission@smoe.org > Subject: MM: Ryman Theater - Nashville > > Got a good nights sleep , but still felt washed-out.
