Oops ! 4 hour drive. One hour to get on the GW bridge. Curses ! Nothing to distract me but cigarettes & coca- cola. Just to keep you interested , some young girl pulled down my pants in a bar later in the evening. More on that later : ) Arrived in Glenside to a torrential rain that must have played havoc with the pre-show kite flying. Met Mayor Karla in the famous Keswick Tavern where she holds court. Joined in time by Evil & wife , " I had dinner with Patty " Murph , & some % of his family ( 6 kids ! ) , Cathy , & Karla friends Bobbi & Raoul. The Otts were there at another table , & discovered that they lived within a mile of Karla. Small Patty world ! Big thanks to Karla for great seats at the show. Set list : Standing Love Throw a Line Rain Chief Blue Sky Kite Song / piano / solo Mother of God / piano / Doug ? Cold as it Gets / JD ? Rowing Song / Michael Ramos ? Useless Desires Go Now PWG When it Don't Come Easy Truth # 2 Top of the World Icicles Encore Making Pies Mil Besos Mary Have 4 songs marked off as if they were solo , but pretty sure that the names with ??'s usually play on them. Background vocals in Standing seemed deeper than usual to good effect. Patty did some excellent little scat to close LTAL. She also does light-hearted scat in the middle of Go Now every night , with Michael Ramos playing off it on the accordion. she always seems to have fun with that part. Again , the live ID songs keep growing on me rapidly , intense from Kite Song to UD. Go Now tops off that run nicely. PWG lets down just long enough for me to collect myself for When it Don't Come Easy. Been knocking me out every night. Very subdued background vocals help it out , & like Ruby's Arms , the band is up to Patty's standards. Subdued & supportive except for one part where strident music is called for , & they deliver. Have solo with a star next to it on TOTW. I'm assuming that's Doug. Don't know if it was the case here , but he & drummer Michael played off each other on a few of these. Still think it's a great song to close a show with. With Patty's great vocals , then the fading encore closing it out. Icicles closed out my favorites , with the encore seeming anti-climatic after the new songs. Band Doug Lancio - Lead Guitar Michael Ramos ( rrrrramos ) - Trumpet / Accordion Piano / Keyboard JD Foster - Bass Guitar Craig Ross - Baritone Guitar Michael ( Longoria ? ) - Percussion Headed out to the Plush Bar after the show with Karla , Bobbi & Raoul. Murph's kids weren't allowed in , so they had to call it a night. A group of young girls asked me to take their pic. I did so , then felt someone tugging at my pants leg. My jeans had bunched up at the top of my boots , & she was pulling them back down : ) Said my Flamers " rocked ". No , I didn't get lucky : ( Had my limit of 2 drinks , as I guess everyone did , & headed out back to New Haven. Night , you know how I forget It's only hours till the day So hard to remember that It's hard to see a night that way Patty Griffin "Night" Don ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jun 2004 03:06:58 +0000 From: Danalee7@comcast.net Subject: MM: The Berry Home safe from Strawberry- just awesome 4 days- even in spite of a 6 hr rain Thurs nite that soaked our sleeping bags and all. Sat & Sun were beautiful- and I did not get invited to the KFOG Patty concert thankfully as I would have felt terrible if I came home and found that option had been on my e-mail. It was pretty bluegrassy which is not my style- no groups really jumped out at me, I did like Allison Moorer tho, and Beolach- exc- and The Mavericks who closed the Sun nite concert under the stars. They did great covers, even Wimoweh- lead singer guy has really great voice and he sang so many oldies- so fun. I managed to stay up after mainstage closed a couple of the nights and wandered around to a few jams at people's campsites. Thurs nite I walked into a great old time- they were passing the jug and pipe around among the players and playing Jambalaya, White Lightnin' and maybe 20 rounds of This is Gonna Be the Last Time. Fiddle, Cello, guitars - they each take a turn at solos- so many folks in the audience could be mainstage acts- half the audience plays and sings there. I actually picked up a guitar and played along for as long as my callusless fingers would let me at one circle- they were very patient and absolutely encouraging. I really have not played since I was 21 but of course you never forget the chords, even tho my memory is a blank slate for any of the songs I used to know. Makes me want to get my old guitar fixed and pick it up again so I could really play along at the next Strawberry over Labor Day weekend. That particular circle would let me join in- so fun. Now, could I learn a Patty song to share? Nah- my voice falls far short for anything Patty. Have to find something more neutral I guess. We'll see. I totally encourage any of you to find a festival near you and forget your life for a few days, spend a few days outside , make new friends and go. Bring the kids. They have a blast. Falconridge in NY, Newport Folk in RI- Kerrville in TX? whatever- they are all over. Kate Wolf is end o! f June h ere in CA- next one for me. It doesn't really matter what the lineup is- of course it is wonderful if fave singers play, but as in this one for me, I really knew only 1 act who played but it is the whole experience that matters. It seems like no one understands unless they have been- most people I know would not consider doing this, camping on the ground with 5000 strangers, but I am addicted now. :) Well, work looms in am, and I got little sleep for the past few days, so, nite. Dana back in Antioch- darn. In my real life again. YA, Don, and you quoted my fave of all Patty songs, "Shells" that I wish so hard that she would record so that everyone could know it. What an awesome antiwar video this song could make. It is an important song. I call it a Major song. The blood of these lambs speaks of the darkness And the blood of these lambs speaks of the rage Yes , the blood of these lambs is rolling to the sea It's writing your history on every single page Patty Griffin "Shells" ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V8 #139 *********************************
