Ordered tix for the west coast swing , & whittled down my E-mail. Threatening weather cleared up enough for me to have pizza on the patio of the Rock Bottom Brewery next to the Milwaukee river before the show. One of the things I like about my trips is watching the birds that play on the air currents above the highways. Not too much of that this trip , but they were out in force in Downtown Milwaukee. I rarely stop to smell the roses , but always like watching the birds. The big ones soaring above the tallest buildings , & the smaller ones darting between. I liked the small ones that would flap vigorously for awhile , then fold their wings in , & shoot between the buildings like a bullet. Set list: Standing Love Throw a Line Making Pies Chief Blue sky Icicles / Doug & JD Different Drum / solo Cold as it Gets / solo Kite song / piano / Doug Take it With Me / piano / solo Useless Desires Go now Perfect White Girls Truth # 2 Mil Besos When it Don't Come Easy Encore Flaming Red / Doug Top of the World Standing was a little more soulful than usual. When Patty introduced Different Drum , she said she hadn't played it in 20 years. First half was about the same as the previous version , but it seemed that she got more comfortable midway thru & started putting more of her own spin on it. Looked forward to the next one , but she didn't do it again. Seems that the Kite Song pulls me in more than I thought. Every time she does it , the ending takes me by surprise. There was absolute silence as she finished it. Big finish with FR & TOTW. At most shows , the crowd seems prepared to bring her out for a 2nd encore , but dies down once the lights come up , & the music comes on. Forgot to mention in Chicago , that Patty gave us a thrill by lifting her skirt. Seems that the battery pack she had on her back ruined her " fashion statement " , so they came up with a neoprene strap around her thigh to hold it , & she showed us. Guess it wasn't very comfortable , b/c I noticed it on her back again after that. Once painfully shy Ms. Griffin is now boldly going where she's never gone before on stage : ) Thought a thought Then I forgot So I sang a happy song In my head , in my head Patty Griffin "Flaming Red" Don ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jun 2004 12:44:06 -0400 From: "Sarah Stanley" Subject: MM: upload new stuff Just wondering... for those of us not lucky enough to get to any of the shows this solo tour and also for those of us who don't necessarily want to get a bootleg of a full show -- is it possible to upload some/any of these new songs/covers Patty has done, to the wonderful Jen/Murph & Co. site? Maybe replace some of the older stuff on there if there isn't a lot of space for mp3's? (for those not familiar, i mean the www.pattygriffin.net site in the "media" section). Just a thought.... :) Sarah ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You're gonna dance to jah music, dance, We're gonna dance to jah music, dance, Forget your troubles and dance, Forget your sorrows and dance, Forget your sickness and dance, Forget your weakness and dance. . ." -- Bob Marley ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jun 2004 13:00:57 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Fitzgerald / St Paul 5-18-04 Loaded up 7 CDs & hit the road for 6-7 hours. Patty , The Doors , & The Pretenders. Was surprised at how taken I was by The Doors. Seems that Patty's music set me up for a big infusion of Doors spirit. Met up with Gillian & friends pre-show. Did a tik swap , so that Gillian & I sat together , & her friend got to move from the balcony to the 5th row. Set list : Standing Love Throw a Line Chief Rain Blue Sky Icicles Kite Song / piano / Doug Mother of God / piano / Doug Forgiveness / solo Be Careful / Doug Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls Truth # 2 Mil Besos When it Don't Come Easy Encore Tony Mary Icicles , KS & MOG is Patty at her best , then she tops it off with a knockout version of Forgiveness. Don't know if my old heart can take it. Good thing she saved Don't Come Easy for later , or I might not be here now. No notes on BC , so I guess it was done w/o a hitch this time. The lightness / fun break lasted for 4 songs this time. Go Now thru Mil Besos. Haven't mentioned Mil Besos much , but it is always good , & Patty always seems to enjoy it. Topped off the regular set with Don't Come Easy , still my favorite , & still knocking me out. Don't have any notes on it for some reason , but it was around this time that I noticed drummer Michael's excellent subtle playing during the quieter parts of this song. Wouldn't you know that the next night , he came up with a loud , tricky beat during the upbeat part that I found completely distracting. Great to hear Tony again , but the music , especially the drums , was a tad loud. Someone suggested that it was b/c Michael didn't know the song yet , was just feeling his way thru. When Patty had trouble with Mary , I had missed part of the intro , & thought she had vocal problems. Seems that Traci Goudie's grandfather had just passed away , & Patty had dedicated the song to him ( or her ). She was choking up with emotion for her friend's loss. Sad ending to a great show. And I wonder where you are And if the pain ends when you die Patty Griffin "Goodbye" Don ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jun 2004 14:49:53 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Hotel Fort Des Moines 5-19-04 Driving down I-35 from St Paul was a dream compared to some of the east coast trips. Smooth , uncrowded roads , & 7 CDs ready to go. Mostly Patty , Zeppelin , & PP & M this time. Checked in & headed for the venue. While approaching , I barely noticed a man & woman across the street headed in the other direction. Wide street , so I was pretty far away. After we passed , it struck me that the man might have been Greg , Patty's road manager. Had the impression that the woman was very young , 20-25. Parked in a bar on the corner to await the show , & saw them coming back. Saw that it was Greg , & he was walking a dog. Wondered who else was walking the other one , & who comes into sight but Patty. Looks like my Patty radar is on the blink. She has such a youthful demeanor that it never crossed my mind that it was her until I could see her face. Gillian showed up with another friend , & we got to chat again for a little while. Great to meet , & hang out with Gillian over the 4 shows she attended. Another of the many great fans & special people that I've met in my travels. Set list : Standing Love Throw a Line Chief Rain Blue Sky Icicles / Doug / JD Rowing Song Kite Song / piano / Doug Take it With Me / piano / solo Poor Man's House / solo Mary / solo Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls Truth # 2 Mil Besos When it Don't Come Easy Encore Flaming Red / Doug Top of the World Some comments about a rude crowd & other distractions , but I didn't notice. Smaller venue , & it had more of a surround sound feel than the others. Patty's always encouraging the audience to get up & dance , & a few did , including one who was dancing to everything. Been noticing that Patty seems to smile often , for no apparent reason , when she's doing Standing. Since she says that she still gets nervous , & even ill sometimes before a show , I'm going to attribute it to being the "iron smile " of insecurity before she settles in to the music. She introed the Rowing Song , saying that she had her parents in mind when she wrote it. Hmmm... No letters from home ? She went into TIWM saying that it's the only love song she knows. Now , Patty , I know it's about heartbreak , but Ruby's Arms is definitely a love song. PMH was great , & along with Forgiveness , best LWG material this tour. Liked Mary solo better than with the band , but still prefer the FR arrangement. Doug's guitar on Truth # 2 recalled the Chuck Berry line from Johnny B. Goode , " he could play a guitar just like a - ringin' a bell ". Almost sounded like a bell here & there. Another big finish for the encore with FR , & my favorite closer again , TOTW. Maybe Patty DOES listen to me sometimes : ) It appears that a lyric controversy has been resolved with TOTW lyrics on ID. I would have put my money on " guide ". I don't have to answer Any of these questions Don't have no God to Teach me no lessons Patty Griffin "Top of the World" Don ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jun 2004 17:16:06 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Liberty Hall / Lawrence , KS 5-21-04 Had an off day in Des Moines , so I found an internet cafe again. Whittled down my E-mail , & was able to respond to Kevin Nobody Bozoski's pretend review in a timely manner. Another nice drive down I-35 , & more great music. So glad I have my music for these long drives. Right after entering the venue , I saw an affectionate female couple holding hands , which immediately threw me into a dilemma ; should I just go watch the show as if nothing happened , or should I try to get in touch with Kevin , so that he could file another special report with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ? In the spirit if self-sacrifice , I decided to attend the show , but keep my eyes open for any more of this non phallo-centric , queer friendly , left leaning behavior. Unfortunately , Patty had me so engrossed that I forgot about it , & I'm sure that depravity raged around me while I focused on the stage. The only thing that came to mind when it ended was perfect. That sense stayed with me , ironically , until Perfect White Girls. A fun song , but lacking the import of most of Patty's music since the heart of the lyrical composition was removed. Don't know if they thought the regular set was over , but the audience gave Patty her first standing ovation between songs , after Mil Besos. Great encore set again , with Mad Mission getting a big response when it was recognized. Thought of making a night of it , but had to drive , so I headed back. Got up to my hotel , & discovered that the nondescript building next door had morphed into the neon-lit Moon Bar. Surely , Patty was in there , singing The Moon Song ! Not to be. Went in & found an Oriental motif , with close to 50 % of the staff & patrons being Oriental.Had many pool tables , & a number of private Karaoke rooms. Of course my mind went straight to our American hero , Kevin Nobody Bozoski. Blacks , whites & Orientals all mixing about & touching , & who knows what goes on in those "private" Karaoke rooms ! They even had a drink called " finger me good " ! ( got a free one , Crown Royale & butterscotch schnapps- very tasty ) God save our country from the pits of immorality in these college towns ! Didn't talk very much , but enjoyed the ambience , & the music. Mostly hip-hop / rap , & smoother , jazzier versions of Britney / Christina type music. Off we go , one more show If you kiss their asses long enough They might let you kiss their asses Patty Griffin "Perfect White Girls" Don ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jun 2004 23:12:06 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Cain's / Tulsa 5-22-04 Long drive to Tulsa on secondary roads , but plenty of great music. Those 2-lane 65 mph roads with passing allowed , flashed me back to a few close calls I had in my youth. Speed & distance judgment is very different when closing speeds are 130 - 140 mph. Even when there's no car in sight on the other side of the road , it's hard to tell if there's enough distance to complete a pass. I was VERY careful. Set list : Standing Love Throw a Line Making Pies Chief Blue Sky Icicles Mother of God / piano Poor Man's House / solo Long Ride Home Be Careful / Doug / Michael R. Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls Truth # 2 Mil Besos When it Don't Come Easy Encore Let Him Fly Sweet Lorraine Top of the World For some reason , I noticed Patty's vocals on LTAL more than other times. It is a good vehicle for her voice , as she runs the gamut from sultry to soaring , but I guess the single didn't go anywhere , or we would have heard by now. My choice for a single was Useless Desires , but who knows ? Had a dream during the midwest swing where Don't Come Easy was a big hit single. Seeing as how nothing can please me & my red shoes , my 1st thought in the dream was that if DCE could be a big hit , so could Ruby's Arms , & ID could be going platinum if RA was on it too : ) Absence of Cold as it Gets , & the Kite Song made the set suffer in comparison to others , but it was still a great show , & Don't Come Easy & Top of the World sent me home happy : ) Craig got his biggest response of the tour when he finished his set at Cain's , so maybe he went home happy , too. My Main Man Murph , thoughtful & generous as usual ; ), gave me Craig's CD at Birchmere , but I left it at home , & didn't get to listen till I got back from Tulsa. Popped it in the car , & didn't expect much , but got surprised one night while I was driving dark , secondary roads back home. He does weave quite a spell on a few of his songs , & Lisa Germano jumped out at me on another , with a whispery passion reminiscent of Fiona's version of Across the Universe. 3 days till I'm on the road again.
