Landmine concerts , Singer/Songwriter tour , & now Sweet Harmony. Wasn't familiar with David & Gillian , but they certainly held up their end of the Sweet Harmony bargain. Many songs that I didn't know , & most weren't introduced , so I didn't get set lists except for Patty's. Started out with 2 group songs , that included " To Know Him is to Love Him ". Pretty familiar with Emmylou's repertoire , but she only did one of my favorites , " My Baby Needs a Shepherd " with Patty. Fine set , tho , with Emmylou's great voice & performance holding it up. Buddy used the musical team to greatest advantage , with Patty joining him on 2 songs , & Emmylou on another. Patty surprised me with her strident vocals. She's usually pretty muted when she's singing on someone else's songs. Buddy must have asked her to sound off , & she did , with excellent results. Ditto Emmylou. David & Gillian joined him for back- up on another , & they gave us a little taste of their great harmonies to come. Next up ; PG&E , not Pacific Gas & Electric , but Patty , Gillian & Emmylou. Sweet harmony on " Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby " a cappella. One of the highlights of the group set. David & Gillian followed up on their promise with great songs & harmonies in their set. Patty's set : Standing Love Throw a Line Chief Cold as it Gets / solo Nobody's Crying Truth # 2 w/ Emmylou Of course Patty's was the highlight of the individual sets for me , & NC the highlight of the highlight. Funny thing , but her set didn't " detract from the spirit of the show " for me , as Dave McKenna from the Washington Post said of the Wolftrap show. I guess she's feeling better : ) Grand Finale : " The Weight " , one of my all-time favs. Was concerned that their treatment may not do it justice , but not to worry. Alternating vocals were fine , and what took it over the top was the great harmonies & music. That , & PG & E were the far & away the best group songs of the night. First encore was anti-climactic , with " Turn , Turn , Turn " & " Six Days on the Road " not doing much for me. Second encore was better to close it out , with " In My Hour of Darkness. Great show. Would like to have seen more , especially Atlanta where Patty's " sexy growling " during her stint on " The Weight " , elicited spontaneous screams & howls from the crowd , according to the reviewer ( Craig Shelburne ). Big thanks to Murph ( I'd owe him my first-born by now if I had one ) for tix & backstage passes for Karla & I. Didn't get to chat with Patty , tho. Most of her time in our area was spent signing things for her VVAF B/day drive with Murph , & commiserating with Karla over the recent loss of some young friends. She attended the showing right before the concert. Soon after , Karla was unceremoniously told to leave by the theater manager , who holds an old grudge , so we left. And dream of the never never Never leaving harmony Bernie Taupin / Lyrics Elton John / Music Performed by Elton John Don ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V8 #219 *********************************
