Sarah Martin, Gillian Reynolds, my wife Justine and I had the honor to be there as representatives of Patty and her fans. We were also there to present the VVAF with the check from the Birthday Fund Drive. Senator Bob Kerrey was there and spoke of his involvement with the VVAF and their work. Long time president of the VVAF Bobby Muller and current president Bill Billings also made comments about the work of the VVAF, stories of the horrors of war and what the VVAF does to help to ease the pain and suffering of the people around the world. Then it was our turn, my comments "Thank you, good evening and Happy 25th Anniversary to the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. It is both an honor and a privilege to be here tonight representing Patty, who is on tour in Michigan and could not make it but sends her warm wishes to you, and also as representatives of all her fans from all over the world. We are fans of music, be it the music from just down the street on Broadway, to the soundtrack of a movie. We are fans of the music coming from the coffee houses, bars, garages and the symphony halls across this great land. We are fans of the music of the artist who have made your organization a priority in their lives, Nanci Griffith, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris. But most of all, we are fans of the words, music and the fantastic voice of Patty Griffin. We are members of her fan clubs, Mad-mission, Time Does the Talking and Pattynet. It was through my association with the fanclubs that I was able to live a fans ultimate dream, to be able to sit down and interview one of my music hero's. It was during this time that I learned of Patty's love for the VVAF and the Campaign for a Landmine Free World. A few months latter, one of our members Holly Boom called to remind me that Patty's birthday was soon and that it would be nice if the fanclub would do something to help celebrate Patty's birthday in a memorable way. We kick around a few ideas and then came up with the idea of asking Patty's fans to make a donation in her name to a worthy cause. Holly asked if I knew a cause that Patty really believed in. Well the choice was simple, it would be the VVAF. So that's how we got started. We have just completed the 3rd Patty Griffin Birthday Fund Drive. Along with my wife Justine and my friends Sarah Martin and Gillian Reynolds, it is with great pride that we present to the VVAF's "Campaign for a Landmine Free World" our check in the amount of $6,276.66. This now give us a 3 year total to $15,003.41. Again, thank you and happy Anniversary." We had a great time Murph ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2005 15:28:39 EDT From: MikeBrns4U@aol.com Subject: MM: Save BIG $ on BIG love Patty ticket to Boston 5/6 Dear Mad Hatters, Copy and paste link below. Last year, she released the Grammy-nominated "Impossible Dream," another intimate record filled with the kind of contemporary folk sound and intricate storytelling that has made her a hit with the WYEP crowd. The station, along with the Three Rivers Arts Festival and The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, brings her to Dowe's on Ninth at 8 p.m. Sorry to say, if you don't have tickets, the show is sold out. From Pittsburgh Tribune Review, 4/28/05: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/search/s_327824.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Apr 2005 01:01:05 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor Checked the local paper for a Patty piece , & no luck , but her show announcement gave as good a description of her style as I have heard ; " Lyrical , bluesy folk rock from guitar-slinging singer-songwriter Griffin. " I liked the lyrical part , as it's a big part of her attraction. Bluesy definitely outranks folk & rock in her repertoire , & the guitar-slinging was a nice touch. Met my " Angel of Mercy " Pam at the show , who took off her own jacket in a cold wind , & insisted I wear it while waiting in line b/c I was shivering , at a previous A2 ( Ann Arbor ) show. Decided to move from row j center to an open seat next to her in row p left. Went back to get my soda ( pop in Pgh & A2 ) , & ran into Gene Wendland , wife Debbie , & Kate Peterson who maintains the tabs archives , & helped Jen get TDtT off the ground. Moved back to my own seat after a tall , head-mover sat in front of me during the show. We weren't going to talk during Patty anyway. Set list: French song / solo / piano Wade in the Water No Bad News When it Don't Come Easy Useless Desires Love Throw a Line Light it Up ? / solo Free / solo Up or Down / piano The Kite Song / piano Silver Bell Tony Making Pies The Long Ride Standing Encore Tears of a Clown Getting Ready Icicles Falling 2nd Encore Up to the Mountain ? ( MLK song ) solo Don't recall much about the French song , except that I've heard it before in concert , & don't have the resources to find it quickly when I'm not on my own computer. I'm sure someone out there will come up with it shortly. It's not Pa Janvier. Definitely a highlight with Patty's whispery French phrasings doing it for me. " Wade in the Water " kept the level high , & Patty did some very fluid dancing during the musical interlude. Noticed that after Patty sings " God's gonna' trouble the water " , she follows with " He's gonna' trouble the water , SHE'S gonna' trouble the water ". Don't know if that's the original lyric , but it works for me : ) Still liking NBN a lot. DCE , UD & LTAL were fine , but I think I might have put my finger on a few reasons why I don't perceive them as reaching the same level as the ID tour. The music was more consistent during the ID tour , & I recall it as being more rhythmic , especially on LTAL. The more you like a song , the harder it is to get used to differences in it. Took me a long time to like the live " Standing " b/c I liked the studio version so much. Also , I think that the more involved in a song Patty is , the better the version. With a few exceptions , Patty is generally more involved in the new music , which is why I think a few of the new ones are standing out for me. " Light it Up " is one of them. Liked " Free " a little better , but still doesn't reach the high standard I have for Patty songs. Same for " Up or Down " , which is , in fact , a Patty song. She said a big-mouthed bartender near Wall Street channeled it for her. " Kite " picked things up , as usual , & SB seemed different from earlier versions , with nice interplay between guitar & bass in parts. Patty was swinging , & occasionally thrusting her hips while she danced to the music. That was when I noticed her slit skirt , & knee-high hose. Stop distracting me Patty ! The music ! The music ! " Tony " & MP were fine , but didn't pull me in much. Patty started LR , but seemed to lose her way or flub a guitar line , & began again , playfully blaming it on the audience being too far away. " Standing " seems to be morphing again. Couldn't write it down until Patty started singing the words. Only heard one familiar note until then. Vocals were different too. Recall hearing her sing the word " blind " , usually a short note , but she strung it waay out in low voice. It struck me blind : ) Another highlight. I think Patty got all the words to " Tears " this time , but it was more fun when she was blowing lines. GR didn't seem as upbeat as usual for some reason , but still good. " Icicles " another highlight , & a song that Patty seems to be on top of every time. MLK song seems to grow slightly each time. Patty raised , & then dashed my hopes on that. She did a long intro , telling how she read his last speech from Memphis , & a light went on for her. She was impressed with who he was , his ideas & his courage , & was inspired to write the song. Then she says , " it's called , uh .... , I don't know what it's called " - didn't name it yet. Pam , Gene , Debbie & I happy-chatted about Patty for 15-20 min after the show. I would describe Debbie as a new-age therapist , & I tried to talk her into writing a piece about how she uses Patty's music in her healing therapy & have Gene post it. Always believed that music was theraputic for the ill & the well , & imagine that Patty's is even moreso. I was still in such a good mood when I got here , that I had to restrain myself from singing along with the music in Kinko's. The students must be working on their finals. Real retro stuff , some from the late '50s & '60s. When I was in Chicago someone had a boombox almost blaring rap music. When asked to turn it down , his response was " sorry man, got to do my ghetto thing " . He did turn it down after a few min. I didn't notice why. The volume didn't bother me , but I swear I heard the line " In Chicago " a few hundred times. Seemed to go on for 10-15 min until he finally left. Back home for a day & 1/2 , then off to Albany.
