[Sarah Morgan Subject: MM: Milwaukee Show Hi all, Had an amazing, amazing, amazing night last night in Milwaukee. Brought along a friend who didn't know Patty and she's of course now hooked. Just an incredible performance in front of a wild, raucous audience, which Patty said she'd expected after her last concert here (with Chapin, Shawn, Dar) but she also commented that we were not her usual Monday night gig, but she wished she had an audience like this every Monday and seemed genuinely thrilled to be playing in the absolutely gorgeous Pabst Theater, talking at length about it and how much she'd looked forward to returning to this particular venue. Had third row seats and was only feet away from my hero. Left her flowers and a note by her feet, which she noticed immediately. Set list was approx. the same with a few variations--she put Icicles very early in the set instead of as the closer. She did Different Drum acoustic and Take It With Me which was surreally amazing. She talked about the kites and told the great story about how the song was written--she and a friend had been walking around and happened upon a kite festival and had been having a depressing and dark conversation about war, and her friend said "Wouldn't it be great if we all had kites instead of weapons and bombs" and that she'd written the song for her. She said it's unlikely, but perhaps it's a possibility someday. She also mentioned she'd almost called "Cold As It Gets" the Nazi Hunter song after it was inspired by a POW movie. She did all from ID except rowing song, florida and mother of god. She also did flaming red, blue sky, perfect white girls, chief, mil besos and making pies and surely others I'm forgetting. I'll count on someone else for the set list. All I can say is I totally agree with everyone that Patty seems to be having a great time this time around. She seems so much happier and at ease. She brought the entire audience to tears, laughter, dancing, every emotion that a person could feel. I think Patty Griffin is the only singer or writer I've ever known who can just touch so many people so effortlessly. She's just her amazing, wonderful self and that hits everyone in the audience so movingly. She's my hero not only for her music, but also her grace and her ability and courage to stand up for the causes she believes in, the way she conducts herself and of course that VOICE. I've been to a ton of concerts in my life--this was by far the greatest. Thanks, Patty. Perfect night. And how cute was the dancing? Zach __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? It comes with a compilation cd which includes Love Throws A Line plus 22 other singer/songwriters (Sondre Lerche, Jem, Sarah Harmer, Norah Jones, Edie Brickell and Peter Mulvey to name a few.) There is a beautiful 6 page article on Patty as well. Well worth the $5.95. I bought my copy at Borders Books and music, so I am sure can get it anywhere muisc is sold. Enjoy! She looked so radiant in her white paisley sheath dress that was lined with a red ribbon - which matched her perfect red velvet pumps. These were the same shoes she wore on Saturday at her show in Chicago....must be a good luck charm or something. Although she sure doesn't need it - she was so intense, yet so calm. I was really amazed at her performance -- each song was carefully designed with thoughts and emotions - so real-- as if it were the first time they were sung. I was so proud sitting there in the third row with my friend who was new to Patty --- and feeling every single word that she was singing in my bones. I think I was actually sitting right next to Zach - I was the one that threw Patty a bag of M&Ms...and she smiled at me and gave me a thumbs up....and then just kept playing. I think that is what I love so much about her - she is so relaxed and has such poise on stage. I definitely enjoyed my first show at the Pabst Theatre - here is the set list: Standing Love Throws a Line Making Pies Chief Blue Sky Icicles Different Drum- Linda Ronstadt cover Cold As It Gets The Kite Song Take it With Me As I Go - Tom Waits cover Useless Desires Go Now Perfect White Girls Truth #2 Mil Besos It Don't Come Easy Encores: Flaming Red Top of the World I would say that this show was just as equally good as the Chicago show - although the Chicago show was sold out and they were dancing in the aisles..pretty crazy. But this time around I really enjoyed her enthusiasm on a Monday night and she looked so damn cute on stage. I too have had my share of artists and concerts - and these have been the best concerts I've been to. As I remember her voice singing so sweetly - I get chills down my arms and love in my heart. Looking forward to the next time I get to see her. thanks Patty. And of course my "old pals" Becca and Maureen. My mom, Tricia and I had fun talking to everyone and we had a great time at the show. It was my mom's first Patty show and probably not her last! Hi everyone, This is my *very first* MM post, Ive been here awhile (2 yrs), and post much on the pattygriffin.net board, but havent gotten around to emailing here yet. About the Patty tix and how theyre being sold on this tour, I also have a complaint. I just bought tix to the upcoming Santa Fe show, since its the closest one to me at a 4 hr drive! Anyways, the tix went on sale one morning at 10AM, so I did the internet buy at 10AM and got 7th row smack in the center. (good seats right?) Well, two days later I noticed that music today was selling the best seats in the house. SO, I sign up to get these tix too (figuring I can give they 7th row seats away to a friend). I get front row, the two seats at the end of the center section.great seats. Well, cause I was bored at work 3 hrs later I decide to check what seats are on sale. Front row smack in the center! Damn.I buy the seats early, and DONT get the very best seats EVEN THOUGH they are available. Damn it. SO, I email the music today folks, asking if I can change to these better seats, but hey two days and no response. I think I sound like a whiner here, since I do have great seats already, but for me its the principle of it. If I was the first buyer, shouldnt I have gotten the BEST seats, not the ones slightly to the right of the best seats? All I know is that those schmucks at music today better respond to my email! Anyways, hey I cant really complain. I am so so so so so so excited about the show I wish it was tomorrow! I love the MM list, and read all the emails, and feel a little sheepish about this being my first.but I will definitely be posting a Santa Fe review! Is anyone else here going to Santa Fe? Id love to meet Patty lovers like myself! Cheers, Sarah (Morgan) (used to be in England, now in New Mexico). And that was the problem. Patty Griffin Photo/Mary Jo Walicki Patty Griffin performs Monday night at the Pabst Theater. She was in excellent voice. Griffin started off the evening with a captivating blues called "Standing" from her new album, the well-named "Impossible Dream." Along with her five-piece band, she raised the song's temperature ever so gradually until it boiled over in a sour, atonal wash of sound: a captivating example of how great the singer-songwriter genre can be. Griffin was in excellent voice. She packed a gospel wail in a ballerina's frame, used to thrilling effect on covers of the Stone Poneys' "Different Drum" and Tom Waits' "Take It With Me." The whole evening was like a dream of a socialist paradise where everyone listened to National Public Radio and played acoustic guitars and didn't bat an eye when some of the many lesbian couples openly displayed affection. Even one of Griffin's guitarists took the least phallo-centric, showboating solo of all-time. Warm, queer-friendly, left-leaning, respectful - what could possibly be wrong with this? But where were the irreverence, the (good) jokes, the gospel messiness? And, most damningly, where was the confidence, in both performer and audience? After applause, there was often complete silence. Griffin, understandably uncomfortable at one point, told the audience they were so polite as if to give them a license to yell out now and then. But when - after one of her precious song introductions - a loudmouth screamed, "It's a great song, Patty!", she sheepishly thanked him and went into the song rather ruffled. Griffin began her Waits cover in Waits' froggy voice. But when both she and the audience laughed, she immediately reverted back to her own voice after the first line. It seemed a mistake rather than a parody or pastiche. Worst of all was her identification of the four white bird-like things floating above the stage as kites. A friend had once said to her "Wouldn't it be better if instead of killing people flew kites?"; that moved her to write "Kite Song." After performing it, though, she threw up her hands as if to say, "Well, that was it. You can applaud now." In the end, the show was a testament to the idea that a ground-standing confidence is necessary to achieve and maintain any kind of paradise.
