In not defending Seattle audiences, I've attended very few shows where the crowd was "energetic". The last time Patty was here, I remember it being a very sedate crowd. Same for Jonatha Brooke and Leo Kottke and David Wilcox. We're just laid back man..... The one thing I find very annoying is that there are usually some morons who feels they have to bellow at the beginning of each and every song. And, do the same ear piercing "yea ha" or whatever immediately at the end of every song. You hear them on the bootlegs all the time. Sometimes it seems like they are trying to impress the performer with how big a fan they are. I don't know how artists feel about the bellowing, but it bugs me. I've seen more response from a performer when someone quickly says, "Thank you David" after a song, or "That song was me Patty" during the lull between the applause and the start of the next song. I didn't make the Starbucks gig or the show. I detest just about anything about Seattle. (You'd have to live here to understand), and it seems that most of the shows I want to see are a wee knight, and getting up at 4 in the morning for work precludes a life during the week. And Seattle always seems to be an afterthought to tour planning anyway. Seems California gets the bulk of the Friday and Saturday night shows. Perhaps next time she's here. I was really planning on making the Starbucks show, but I had to move a yard of gravel so we could use our driveway again. john in sumner wa ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jun 2004 08:26:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Steve Berry Subject: MM: Re: Patty in Seattle I knew Don would provide the set list, so I didn't even take notes! Strange for me. Rhianon, I looked for you in the bar, but I didn't see you! But I am notoriously bad at locating people in crowds, especially in dark places. Yes, Don and I had an interesting music discussion, about the relative merits of albums vs. individual songs, and I found Don to be a very interesting person. Sorry I had to flit afterward, Don.... I just barely had time to catch a late ferry back to Bainbridge Island. A couple of notes: The sound was a bit murkier and muddier at first than most shows I've seen at the Moore. I was quite a few rows back, but I enjoyed the show nonetheless. Most of Patty's CD sound quite sad and dark, but it is interesting to me that when I hear the songs in concert, she infuses them with a certain sense of glee, of optimism, that I don't hear on the CDs. Now I can't wait to see Patty with Emmylou and Buddy in Portland at the Zoo! - -- SteveB ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Jun 2004 09:21:05 -0700 From: "Caroline Klumpar" Subject: RE: MM: Re: Patty in Seattle Also in defense of the Seattle audience for Patty's Monday show, a lot of us were quietly, raptly, trying to *listen* to Patty and her incredibly wonderful voice. Enthusiasm and energy take different forms, not all of which make the *fan* the center of attention or interfere with the ability of others to see and hear the show. Different strokes and all, I guess.
