Got into town a day early to rest up from the long drive. Met up with Rob Hanning before the show at PIn-up Bowl. Not a bar in a bowling alley , but a bowling alley in a bar , with only about 8 lanes. Shot a little pool ( I won ! , good thing it wasn't Dave ). Dr J was right in front of me with hubby in tow , & we caught up on all things Patty. Set list ( of sorts ) : ???? / solo Bad News Blues When it Don't Come Easy Standing Love Throw a Line Useless Desires The Long Ride ???? / solo The Kite Songs / piano Up or Down / piano Making Pies Top of the World Silver Bell Tony Encore Tears of a Clown Getting Ready Icicles Falling 2nd Encore Free Great to hear a lot of new music , but too much new info causes much confusion. First had a gospel / ballad / blues flavor - " went up on a mountain b/c you asked me to" , a line about peace in the valley. Hard to describe. " Bad News Blues was upbeat , with a staccato vocal delivery reminiiscent of Dylan. Liked it , & the arrangement , especially the guitar interplay. I was surprised at the next 4 ID songs , as the vocals strayed farther from what I was used to , than I expected. Guess it's difficult when they haven't been done for awhile. DCE didn't reach the level that it usually does. Vocal rhythms were slightly off the norm , including stressing different syllables in some parts , which I found distracting. Then a too abrupt change near the end. Standing was also different , but at least twice during the song , Patty's passion rose dramatically. I liked it , & the audience responded with approval during the song. Rob said it was his fav version. The highlight of LTAL was Patty's more intense scat at the end , with the audience responding again. UD & LR were closer to the norm than the others. Only things I recall about the next solo song was that she played guitar , & it made me think of a folk song along the lines of "Cold as it Gets" , but not as rhythmic. Rob , Dr J & I had to put our heads together to try to figure out the middle sequence. Got soundman Roy to pass me a set list , but the solo titles weren't noted. Doug played more guitar than usual on " The Kite Song " ; sounded ok , but it obscured the piano composition that I like so much. " Up or Down " gave me the sense of a Tom Waits compositon for some reason. Not sure if I like it yet. Hope it grows on me. Great vocals on TOTW , but as is often the case for me on that one , the nusic was a tad too intrusive during the vocals. The musical ending was very good , tho. When Patty was setting the capo for TOTW , she & JD were going back & forth about it - too low -too high - then Patty pops up with " if I were Bob Dylan , I'd put it anywhere I want ". Her attitude made me think she said " anywhere I DAMN want" , but Rob says ther was no damn. Then comes up with a great line ; " If she were Bob Dylan , I wouldn't be here " : ) Patty then said she was going to a song that some wondered if she would ever play again , & she dusted it off for this tour. They gave " Silver Bell " the " Go Now " treatment by drastically changing the arrangenment. Now jazzy & sultry instead of hard driving. A definite improvement in my opinion , especially in the vocals. Excellent version of " Tony " finished off the regular set. " Tears of a Clown " was OK , in spite of Patty trying to read the words from pages at her feet , & not always succeeding. She had fun with it. " Getting Ready " seems to be a break-up song , as the chorus is " I'm getting ready to let you go" Not the sad type break-up song like " Let Him Fly " , but more like the " I know what's good for me , & it's not you " type. Very upbeat , with a touch of arrogance. Patty wails on it , & got great response. Up until now , I was thinking that there wasn't anything that clearly stood out as the highlight , but then she did " Icicles Falling ". Trademark Patty , with the soulful vocals , & subtle music. The Pageant crowd was stubborn , & got her back for the rare 2nd encore. Just can't recall it well enough to descirbe it much. Maybe next time. Somewhere along the way , Patty mentioned the World Series , & wondered how such a good team fell flat in the series. Said they seemed like the Red Sox. She said her dad was 81 & never saw the Sox win the series , & was worried that he might expire if it happened. Seems to me that if he lived thru the " back from the dead " win over the Hated Yankees , he was safe : ) Opener was Charunga ? Cakewalk , Michael Ramos' project. I would have said band , but he called it his project. Anyway the band was comprised of Patty's band. Mosltly instumental with a Latin flavor. Fine music , but not one of my fav genres. I did like the last song more , but not sure if it was b/c it was more upbeat , or if it was b/c Patty was on the stage , scraping the torpedo , & happily enjoying herself. Got to go & rest up for another long drive tomorrow. Don't bring me no more bad news. ( not sure if it's exact , but the gist ) Patty Griffin " Bad News Blues" Don ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Apr 2005 13:52:24 -0500 From: "Marie" Subject: MM: Park West/Chicago show Hi Everyone Since this is a general admission show, I thought I'd send out my plans if anyone would like to meet up. We're having dinner at Bricks at 1909 N. Lincoln around 5:15-5:30 and probably will get in line around 6:30. Bricks has great pizza and is about 3-4 blocks from Park West. I also have two extra tickets if anyone is looking for some. Marie ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V9 #80 ********************************
