Long drive to Ellsworth , but was rested , & enjoyed the music during the trip. Don't usually listen to Patty much on trips b/c I don't want to wear out her music for the live shows. Silly me ! Patty has such a huge body of great work , that I could listen for hours w/o hearing the same song twice. Hearing " The Rowing Song " on a Chicago jukebox , & PMH at The Egg promted me to put ID , LWG , & a mix into my CD player. Missed FR in m,y CD case , but it's in there now. Great hearing LWG , " Cain " , " Nebraska " , " Night " & many others for the first time in a long time. Saw a rainbow when I was well into Maine. Was sure that patty was at the end of it , a clear sign that her music was sent by Providence to help usher us into a new era of understanding , but it disappeared after 20-30 miles , far from Old Town & Ellsworth. I recovered from my disappointment in time for the show next day , tho : ) Knew I was entering the Wild North Country when I saw caution signs with moose on them. At the first rest stop in Maine , I saw maps documenting animal / vehicle collisions on Maine highways. Didn't notice the deer figure , but there were over 200 moose / vehicle collisions 1999-2001. Didn't know my seat assignment until I got there , & was surprised to find myself halfway back on an aisle. Patty's must have had a bigshowing from hometown family & friends. Small venue , so I was only about 9 rows back. Still a fine seat. Set list : J'irai la Voir un Jour / piano / solo Wade in the Water No Bad News When it Don't Come Easy Useless Desires The Long Ride Mary / solo I'm Crying Over / solo The Kite Song / piano Up or Down / piano Silver Bell Love Throw a Line Standing Making Pies Encore Tears of a Clown Getting Ready Icicles Falling " J'iari " started the set off right for me , followed up by a strong WITW. NBN was back to full band , & I swear I got a possible whiff of that elusive hit single that could launch Patty into the jetstream. Once she gets the attention that a hit single brings , the sky's the limit as the music public discovers her huge repertoire of great music. Of course , a Grammy win might help , too. It seemed that Patty's mid-range were stronger tonite , & her slight tremelo was a little more pronounced. She said later that she was especially scared & nervous about this show , which might account for that. Of course , her soft vocal touch was exceptional also , especailly on " J'irai " & " Mary ". She dedicated " Mary " to her many aunts in the audience , who were all like mother's to her at one time or another , & of course , to her mother who she said was out there. In honor of Mother's Day. The solo " Mary " was one of the better versions I've heard. Delicate & heartfelt. I think doing it solo helped , as she her timing wasn't constrained by the msuical timing of the band. " I'm Crying Over " was great as usual , & I was so drawn into " Kite " the ending surprised me again. " Standing " seems to be free form every night , with another great performance this night. Patty finally got her wish during the encore when she invited all to dance if they wanted. 10 - 20 people took her up on it , & were dancing naer the stage. Patty was clearly delighted with it & celebrated with her own dancing & just a little wailing scat at the end of " Tears ". More dancing thru GR , & I expected the dancers to stay near the stage when Patty went into " Icicles " , & I planned on joining them , but most went & sat back down. Patty talked about how nice it was to come back home in the spring , that she always got excited about the season when she was young , but then winter came back , & she annouced that " winter sucks ". She also talked about how her mother , her grandmother Mary , & her grandmother Imelda all sang " J'irai " around the house , & that's where she picked it up. Imelda ? Ah , the genesis of Patty's shoe thing is revealed : ) The small crowd was very responsive. I would guess around 300. they were still selling tix when I got there , but it looked sold out when I looked around later. Patty got an extra wave of applause after " Standing " , & a big standing ' O ' for the encore. The lights came up quickly after the encore , & the applause died down rapidly. Hope I didn't screw this up too much , constrained by the public library's time limits of 1 hour. Ususally takes me about 2. No Kinko's or internet cafes in Ellsworth. but at least it's free. Big thanks to the ladies at the Ellsworth public library. A line from Sweet Baby's Jame's all time classic. So that they would know who each other were. They brought bags of M&M's to the show. Pretty soon everyone was doing it and dropping a couple of bags off on the stage for patty and the Band - -------------- Original message -------------- > I am an old Patty fan but new to the list can someone please explain the M&M > tradition. > > Thanks > > Dionisia ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 May 2005 15:38:53 -0400 From: lindee37@webtv.net (Lindee) Subject: MM: Northampton Woohoo! I'm so psyched for tonight! The orchestra sure isn't sold out, but I'm glad they didn't cancel the show. I am sitting in row A...seats 108-111 I think. I haven't seen Patty since the fall of 2003, so I am really psyched. This will be my third Patty concert. Does anyone know if the song is based on a true story? Did Patty actually know or know of the two kids that drowned? I've heard all the urban legend about Phil Collins' song, "In The Air Tonight," about a friend who drowned without being saved, but I wondered if there might be some truth to Patty's song. It's so moving. I'd love to get some feedback from the other Patty fans out there. Thanks!!
