Back in the day , my consciousness was on the music , & my subconscious took care of the driving , but now when the road demands my attention , the music is lost. Some of the areas were very isolated , & even desolate. But , not to worry ; if I break down , Patty will drive out & find me : ) That woman is truly a gem. Got plenty of sleep , & still had 6 hours to kill. Found a 24 hour Kinko's , checked my mail , filled up the tank , & headed for the venue. Found it , & the pizza place Sarah suggested , then settled into the corner bar ( what else ? ). Pestered the bartender into putting on some music , & the organ I heard reminded me of Jimmy Smith , who had a hit in the 50's or early 60's with "Walk on the Wild Side". Discounted it , thinking that at my age , everybody & everything seems familiar. But Jimmy Smith it was , & it was good. Caught the reflection of a very attractive woman in the beer case , & turned to watch her walk by. As soon as she got out of sight , another came along. 'twas Patty herself ( I was preeettty sure it was Patty , but wondered , b/c her shopping buddy Eliza wasn't with her ) , all by her lonesome. Quickly quelled the urge to run out & say something , so as not to alienate her , & went back to Jimmy. So I don't know if my Patty radar is working , 'cause it was my male radar that caught her this time. Found a short , but pithy review in a local entertain- ment mag that was so good , I have to reprint it manually. ********************************************************* BEHIND THE MUSIC It's funny ; Santa Fe was just graced with the presence of JJ Cale , a man better known for songwriting than singing , when along comes - to some extent - his female counterpart. Patty Griffin has written songs for the Dixie Chicks & Emmylou Harris , & opened for the latter plus Lucinda Williams and well , just about every great female singer-songwriter there is. But , like Cale , she more than holds her own as a headliner , finally putting in the spotlight what's been quietly kicking ass for years : herself. With a blend of compassionate lyrics & deceptively gentle melody , Griffin's been producing amazing work for years. Local fave Eliza Gilkyson will open. Jonanna Widner ********************************************************** Nice. Met up with Sarah ( morgsarah ) , her husband , & 3 friends before the show. 4 archeologists & 1 art history major made for fascinating dinner chat. Had 3 extra tix thanx to Gillian , Sarah & myself , & made 3 Patty fans very happy , as I moved them up front from the back rows. Set list: Standing Love Throw a Line Making Pies Chief Blue Sky Icicles / Doug / JD Kite Song / piano / Doug Mother of God / piano / Doug Christina / solo Cold as it Gets / solo Backwater Blues / ( Bessie Smith ) / solo Long Ride Home / Michael L. Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls Truth # 2 Mil Besos When it Don't Come Easy Encore Birds ( Neil Young ) / Doug Top of the World Mad Mission The live version of Standing has definitely moved out of the shadow of the CD cut for me. I seem to like it more at every show. Patty seemed to have minor voice problems early on , don't recall exactly where. Also a little gruff in areas. The gruffness sounded good on MM , though. Patty & Doug were great on Icicles. As great a piano/solo set as I've heard with Kite & MOG being their usual great versions , & Patty knocking out Christina , CAIG , & Bessie's "Backwater Blues". Saw something on BB that I don't recall seeing for awhile ; Patty back away from the mike as she played , & mouth a few words or some scat. She used to do that often on FR , & it was always a sign that she was caught up in the song. Also like the faraway vocal effect it has. It was about here that I was becoming disappointed with the crowd response. It was the quietest crowd that I had seen yet. The kind of audience I used to hope for , so that I could catch all the nuances of Patty's vocals. But someone mentioned synergy lately , & I think that's a factor. Don't think Patty was "feelin' the love" that she usually does , & singing started to look like a chore for awhile. There a was point on UD when I thought her voice was on the verge of going flat , & my sense was that she was just going thru the motions for a short time. It seemed to be difflcult for her to work up the loose feel that makes Go Now a great addition to the set now. Go Now , Truth # 2 & PWG didn't get the response they usually do. She seemed more relaxed again by MB , & she & Michael R. did it proud. Don't Come Easy may have been helped a tad by the more somber mood , & slayed me once more. I was surprised that they came out so quickly for the encore , & I'm glad they did or the Lensic crowd might have lost interest. After a great encore the applause faded fast. Now here's a first ; Doug's guitar wasn't loud enough on Blue Sky , UD & TOTW in the parts between Patty's vocals. May have been speaker placement , but I don't think so. Eliza had a short set again. Don't know why. She's on the bus. Should be there on time. One day I'm going to have to see a full Eliza set. Going on 2 hours online. Got to go. Night ride to Tucson : ) What a long strange trip it's been ??????????????? If you don't mind revealing a "trade secret," how early are you thinking will suffice? If anybody wants to say hi, I am tall (6-5) with glasses and a goatee and will probably be wearing my usual off-work uniform of shorts and Tevas. My daughter resembles me, but is often mistaken for a homeless runaway. (My wife and I still raise the occasional quiet objection to her sartorial choices, but long ago decided to conserve our heavy ammo for more important battles.) We are both pretty hard-core, but we tend to have different favorite Patty songs, I suspect because of our different genders. Anybody else notice this, or is it just us? To change the subject for a second, why do mainstream radio programmers seem to be so afraid of Patty? If Norah Jones and Coldplay and Five For Fighting can sell millions of CDs (and I am not begrudging them their success), is it so far-fetched that similar numbers of listeners might swoon over "When It Don't Come Easy"? Lensic, Santa Fe, June 14th, 2004. I am honored that Patty preformed last night, and I was but 5 feet from her; the stage and the venue nice and small, the sound nice and big. The crowd, as Don mentioned, not the best Ive ever seen, but not the worst (has anyone here experienced an English audience?). Appreciative, but not balls-out nuts. A beautiful, warm New Mexico night, and Eliza warmed the stage for Patty in a way only she could, here in her home town. Patty took the stage in a beautiful champagne satin top with a matching long embroidered skirt, slit up the sides all the way, asymmetrically cut, over a pair of jeans, the flamin red heels, and champagne embroidered wrist cuffs to match. (Maybe bought in Santa Fe, as she mentioned that they had been Shopping and eating since yesterday, Man we gotta get outa here!) Her hair lighter than I remembered, beautifully matching the champagne satin. Then her voice. Standing opened the set with her voice stronger than ever.tears to my eyes. The Backwater Blues song by Bessie Smith made me ache for more blues to be voiced by our little songbird. Dont Come Easy closed the set with tears in my eyes yet again, and the 3 hour drive home felt like 5 minutes as I relived the show in my mind. Patty. Thank-you. sarah (morgsarah).
