Figured out the subway well enough to go to Ground Zero & back , then met up with Kim again , & had a bite & a drink at an Irish Pub before the show. On our way thru Grand Central Station , I heard her say the word kite , & turned to see a rainbow-colored kite in a window. Don't know if she had already decided to get it , but if she didn't . I sold her on it. I was sure Patty would like it , & pronounced the idea a brainstorm. We huddled in the pub , & decided it would be best to put it together at the show , & give it to her assembled.Set list : Standing Love Throw a Line Rain Chief Blue Sky Kite Song / piano / solo Mother of God / piano / Doug Cold as it Gets Be Careful Rowing Song Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls When it Don't Come Easy Top of the World Truth # 2 Icicles Encore Mary Mil Besos Patty's voice sounded a little rough at times. In some places I liked it. Think she had a radio show that day , which would be 3 appearances in 26 hours. Had problems with Be Careful again , forgetting the words & starting over , then losing them again , + a tuning problem. Be Careful , Patty ! Haven't been exposed to so much new Patty music since I got LWG & FR at the same time , & first started going to her concerts. Probably explains why the new ones are always at the top of my favs for every show. Don't Come Easy was the best yet. Very intense , & obvious that she was pouring herself into it , b/c her body was undulating as she sang. Not into classical music much , but was taken by Beethoven's " Fur Elise " when I heard one of those TV ads for a classical CD. Patty's piano on Kite & the ending of MOG has the same effect on me. While she may not be the greatest technician , she gets into the feel of the songs , & the timing , volume & pitch just strike me as perfect. Dana took the kite up before the last encore song , & found an empty seat in front. When Patty finished , she picked it up , along with her other gifts , threw it over her shoulder , & trotted off with just enough breeze to fill it out. We were hoping to see it again at other shows , but no luck. I thought it would look great on the piano , but Patty NEVER listens to me : ) You never get what you want And I don't think it's my fault Patty Griffin " You Never Get What You Want " Don ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jun 2004 08:01:17 -0400 From: sharon G Subject: MM: birchemere Thanks to Roy.... i got a copy of the birchmere show... i am offering it up to digest members or those who are without a burner who cannot reweed this... There were "scheduling conflicts" so they cancelled the session. :-( The note on the door at Starbucks said something about the 21st (which is when she's playing the Moore), so keep your eyes open for announcements about another session around then. I was surprised she was coming to town just for this session, so I wasn't shocked that it didn't happen.
