I just printed it here for the Patty Griffin completists who want to see everything printed about her. But just because I pass along an article, it doesn't mean that I share the opinions or tone or ??? of the writer. - -- SteveB mad-mission-digest wrote: Date: Wed, 7 Jul 2004 23:59:50 -0600 From: Jessica Byers Subject: MM: Re: Five Records to Buy Instead of Wilco's Except he thinks Cold As It Gets is a break-up song.... Her last "Escondida" album is one of the most charming and original records I have heard this year! She really has a strong inner world to offer to us, poetic, dark, humorous, I love it! Other fave of mines lately, apart from Patty, Wilco and Jolie, are: Jenifer Jackson (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jeniferj2) Richard Julian Grey De Lisle David Mead Ron Sexsmith Allison Moorer Anne McCue (at cdbaby too) Devon Sproule (I'm still amazed - and she's only 21 years old!) (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/devonmusic2) Anny Celsi (at cdbaby too - look for the "Little Black Dress" album) Sam Phillips Jill Sobule Amy Rigby Amy Allison Joe Pisapia (he plays with Guster too - his solo album "Daydreams" is WONDERFUL) Eleni Mandell (if you like PJ you can't miss her!) and so many others!... Cheers, Hugues ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jul 2004 12:48:14 -0500 From: rhonda n Subject: Re: MM: Patty Griffin and Wilco In my opinion, the common thread between Tweedy and Patty is talent and creativity. Wilco is and has been by far one of the most inventive bands of the last decade. Like Patty, they don't try to squeeze themselves into any genre in order to sell records. Amazing artists will sell records, and them and their fans will be hanging around long after the pop princes and princesses of today. That having been said, I'm thrilled to have so many wonderful artists to choose from these days. It seems the blooming generation has been fostered well, and given the freedom to express themselves as individuals. That, I think, is a far cry from we Gen-X'ers, who seemed to have been smashed into creative forms and shapes. Exceptions, like Aimee Mann and Tori Amos, took years to get off the ground but have really stuck around. A formula develops: fit yourself into a mold and prepare to be left behind. I have been discovering some new artists recently, there is some really terrific music out there. Some standouts are: Keane Guster The Be Good Tanyas Snow Patrol Migala Muse A. C. Newman Kings of Leon Owls Beta Band Copeland Myshkin Eels Erin McKeown Jolie Holland The Waifs Failure Franz Ferdinand The Places Red House Painters (Not sure how new they are) The Streets Zero 7 Dispatch Ben Lee I have highlighted the two artists who are really exciting me right now. There's so many other fabulous musicians, some that I'm listening to right now (assuming you care:) Tom Waits String Cheese Incident Pure Prairie League Emmylou Harris Dar Williams Lucinda Williams Nick Cave Joan Armatrading Jay Farrar (Wilco's redheaded stepchild, alt-country g*d. Awesome lyricist and guitar player) Gomez Clem Snide And I would be remiss if I didn't mention some staple favorites: Patty (goes without saying, I guess) Tori PJ Beth Orton Aimee Mann Cake Afghan Whigs Natalie Merchant Pete Yorn Oh, there are more, but I have to get to work. Do share some of your favorites. r On Jul 9, 2004, at 11:33 AM, hugues wrote: > both released some of this year's masterpieces, in my humble opinion > :-) > > though they're pretty different, I think there's a common point between > Patty and Jeff Tweedy musically > > "Cold As It Gets" for example, isn't far from the style of some > Tweedy's > songs > > Hugues ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V8 #177 *********************************
