I was wondering if anyone out there happens to have two extra tickets to the show tonight at the Park West? I just found out about the concert yesterday, and it is sold out. We have never seen Patty in concert, and just love her music. We also love the Park West, and have seen many performances there. Excellent venue. Please email and let me know. Thanks! Stacy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Apr 2005 13:22:30 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: The Barrymore - Madison , WI Had one of those high-stress days , when time is short , & most things seem to go wrong. My heavy jacket was one of those inevitably forgoten details when I left. Spent an extra 1/2 hour going to the motel to put a short sleeve shirt under my long one , & another 1/2 hour looking for a turn I missed. The wait in line was bearable since it was only 40 min. Needed the extra shirt inside too , as they seemed to be counting on all those warm bodies for heat. With the weather for Chicago being cold & windy today , & snow in Detroit , looks like I'll be shopping for cold weather gear again. So , I was standing in line with the " I'm getting too old for this " blues , but things worked out , & I got the exact same seat I had at the Pageant , center aisle right , 2nd row. Great view , & able to lean into the aisle for more light while writing , er , scribbling , notes. Set list: Wade in the Water / solo No Bad News When it Don't Come Easy Standing Love Throw a Line Useless Desires The Long Ride ? / solo Up or Down / piano The Kite Song / piano Making Pies Top of the World Silver Bell Tony ? / solo Encore Tracks of My Tears Getting Ready Icicles Falling Encore Free Didn't have to wait long for a highlight this time , as Patty knocked the first pitch out of the park with " Wade in the Water " . Sultry & passionate , then wailing. The audience liked the wailing , & responded. I liked the S & P. Sounded great , & her voice was huskier than usual when she talked , generally a good sign. I screwed up " No Bad News " yesterday , both the title & the quote. She said the name , but other sounds obscured it , & I just caught the end , thinking it was blues , & inferring from the song that it was " Bad News Blues " . That grew on me some. Intense vocals on DCE , but where was Michael's golden instrument ? I know he had it with him , b/c he played it in the opening.tsk. More intense vocals on " Standing ". The intensity & her red sweater flashed me back to a Starr Hill concert when she took streroids for a voice problem , & I remarked that she was " just blazing away in her red dress ". On UD , she was moving along normally when her intensity spiked again towards the end ,& the audience responded. Very responsive audience thru the show , mainly b/c Patty was eliciting it. Another big response for LR , the kind that makes Patty look embarrassed for a moment. Someone shouted out a number of things , but I couldn't make out a word. Apparently Patty could , b/c she said " your wedding song ? ( LR ) , you're darker than I am ". Funny ! Have no idea why I characterized her first unknown solo as a folk song along the lines of " Cold as it Gets " . Not even close. Now I would say it's more a plaintive " love lost " ballad. Maybe I'll try again the next time I hear it. The pre-senile brain is turning to mush. Patty didn't mention if she wrote " Up or Down ". I still have the sense of Tom Waits in it. Possibly just his influence. Forgetting that I already had the name , I thought she was saying " a pourdown " , & had it written ( scrbbled ) in my notes as such until I caught my mistake. Mush , I tell you ! Patty mentioned at the piano , that she had brought her own on this tour. Said she felt more comfortable with it , but that it's missing a wall behind it : ) " Kite Song " was great , & TOTW was top of the world. Great version from Patty & the band. " Tony " was as intense as she's ever done it. Can't say it was her best ever version , but I've never seen her so involved in the story of Tony. Her eyes , facial expressions , & body movements all said she was reliving the desperation & helplessness of the story. Also gave a slightly different perspective on it. When she was singing " hey Tony , what's so good about dying ? " , I pictured someone who had flirted the idea themselves wanting to hear that there WAS something good about it , to give them the rationale they needed for the deed. Very Dark ! Last song of the regular set was the first one yesterday. She said that she became more aware of MLK last year , & wrote it to honor him. " I went up to a mountain because you asked me to " makes a lot more sense in that light. If Patty is looking for dance tunes on this tour , she found a good one in " Tracks of my Tears " . Very upbeat & danceable. She did much better with the words this time. I only noticed her faking/mumbling once : ) " Getting Ready " might fill that bill too. I'm surprised that she hasn't done " Riding with the Amazons " yet. I thought she was going to showcase it , & would like to hear it. Great vocals on the KSGR show. JD had to remind Patty again on capo placement on Icicles. Patty talked a little before starting , & when she heard a buzz coming from the equipment that JD remedied , she said she better get going before everything falls apart. JD said " Too late ! " : ) " Icicles " was a great counterbalancing bookend to " Wade in the Water " at the beginning. Again , the crowd was raucus & drew Patty out for the 2nd encore. Hmmm... Becoming less & less rare. Take note , cities down the road. Still haven't got a good read on " Free". We'll see if it grows. Seems that every time I start wondering if the bloom might be off the rose , Patty turns bright red. Great show ! Definitely don't have this quote exact , but close enough for government work. First, the thing that woman screamed out as a request was 'You Are Not Alone'. She said it over and over and added 'Come on, girl, it was my wedding song!". Patty looked miffed for a moment, then quipped 'That was your wedding song? You're darker than I am!". Very funny moment--and she had several funny moments throughout this show (she seems to be a lot more comfortable in front of an audience--she was very obviously having a grand, grand time at this show and the crowd was the most enthusiastic as I have ever witnessed at any concert ever). Also, the first song of the encore wasn't 'Tracks of my Tears', it was the old Smokey Robinson song 'Tears of a Clown' and she rocked it out (like she did much of her set--very cool to see her dancing and enjoying the beats). I COULD be wrong, but I think the Martin Luther King influence thing was actually the second encore song, 'Free', not the last song of the regular set. Could definetely be wrong about that, though. My third time seeing Patty and I must say, I think every time she couldn't possibly be better and the next time she kicks it up yet another notch. All I can say is it was a moving, unbelievable night. I hope very much she's planning on recording a show on this tour for a dvd release--I think it's about time. She showed a capacity audience at the Barrymore just why she's so respected. Also of note, she bounded onto the stage during the last song of her opening act (her band) set just to play a little percussion instrument and dance. She was the cutest dancing around. I'm not sure everyone realized it was her as there wasn't much cheering when she came on (in strong contrast to the long, long, long cheering in between most songs, which I'll agree with Don tended to leave her looking embaressed a few times at the length of the ovations) and she stayed towards the back. Well, I guess that was more than three things. I'd add more, but Don covered it well. Those of you seeing Patty yet have a LOT to look forward to. Best concert I've ever been to. ~Zach Tired of spam? Patty's music as usual , picked up my appreciation of other music. Allman Brothers music ran through me like electricity on the drive to Chicago , especially the guitar & piano work on " Southbound " & the guitar on " Blue Sky ". Met Rob in line , enjoyed better than predicted weather , & got in the front row. Didn't realize that the floor was going to be open until it started filling up. If I had it to do over , I would have hit the floor. It got really jammed , & I had to stand up to see the stage anyway. Met Jen on the floor , & she did the right thing. Breaking the news in person , & gently. Must be hard to apprise someone of their enormous stupidity. When Patty did the Smokey song , it was listed as " Tears " on the setlist. Patty had done " Tracks of my Tears " before , & my mind immediately jumped there. Never considering the very different tempos & lyrics. Must have confused a lot of folks. The song is " Tears of a Clown ". My apologies to Patty , Smokey & any confused fans. Mush! I tell you ! If I had my druthers the Smokey song Patty would cover would be " Bad Girl " , burned into my youthful hormones in the '50s or early '60s , making me a lifelong Smokey fan. Setlist : ? MLK song / solo Silver Bell No Bad News When it Don't Come Easy Useless Desires Love Throw a Line Standing The Long Ride The Kite Song / piano Up or Down / piano Wade in the Water Top of the World Tony Making Pies Encore Tears of a Clown : ) Getting Ready Icicles Falling Don't have many notes. Very dark , & not much between the songs action , save Patty hitting her mouth on the mike at the piano. Somebody , of course , had it sticking out too far : ) Big responses throughout , but the one I noticed most was after " Standing " . That , " Kite Song " ( guitar was more subdued , allowing the piano to come thru more ) " Icicles " , ' Wade in the Water " & TOTW were my favorites. TOTW & " Tony " didn't seem to hit the level of last night , but TOTW , like " Goodbye " & a few others , is such a great song tht it never disappoints. When Patty introed " Tears " she said she was 41 , & was going to do some Smokey while she had the chance - whether she knew it or not. Then added , " but I do " . She lied. Patty Lied ! I heard her fudge a few lines : ) Patty might have gotten her dancing at Park West if it wasn't so jammed. Just not enough room. Hardly enough to stand. Sold out , by the way. After the first encore , the lights were turned back down , so the applause went on for a long time. When the crowd started chanting Patty's name , the lights went back up , & the music came on. Must have been afraid we'd never go home. Got to get out of here. Chicago Kinko's iinternet rate is 25% higher than the others. Hope the Michigan snow melts soon. But shadows will pass, smoke it will clear If something survives of us around here I'll be glad 'cause I know I was lost in the glow of love Patty Griffin " Icicles Falling " Don ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V9 #81 ********************************
