I've converted various people and they have converted people, so it's like a nice long chain. Firstly, I heard about her from a Dixie Chicks interview, and I have already thanked them in person, lol. On this mailing list however there were three key people who I owe eternal thanks: Mike, for running the list and sending me Living With Ghosts when I couldn't buy it over here Dave for burning me a live concert because he said I needed to hear Patty live Don, for sending me a wonderful Patty video, just because! Patty fans truly are the nicest people! There is of course also Adam, who I met at a Patty concert and who let me take the set list, although I'm not sure he is still on the list. So thanks guys! So, Im drinking at this local bar last night, right? (new for me because I'm new to this neighborhood). I find out its a college hang out after 10pm because of their specials on Wednesday. Im like, cool. Drink specials rule! Okay, so the place gets packed by 11pm and Im making small talk with some people and listening to small talk of others nearby. The usual. Then this couple orders drinks next to me and the guy orders a Guinness beer. A Guinness Beer. Well, okay. Im well versed in the subject and know that the call it beer debate is pretty moot. Bite the tongue and we're still smooth sailing. And his date gets a Bud Light. everything's cool. She then asks him about this Guinness drink he ordered. Hes like: Yeah, its a draft beer. Theres actually two kinds. Guinness beer that comes on tap and then theres Extra Stout. Those usually come in bottles. Well, thats sort of true, no mention that the Extra Stout has like twice the alcohol so thats why you get hammered so much faster, but Im feeling generous tonight. No drunken ranting to strangers looking for a good time. Friendly place, you know. Ill let the whole thing slide. By the time he was done with this exercise in BS-to-impress, the Bud Light had already been gotten. So then she asks if the bartender forgot about the other beer. And hes like (Im not making this up): Yeah, its a dark beer so it takes longer to pour. Mustcontrolfists...ofdeath. Take a breath. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. Suck it in, blow it out. Whew. I look over and shes buying what this guy is saying. This is a pretty good bar by the way. Its got Guinness, Bass, and Yuengling on draft. Its got the Glenfiddich, the Glenlivet, and Macallan all up there on display for those cold Colorado nights there, M-meister. Sorry, Dave, didnt see any Canadian beer on tap, but they might have bottles. And Wednesday night is mug night where you pay $1 drafts ($2 for imported drafts) with their official mug you buy. Ill be frequenting this place, bet your bottom dollar, Annie. Okay so then he gets the Guinness and he does two no-nos right off the bat. Anyone? Anyone? You over there. The one in Chicago, you just raised your hand. What? Please repeat it for the class. Exactly. Exactly. 1) He drinks it while its still forming. 2) He sips it. Exactly. What was your name? Alex? Cool, you get a gold star and four holy cards. At this point I totally lost interest in whatever he had to say about Guinness Stout. I felt my shoulders to see which one was colder, and made sure they got it. Then continued the small talk on the other side of me. I decided I would only speak to them in tongues if they had to ask me anything. Examples: They: Im sorry for bumping you Me: "gah gah bahwawawablbblblblbayagaahhhhhhhbdbddbdgd!" They: whats the score of the St. Louis game? Me: (see above response) They: hey buddy get your head off the bar before someone throws you out. Me: (if not passed out, see above response) Moral of the story? You don't have to know everything about Guinness to drink it (you don't have to know anything and still enjoy that beautiful nectar), but then don't go BSing your date like you do. Save that stuff for the toilet, man. I don't need it sitting next to me at the bar. Kim ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 May 2005 00:54:30 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: Cat's Cradle - Carrboro , NC I think I discovered one of the reasons that Patty had a small crowd last night. Sarah McLachlan was in town. Big name , & one of the best S/S's today. Would like to see her myself , partially due to her CD music , but mainly b/c I saw a live video of her doing " Angel " somewhere. Right up there with Patty's best. Of course , even tho I've never seen Sarah , & seen Patty scores of times , if they conflicted , the choice is still clear : ) Beautiful day , & great 100 mile trip on sparsely traveled rte 58 , coming out of Norfolk. I was able to focus on the music & the birds. Polar opposite of a few hours later when I got directionally challenged in a hard rain on the way to the venue. Met Elise & friend in line , & chatted with her & other fans during the wait. She'll be in Atlanta tomorrow. There was a guy in line with a sign that said it was his birthday , & he needed a ticket. Took him awhile , but he scored , & got a round of applause when he did. Got my position between center stage & piano , & was approached by fellow obsesso fan Crystal & friend Patty, who heard us talking about my Patty touring. They will be in Atlanta tomorrow , too. Was presented with a " That's Dancing ! " button by JD & Michael for my half-dancing while I was the only one at the stage during the opening set in Norfolk. Almost felt like his opener when I was there by myself before the show , singing & moving along with the Janis Joplin music. Set list: J'irai la Voir un Jour / piano / solo Wade in the Water No Bad News When it Don't Come Easy Useless Desires The Long Ride I'm Crying Over / solo Free / solo The Kite Song / piano Up or Down / piano Silver Bell Love Throw a Line Standing Rain Chief Tony Making Pies Encore Tears of a Clown Getting Ready Icicles Falling Crowd was loud from the beginning , a good sign b/c it usually lifts Patty a notch or 2. Maybe three this time. They applauded mid-song many times , & often carried into the next one. I think it helped when Patty told them she asked for Cat's Cradle this trip. Seems some of the loudest crowds are the quietest when Patty slows it down. Here & Webster Hall. I did think I heard a little singing a few times , but Patty's voice was loud in the speakers , to the extent that it seemed on the edge of distortion. I think it did distort momentarily a few times. I was right in front of a monitor that her voice was coming out of , & just leaned into it when I heard any distractions. Big applause when Patty went into " Rain " , but she was apparently concentrating hard on her playing , & her volume started to fade while she bent her head a little closer to the guitar w/o realizing it. She recovered quickly , tho , breaking a few big smiles. Then the chorus started. Quite a few in the crowd spontaneously started singing along. There were no loud or distracting voices near me , & it sounded OK. Huge applause mid-song & after " Rain " , again during mid-song in " Chief " , & after. Then " Tony " had them trying to outdo themselves. Patty was delighted. More singing for " Tony " & MP , but not distracting b/c it was a crowd sound , I guess , rather than one or two voices sticking out. Big applause for the encore & after " Tears " & GR. I think it was then that Patty said they were making it all wothwhile , making up for all the CRAP she's ever taken. Then she said they were great singers , & someone in the crowd popped up with " you're good too ". Big laugh. Previously missed reporting in Ellsworth , that at the same point ( after GR ) Patty said " Wow ! , you make me feel like Foghat at Bangor Auditorium " I was sure they were going to drag her back for the 2nd encore , but they quieted quickly when the music came up. With the long drive to Atlanta coming up , a 2nd encore prob wasn't in the cards anyway. Misquoted this line last time , " That's it ! hehe " In the battle of time In the battle of will It's only your hope And your heart That gets killed Patty Griffin " Sweet Lorraine " Don ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V9 #97 ********************************
