I have seen Patty 5 times at various festivals, but never as a headliner...the Austin show was SO amazing. She looked and sounded absolutely stunning!! It was like a sauna up by the stage, no breeze at all (on the upside, I lost 5 pounds)...but it was totally worth it. After Craig Ross finished his set, I placed a candle onstage for Patty. I own a local soy candle business and I made a "Flaming Red" candle just for her. I hope she got it...I expected to see M&Ms and various other things for her, but my candle was the only thing up there. Anyway, I left Stubbs Friday night with the biggest smile on my face!! The show was the best ever. :) I wish she would play at the Paramount Theatre sometime...she would totally sell it out! Come back home and play anytime Patty, Austin loves you! Can't wait to see Patty next Sunday and I'm glad to see that Portland is going to show up! Just got this notice on the Aladdin news letter that there are only a few tickets left and I thought their pitch for the show was insightful and worth sharing. Roy - -------------------- SUN JUNE 20 PATTY GRIFFIN (Less than 100 tickets left) w/ Craig Ross Tickets $21.50 adv / $24.00 dos Doors 7pm / Showtime 8pm Patty Griffin's Impossible Dream comes with a word of caution from the artist. "There's no ear candy this time," she says. A veteran listener could be forgiven for wondering what in the world she's talking about. Every Patty Griffin album offers, often simultaneously, beauty and challenge. The depth of her lyric writing and the intensity of her singing have never relented, and if her last studio album, 1000 Kisses, ended on the exultant note of the Mexican ballad, "Mil Besos," every second of that exultation felt honestly earned for both singer and audience. But Impossible Dream does return her to a world of even greater emotional and social turmoil, the world in which her "Truth #2" became, for her friends the Dixie Chicks, the song that spoke most clearly about what it's like to be censored. Griffin doesn't write protest music but songs like "Don't Come Easy" and "Cold As It Gets" come straight out of a way of seeing the world with politicized eyes. At times here, Griffin sounds like one of her great influences, James Baldwin, nevermoreso than on the opening track, "Love Throws a Line," where the point is that either we catch on to the value of loving one another or we're all sunk. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2004 13:01:35 -0700 From: Matt Haven Subject: Re: MM: Only a few tickets left for Portland show.... I'm really disappointed that I won't be able to go because I'll be in Hawaii (I know, really sad, please send your condolences). Guess I'll have to wait until she plays in Medford. Unfortunately, I'm not a very big Emmylou fan - I just hope I get to hear plenty of Patty songs, too. It was doing just that, but I couldn't place who performed it. I went through several of my CD's (Patty Larkin? Jennifer Knapp?) in search of an answer. No luck. Finally, I heard "that song" twice one day while listening to KLCC (Eugene, Oregon) and KTBG (Warrensburg, Missouri) on line. It was "Love Throw a Line". I don't have the CD yet. I wait until the end of the year to see if I'll win it from our local WNCW, then either buy it or ask for it as a gift. One of those "sweet" sounding voices with a twang (a la the Demented Iris, with whom she's performed) that sticks with you. I've been listening to her 1998 release "Hydrienga"; have got her long-overdue follow up "You Call That Dark" on my "hope I win it from WNCW/to buy/to ask for as a gift" list. One of about 20 or so releases so far this year that qualifies as being worthy of being on a "Ten Best" list.
