Reminiscent of Elliot Smith or Nick Drake, Beam writes delicate, hushed songs and records his musical treasures with a four-track at home. Jolie Holland CD: Escondida Song: "Sascha" Label: Anti A native of Texas, Jolie Holland eventually moved to Canada where she helped start the Be Good Tanyas. She's since returned to the US. This is her second solo album. Sam Phillips CD: A Boot and A Shoe Song: "Open the World" Label: Nonesuch Leslie Phillips was a gospel singer before switching to her childhood nickname, Sam and took on a whole new sound reminiscent of '60s psychedelic folk/pop. Beth Gibbons CD: Out of Season Song: "Mysteries" Label: Sanctuary Known for her beautifully dreary voice as the lead singer for British trip hop band Portishead, Beth Gibbons here joins former Talk Talk bassist Rustin Man for her debut solo release. Wilco CD: A Ghost is Born Song: "At Least That's What You Said" Label: Nonesuch This is the band's follow up to 2002's remarkable Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. John Vanderslice CD: Cellar Door Song: "Pale Horse" Label: Barsuk Records John Vanderslice writes delicate and dark songs carefully crafted with creaking keyboards, buzzing guitars and plenty of distorted drums. The Mountain Goats CD: We Shall All Be Healed Song: "Letter From Belgium" Label: 4AD Circulatory System is a retooled version of '90s psychedelic rockers Olivia Tremor Control.
