Hit the Dallas area around rush hour , was fighting sleep & fatigue , & hoping to find a rest stop when the intense organ music from Styx's "Castle Walls" drilled through it all & lifted my alertness back to a safe level. The song just seemed to be screaming at me. Patty & Susan Greenbaum carried me the rest of the way to Austin. Saved again by the fine folks who make great music. Straight to bed , & 11 hours sleep. Got to Stubb's early , & was able to catch sound check on the patio. Michael R. & Doug were working on Mil Besos before Patty got there , & I was impressed with the soulful sounds that Michael was sqeezing out of his accordian. It's harder to notice when Patty is singing. After Patty arrived , I got to hear Don't Come Easy , & a number of others , including a new piano song twice. At one point , Michael paid a little tribute to the late great Ray Charles by playing the opening bars of Ray's biggest early hit ; What'd I Say. Ray was one of the Big Men of my early years. Aside to Karla ; I told Doug you said hi : ) Set list; Standing Love Throw a Line Making Pies Chief Blue Sky Icicles Mother of God / piano / Doug Kite Song / piano / Doug Forgiveness / solo ??????? / ( Bessie Smith ) / solo Long Ride Home / Michael L. Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls Truth # 2 Mil Besos When it Don't Come Easy Encore Rain Birds / ( Neil Young ) / piano / w/ Shawn Colvin / Doug & Craig Mary / w/ Shawn Colvin Been awhile since Patty treated hometown Austin to a full set , & they let out quite a roar when she came on stage. Continued loud cheering at a number of points early on , & I mean REALLY loud. Patty was overwhelmed , & said she felt like a Beatle : ) PATTYMANIA !!! Maybe the live versions are starting to make the studio version fade , but Patty knocked out Standing , & I quickly voted it best version yet. Song after song at the top of the scale. Don't know how long Patty's vocal problems persisted , but they were gone for sure now , with her bustin' the high , strong notes wide open. The Bessie Smith song was about a flood , & Patty introed it , remarking on all the rain Austin had been getting for 5 days or so. It rained hard earlier in the day , then the sun came out , HOT , & added to the humidity by evaporating what fell. The ground at Stubb's was muddy , & I worried about my Flaming Reds getting all muddy. Patty burned another Bessie Smith song awhile back. From what I recall there , & the way she knocked out this one. ( don't think it was the same song ) , all I have to say is , MORE Bessie Smith Patty ! MORE blues songs Patty ! Patty did Long Ride with Michael L. only using the tambourine. During , or after Truth # 2 , another LOUD roar , & Patty was beaming when she said " I totally LOVE my town " , which of course , only prompted more. The really thunderous roar came after Patty reappeared for the encore. She always says WOW ! when she gets that , but this time is was so loud that I said WOW!. Didn't catch Shawn's name when Patty announced her , & wrote down "Michelle Kovan ? " . Worse part is that i didn't recognize her. My recall of her from S/S shows was very relaxed , smiling , & casually dressed. None of these were the same. She seemd a little nervous , had a dress on , & a more formal hair style then I remembered. When Patty said Shawn later , I looked closer & realized who it was. Liked the Birds song better at sound check , but the Patty / Shawn version of Mary was very good. When Patty was crediting Shawn at one point , Shawn did the mock , extended arms , worshipping bow towards Patty. Everyone shouted approval but Patty. Saw Amber after the show , with 3 of her lady friends who were out for the night , & got an invite to join them. Someone said we had to do a shot at Touche to start things off , & I suggested " finger me good " from my Kansas "Moon Bar" experience. All agreed it was a tasty drink , & a good choice , so my life hasn't been wasted after all. Crown Royale & butterscotch schnapps. Try it. It is Tasty ! After watching incredibly raw behavior at Coyote Ugly , we finished up at a place with a jazz / something ? group. The ladies left , & I tried a few more places where promising music drew me in , but the promise was never fulfilled. "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day" Performed by Jethro Tull Don ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jun 2004 04:17:22 -0400 From: "Donald Henn" Subject: MM: Granada / Dallas 6-12-04 Got to Dallas in plenty of time , & found a great parking spot. Decided to walk & look for an internet cafe. After about 1/2 mile , asked someone , & they gave me directions to Kinko's. Said it wasn't far. I should have asked if they meant " not far " driving , or " not far " walking in the 90+ degree sun. I'd say about 1 1/2 - 2 miles. By the time I got there , I didn't have enough time to do anything but whittle down my E-mail. Same distance back , & I was grateful for an air-conditioned restaurant. Then another 40 min. waiting outside. Very cool inside. Front & center but still 10 feet from the stage. Set list ; Standing Love Throw a Line Chief Rain Blue Sky Icicles / Doug & JD Florida / solo Moses / solo Christina / solo Long Ride Home / Michael L. Top of the World Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls Truth # 2 Mil Besos When it Don't Come Easy Encore Let Him Fly / Doug Mad Mission 2nd Encore Sweet Lorraine Not as much as Austin , but another rousing crowd , & another stand-out Standing. Again , the 1st 2 songs were punctuated with cheers & applause. Patty was in great voice , & even with Kite Song , MOG ( no piano ) , Rowing Song , & Cold as it Gets missing from the set list , I liked the show as well as any. Moses , LHF , Christina & Mad Mission all highlights. B/c I haven't heard them often lately , & b/c Patty delivered top-notch versions. Patty started TOTW with just JD , then the Michaels came out after awhile , & I was thinking " no Doug again ! " then Doug came out. Soon after that Patty lost her place , & went back a few verses. A broad smile crossed her face when she realized that she was singing the same verses over again , & the crowd gave her a big hand for geting thru it. As soon as she got confident about where she was in the song , her vocal intensity picked right back up. Crowd was a litle too raucous , with a lot of shouting during Don't Come Easy , & singing along. There were so many singing on MM , that I started to join in , but didn't like my voice as much as Patty's , & stopped : ) LHF is one of those with a wide range of versions. Tonight's was top of the scale again. Unlike the Austin crowd , they didn't let up when the music came on after the 1st encore , & Patty came back out for Sweet Lorraine. Eliza Gilkyson did a short set , but sounded like an old friend. Did 2 songs that I wasn't familiar with. One , I liked a lot , & one , I liked a little. More intense than usual , but even w/o telling the funny stories that I heard on the last tour , she cracked up the audience. I think she could make it in stand-up if she ever tried. Met Wendy of TDtT ( folkiegirl ) , & friend up front , so we had lively discussion to kill the hour & 1/2 wait inside. Off for a night ride to Santa Fe. She and her daugher are very special recent Patty converts and I'm soooo disapointed I couldn't share the show with them..... Roy - --------- Hello Sweetheart, Well the concert was amazing! I can honestly say it was one of the best I have ever seen...ever! A combination of things, the venue, Patty, Eliza, the crowd, having Rebecca with me...everything. The music was really late in starting and one website said 7, one said 8, the marquee said 7:30 and Rebecca and I arrived at 8. The music didn't actually start til after 9. Eliza was wonderful and a I could tell a lot of people didn't know her but by the second song they were totally engaged. She sang Richmond Boy, before the break up and then and after the break up version, very funny I will try to remember some and send it. I went to buy Milk and Honey and she was signing and that is where I talked to her. That is where I told her how happy I was that she was there and how I was the envy of Patty fans everywhere cuz they were going to have to listen to the "other guy". Eliza spun around in circles laughing as did the others in line. I had her put your name on the cd and told her Roy was my Portland Boy. We chatted briefly about that and it was fun. Also, I was so glad Rebecca got to see her and I could tell how much she was enjoying herself. Then came Patty. She was not wearing what I would have expected but a kind of slinky lime green knit shirt with a black knee length knit skirt and yes, red spike do me pumps. Her hair was all over, everywhere....adorable. She started with "Standing" and the crowd went nuts....OMG! The crowd was passionate, I think would be the best was to describe them. 20 somethings to 60 somethings but mostly 30's and 40's. And you know how the synergy between the artist and the audience effects the whole experience. Patty was much bolder than the other times I had seen her...not shy at all...very animated...dancing and everything. She sang a great cross section of songs and 2 that I didn't know and I will have to do some research. I sent some TMs to you but couldn't send all because I was so moved....yes, moved.....and moving...a lot. I was SOOO glad to be standing!!! Rebecca and I got a spot near a railing very close to the stage and on a step so we were at eye level. It would have been horrible to be stuck in a chair!! The band was awsome and was having a great time playing together. The theater is on Greenville Av and is miles of clubs, music, outdoor eating, great shops, bumper to bumper traffic....very cool. I know Rebecca really enjoyed seeing it all and has said thank you dozons of times. After the show (the audience was able to bring Patty back out 3 times) we walked across the street for a snack at an outdoor place and didn't get home til after 1. Well, I wanted to get this out and will tell you more later but don't want to spoil anything for you. I am sure every concert is quite different though. I could be wrong, but I can't help thinking that the very uninhibited and adoring crowd contributed to Patty's experience on stage last night. I am glad to hear the move is going well and hope it continues to go well. Love, Me P.S. Low Rise Long and Lean Jeans, new black belt, Black see through knit shirt with a pale pink underthing, rhinestones of course. I didn't stress about it but the response was good ;>), which is always suprising, amusing, fun.....wish you had been there! XOXOXO P.P.S Ooo, ooo, ooo....I forgot to tell you one of the coolest parts....the stage! Behind Patty and her band was entirely black and suspended from the ceiling were 3 white kites, shaped like birds with 6 foot wingspans. They would be backlit with different colors at various times and it was beautiful and very dramatic against the black. Sometimes the birds were backlit with purples, pinks and yellows and sometimes reds. yellows and oranges. So they kind of glowed...very cool! That's all for now...
