I have been listening to Lorna Hunt for about 5 years, so to me she is not new. She did have a very wonderful earlier album called All in One Day, but maybe that is not available anymore. I certainly would recommend her, though I would not compare her to any Ani DiFranco or Indigo Girls. I guess I think those comparisons (though I am a fan of both) are so over-used that they don't mean much anymore. And Lorna's energy is quite different from either of those artists. Other artists I have been listening to lately and some for a long time, that I think Patty fans might enjoy, are: Deb Talan Iron and Wine Kris Delmhorst Tracy Grammer (soon to have a new EP out, in a few weeks) Jeffrey Foucault Kasey Chambers Noam Weinstein Mark Erelli Ariane Lydon Christine Kane - -Jess ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jul 2004 08:41:26 -0500 From: rhonda n Subject: Re: MM: Lorna Hunt and other artists I was definitely paying a compliment to Ms. Hunt in my comparison, as I adore both Ani and the Girls. It's those very comparisons that often keep me listening to someone new, usually to find that these are merely similarity, not imitation. You're right, Jess, perceptions can be biased, though in this case I wouldn't say they were nonrepresentational. To hear you say that the comparison is overused leads me to believe that this analogy holds some water. Of course, we all hear something different. That's one of the beautiful things about music. At any rate; I, for one, appreciate and value your input. r On Jul 11, 2004, at 3:11 AM, Jessica Byers wrote: > I guess people's perceptions of when artists are at the beginning of > their careers is sort of subjective. A band from Australia that you should all check out are The Waifs.....they are brilliant....acoustic guitar, harmonica, great harmonies from two beautiful sisters. My "special" list would inlcude: Dar Williams (for her sweetness) Rose Polenzani (for her quirkiness) Beth Amsel (for the driving songs) Michelle Malone (for a bit of gentle rocking) Beth Hart (for a bit of hard rocking....and her piano) (another Aussie) Renee Geyer (for the best soul you've ever heard....and for her husky voice) Check her out. ...does this sound like an acceptance speech.... Stevie Nicks (for her greatness...i bow down to her) The Indigo Girls (of course) Jennifer Daniels (for lovely songs....particularly Mary's Song) Sarah McLaughlin (for just being you) Susan Tedeschi (for great Blues) Jess Klein (for.....um....for....I just love her) A few other Aussies for you to check out.... My Friend The Chocolate Cake....unusual name I know....but great sounds (Male singer....unusual for me to like a male singer, but he is great.....also great violin) George (classically trained voices on a brother and sister combo.....very smart and beautiful music) Bic Runga (actually a Kiwi, but we Aussies always make them our own) Take my word for it guys...check them out. ....and sorry to anyone I forgot.....you know I love you.... The other recording (All in One Day) is only available in something called "DAD" format, which I'm unfamiliar with so I assumed it wasn't a cd. (Does anyone have any info on this?) I would love to hear it. Jessica, how were you introduced to Lorna's music? I suppose you are right in that Lorna has been at it longer than I inferred, but "Sentimental Bedlam" is a couple years old and I guess I was thinking that one or two recordings is still considered early in one's career. If you're measuring by recordings. Thinking out loud now, I suppose there are lots of artists who are well into their careers who have never made a recording. In any event, I adore her. I hope she will consider coming to Chicago sometime. It looks like she is not touring right now, but is busy writing. Glad to hear there is another fan out there! I'm sure there are many but perhaps not on this list. Wouldn't it be boring if everyone was the same. As long as artists like these keep creating their music from a really true place, everything they come out with will measure up to, if not exceed their previous work.
