Hi everyone, It's cold outside and I've been sick since Christmas--starting to feel a little bit better, though. Hopefully, I'll be back on my feet soon. I've been listening to a lot of Patty recently in an effort to pick my spirits up. Once again, I find myself wondering what it is about this magnificent performer that continually evokes so much emotion in me. Is it The Voice, the raw lyrical content, the beautful melodies, the detail poured into every song, the tremendous guitar playing? It's interesting to imagine what sort of effect Patty would have on us if she had the Voice, but was only an "ok" songwriter, or if she had the songwriting talent, but couldn't play guitar well etc. It dawned on me that perhaps Patty Griffin is similar to what we call a five-tool player in baseball. For those of you non-baseball fans out there, the five-tool player can do everything well; he can hit for a high average, hit for power, run with speed, play great defence, and throw. True five-tool players are extremely rare. Sure there are many guys that have two or three or perhaps even four of these abilities--and they can be considered "good" ball players--but the five-tool player stands out significantly as a "great" player. Maybe Patty is a five-tool musician--she's got the voice, the poetic lyrics, the melodies, the detailed songs, and the guitar playing. Maybe it is all these components, when thrown into the same mix, that allows us to be moved to such a tremendous degree. I can think of other singer-songwriters I like--some have great voices, some have the lyrics or the melodies, some write detailed songs, and some are vituosos on their accompanying instruments. But, off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone who has all five tools. Patty does. And she gets to me in a way that other writers cannot. It could be that I'm being too scientific about this. It could well be that she gets to us simply because she does. :) Any thoughts? Adam in Toronto ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V9 #12 ********************************
