Holy crap! Four times, huh? But your candid responses bring out some lively emotions, unique to the group. It's like religion. You need the evil or else the good isn't as good. It would be a shame to not see you making fun of something. And I have to say that if it weren't for your posts, I would never know at least two things (off the top of my head) so lest not ye groupeth forgetteth: 1. "World Cafe" is a most excellent radio show, and it sounds like the whole station is, although I've only got it on-line a few times. Here in Tampa there's 88.5 which may be copied from the success of community radio in Phily. Much better than the NPR station in Pensa-backwoods Florida that only played classical, classical, jazz, and more classical (plus other stuff like World Cafe and Car Talk and stuff). Hey, not that there's anything wrong with classical and jazz (I love almost all kinds of music depending on my mood and I listened to the station 80% of the time and gave money and blah blah blah), but at 3am on a Sunday after the bars let out, it's real cool to turn on a community radio station playing commerical free electronica than "Classics All Night" with Bertrum Quelude seven nights a week. 2. I now know what LMFAO means. Nuff said. 3. You know venues that play the good music in Phily. Okay, so that's a third thing. There are at least three things I've learned. Those three. Whatever. It's like 4am. I'm doing this dial-up thing until the Verizon monopoly gets around to transferring my DSL over here. I love their time frames, especially when they estimate in days rather than hours. They like that kind of thing. Especially when you have a business to run that depends on high speed. Busting my balls here. Bustin my balls. And what's with everyone going to this Boston concert on Friday and no one saying anything about it??? I guess I was wrong and there wasn't a PG concert in Boston. It must have been cancelled or I got the dates wrong on the venue Website. Sorry about that. I'll try harder to get the dates right next time. For some reason I could have sworn it was last Friday. Oh well. Perhaps, morning coctails are in order. And I can't believe the text was missing from the Boston show, damn cyberspace! You are gold Don, I have never met such a generous person, anytime you need peanuts I will feed them to you, opps, I mean I will hand them to you! Peace, Karla ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 May 2005 00:41:38 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: The Norva - Norfolk , Va Liked Janis so much last night , I listened to her all the way in from D.C. No prob finding the hotel , but got lost on the way to the venue , w/o ever making a turn. Asked directions to town , & winged it from there , with the help of a map. Looked for a place to eat , drink , & smoke before I got in line. Made a lucky choice , & strolled into Kelly's Backtage Tavern. Discovered that if ate there , I would go in early , the back way. Life is good ! Heard " I Wanna go to the Sun " from Frampton Comes Alive " , soon after , & it never sounded so sweet. Went in , & took my spot between piano & center stage. It finally dawned on me after how many shows ? Duh ! No hurry , tho. I remained the only one against the stage until Michael's set was over. Hmmmm. The music before Michael started his set was the almost the same Janis set I listened to in the car. One exception was the live " Ball & Chain " where she did a lot of painful dialogue. It made me think that the price she paid for being the grittiest female rocker ever was a terrible hunger & desperation. Probably not worth it. Set list; J'irai la Voir un jour / piano / solo Wade in the Water No Bad News When it Don't Come Easy Useless Desires The Long Ride Free / solo I'm Crying Over / solo Up or Down / piano The Kite Song / piano Silver Bell Love Throw a Line Standing Tony Making Pies Encore Tears of a Clown Getting Ready Icicles Falling I was in front of JD , near his monitor , but it didn't distract me much , b/c the bass line isn't as loud as the guitar. Patty knocked out the frst 3 , with WITW even better than usual. Things deteriorated during DCE. First , loud static & popping , then Patty broke a string. At one point , Patty looked like she was thinking of stopping , but got back in & I have to say that her vocals didn't suffer. Had great sound on her vocals throughout. Another deterioration during DCE , is that it was the first one my local singer(s) knew the words to. Lot of chatting too. During " Kite " there were no quet moments. Talking & laughing filled in the spaces. UD & LR & " Tony "were sing-a-longs. I started singing too , hoping my terrible voice would dissuade them , but it seemed to encourage instead. Liked " Free " a little more when it wasn't preceded by IF or ICO. ICO was a highlight , but near the end , my closest chorus member was humming to it. How in the world is someone inspired to hum with a powerful , plaintive ballad ???? That they don't even know ? SB was hot , & got a big reaction. " Standing " didn't seem to be up to Patty's normal standard for me , but got a big reaction too. The only good thing I have to say about the small Norfolk crowd is their loud reactions near the end & for the encore. Ah ! , and they were pretty good for Michael , too. They faded quickly after the first encore when the music came up. Don't know if they were quiet during IF , or if I was just better focused , but it remains a nightly highlight for me. Had some drum probs during " Tears " , & it didn't rock out as much as usual. Patty cleared up some confusion for me when someone said they saw her walking the dog & asked the name. she said she had more than one , but that the weiner dog was Bean. She said she changed his name from Lalu , b/c you can't call an " evil demon " Lalu : ) I thought I recalled the name Lalu from awhile ago. Didn't even know the directions back from town , & had to get directions from town to here. Wish me luck getting back to the hotel before check-out time : ) Music is my food in life Don't take it away Peter Frampton " I Wanna' Go to the Sun " Don ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V9 #96 ********************************
