Thanks Pink. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 2004 18:54:20 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: Ford / Los Angeles 6-17-04 Previous day's blahs disappeared in the 100 degree desert heat as I headed out for LA with the Beatles & Pretenders up first. Got out at a rest stop , & just loved that blast of dry heat. It's fine if you don't stay in it too long , or exert yourself , which I rarely do. It stayed around 100 until I got about 70-80 m from LA , then dropped 30 degrees by the time I hit LA. Took me over an hour to find my hotel , as I was the victim of bad Mapquest directions , & was up & down the street & Hwy 101 about 5 times before I called the hotel. A bit chilly in LA , & didn't pack any jackets or even a long sleeve shirt again. Didn't realize that the concert would be outdoors , ( Duh ! Ford AMPHITHEATER ! ). It got chilly & windy enough that I had to go buy a blanket before Craig finished. Met up Steve & Larry in line , & Larry's poor little homeless waif daughter , Kirby. Set list : Standing Love Throw a Line Making Pies Chief Blue Sky Icicles Kite Song / piano / Doug Mother of God / piano / Doug Forgiveness / solo Flaming Red / Doug Long Ride Home / Michael L. Top of the World Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls Truth # 2 Mil Besos When it Don't Come Easy Encore Florida ( incomplete ) Mad Mission Sweet Lorraine Went for a coke & some munchies before Patty came on , & some guy was woo ! -ing & yeah! - ing loudly for awhile , then started banging himself loudly into the metal fence while waiting in line. A few of us had the impression that it was only a matter of time before he got thrown out. He showed up in the first row , & was quiet for Standing , but then started singing along loudly to MP. Someone else was telling him loudly to shut up , but to no avail. Didn't notice him during Chief , but during Blue Sky , he got dancing along the front row , waving his long blond mop about , & just ignored security until they overpowered him , & dragged him off. Surprisingly , I noticed him back later , quiet as a mouse. They must have " negotiated " with him. I think he was the one who shouted out Forgiveness right before Patty played it as one of her solos. Appropriate , & an excellent version. Patty got a big standing O to open the show & , as at a few other shows , had Standing punctuated with applause & shouts. People around me actually stood up a number of times thru the show , but I wasn't disturbing my blanket for anything but the encore , & last song. I was surprised that Patty didn't seem more affected by the chill , as she only had a light sweater on. She did mention it twice , & seemed a little more affected as the show wore on. I had the impression that her vocals weren't as strong later in the show. She told a story about seeing Pavarotti & Leontyne Price once , & Luciano had on a little hat against the chill , saying that it was to protect his voice by retaining heat. Someone offered her a scarf , & someone else threw a hat onstage. She declined b/c , she said , she's not a hat person. When she was reminded that she did wear a hat before , she agreed , but said it was funny looking. Fashion statement again : ) My usual favorites , as nothing seemed to stand out more or less than previous versions at the other ( great ) shows. ID songs , FR , Go Now , Mil Besos , Forgiveness & Mad Mission. During Florida , one of her dogs got loose , & started running around the stage , Patty didn't notice until she started jumping on her leg. Patty laughed & picked her up , calling the dog her supermodel , which was very descriptive , b/c she was very thin , but had a very striking appearance. I think she called her Laddie , but did say it was female. Her other dog's name is Bean. Patty said that Florida was almost over anyway , & if anyone wanted to hear the ending , it's on ID. Then she said that she noticed the audience getting excited while she was singing , & thought " wow ! they must REALLY like this ". Very funny. Larry & daughter Kirby brought 2 pieces of paper with " Sweet " written on one , & " Lorraine " on the other , in big red letters. They put them on the edge of the stage duriung the encore , & it must have worked , b/c SL was not on the set list. Off to SF. THere is a video of her playing Sessions at AOL. She plays "Rain", "Making Pies" and "Tomorrow Night". It is amazing! So, for you AOL users, type in Keyword: music video and look up Patty Griffin. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 2004 19:54:50 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: Fillmore / San Francisco 6-18-04 Met up with Dana , & friend Terry in Berkeley , & got a ride into SF again. 3 trips to SF , & haven't had to drive into the city yet , thanks to Dana & friends. A great stress reliever to avoid driving into big , unfamiliar cities. Thanks again. Met up with Jerry Skomer EARLY in line , while Dana & Terry dined. Great to have someone interesting to talk to during a long wait. Friend Mariam showed after awhile , & Jerry's wife Elana showed after we got in. We opted to go for the few balcony seats , to avoid another 3-4 hours of standing. Set list: Standing Love Throw a Line Top of the World Icicles Making Pies Chief Kite Song / piano / Doug Mother of God / piano / Doug Backwater Blues / ( Bessie Smith ) / solo Moses / solo Long Ride Home / Michael L. Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls Truth # 2 Mil Besos When it Don't Come Easy Encore Birds / ( Neil Young ) / Craig Mary Blue Sky 2nd Encore 10 Million Miles Don't know if it was the balcony seats , but Patty's voice didn't seem loud enough compared to the instruments for me. Even on BB , where she was solo , it seemed that her voice was too low. Great version , but seemed to lack the power of Patty's usual take on it.The accordion seemed much too loud compared to Patty on MP , overshadowing her vocals , but was OK on the others. TOTW & Icicles were earlier in the set than usual , & didn't seem as strong as when they're done later on in the set. Very loud crowd , again punctuating Standing with applause & shouts. Moses was a very good version , & when the audience shouted requests afterward , as is often the case , someone shouted Free Bird ; to my mind , in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Had the impression that Patty thought they were making fun of the song , & she spoke in defense of it. Also quietly sang at least the 1st 6-8 lines from it. I was delighted with it all. Very loud pop came from the piano mike sometime before the encore , & Patty said it's b/c Michael R. needs attention. As she took the piano for the encore , she said she was afraid to touch the mike , but if this is where she's going to die , she guesses that it would be the best place. That's our trouper ! Another loud pop , & some technical difficulties with the mikes before we got started again. Passed on the bathroom break at intermission , so I had some urgency to get there , & decided to beat the rush by heading out during Blue Sky. Stood at the back while it finished , & headed for the lobby to meet up with everyone , I would / could have sworn the the floor was half-empty , judging by the amount of people I saw go out , & the crush in the lobby , but the die- hards inside were still making a lot of noise with clapping , ( as I was ) , stomping & whistling. They finally got her out for a 2nd encore. Lucky for me , b/c when I went to write it down , I discovered that I left the set list & notes on the table. Usual suspects were my favorites , plus Birds & 10 MM , but I have a complaint. Where is The Rowing Song ? Haven't heard it since Lawrence. Not only is the audience deprived of it , but Michael Rrrramos ( who needs attention ) doesn't get to play with his wonderful golden instrument ( trumpet of course ) : ) Free posters were passed out as we left , making for one more great ending in additon to 10 MM. Dropped off at my car in Berkeley , & started out for the 650 m trip to Portland.
