So far it has been an incredible trip with all my connections working out - the 4 Patty concerts were just awesome- I don't know if I can really review all four of them now. Hopefully Don will when he gets a chance. Don was so sweet to me - drove me around even putting up with my Adora for a lot of the driving- very patient guy there. He has met my 2 daughters as well now and since the Cd player was on the fritz for 3 of the drives, he probably knows more about me than he ever wanted to for lack of music to listen to- :)-fortunately for him- he got it replaced before the drive to Alexandria. :) Here are a few fragments of the long weekend. We made it to NYC in time to take a subway down to the World Trade Center site on Friday. Back to Times square for dinner at my now favorite Manhattan restaurant right next to the venue. We met Kim- (Kaycee), and Lance and I also met another girl from the list whose name I still don't have burned into my brain - sorry- but we had a nice chat. We had 2nd row seats= Patty was beautiful as ever in a sleeveless tangerine colored taffeta dress and those flaming red high heeled shoes with her hair permed and flying all over - she cannot look anything but beautiful no matter what she wears anyway- and show was great, missing only Florida from the Impossible Dream cd. I love the show with the band. Blue Sky was a highlight for me as I haven't been listening to Flaming Red for a while and I heard lines I had missed before. Going home found us winging it on gas fumes up on Jerome into desolate destitute areas in the Bronx- looking like tourists with me with a big map in my lap and PA plates on the car- trying to find rte 95= we toured that area unnecessarily for an hr before we found a gas station and our way out of the city. Saturday found us again at Times Square with a few hrs to kill- so we walked all around and now have a primitive idea of the area- we even found bathrooms at Grand Central Station. We found a rainbow kite there to give Patty also. We found the Empir! e State Building and backed out of the idea of going up to the top when we saw the line. At least I have seen it from down in the street. Kim met us for dinner at an Irish Pub and then we were treated to another round of Patty and band. Black fishnet stockings and red shoes again. I don't know how she manages to stand and walk around in those things but she does all right. I had put M&M's up on the stage next to the mic with a card before the show and at the encore, I went up from our 6th row seat and laid down the rainbow kite- she flashed me her gorgeous smile and as there was an empty seat right there up front, I just sat down to hear the last encore song. She then scooped up the kite and some flowers and trotted offstage with the kite hanging over her back for all to see. That night I met Sharon Goldberg finally- she was volunteering at the WFUV table and I found her just by accident. I love to meet list members in person even if only briefly- a face to a name means a lot. Sunday I managed to meet more list members thanks to John Higgins who arranged dinner at a really good Thai restaurant across from the Berklee Performance Center in Boston. My daughter Jayne and Adora came that day. I met the 2 Maureens, John, Gillian, Elise, Christina, Johnny Guitar:), Sarah, Becca, Denise and several others whose names I don't have coming to me right now. Adora drew a picture for Patty in the book Sarah passed around for us to sign and Jayne did a little collage which I didn't get to see. We all found plenty to chat about over dinner and it was a great way to go to a Patty concert- maybe that was why I felt just exhilarated for that concert- more than most for sure. Thanks John for putting it together. Before the concert I even managed to find Mike Burns due to John's seating chart- and Mike, I am still worried about you but you did seem to come thru seeing Patty live for the first time ok and I think some of your comments this past week are right on too. Somehow I missed finding John Bernhard and I am so disapppoin! ted, Joh n, not to say hi to you- maybe there will be a next time. Patty was just beautiful in jeans, those red shoes, and an ivory sleeveless top with the skirt of a gown or whatever it was tied around her waist and hanging like some kind of fairy outfit or something- I cannot even explain it right- but she looked great. Jayne says that is in style right now. Jayne would know. I was most focused on this concert of the 4 of them- I loved it. Afterwards, I told Patty's parents that they did a good job and that I was glad they were able to be there. I often think about what her family would think about how far she has come and here a bunch of them were there on Mother's Day too. I loved the Burgandy Shoes song- it brought a tear in my eyes and lump in my throat- can't help it - I am a mother too. Pretty cool to hear it the very first time she performed it and for her mother as well. I felt like this was one of the best Patty concerts I have been to - of about 25- perhaps it was mostly my own mood as I always think she did good. We put M&M's onstage again this show also- just to let Patty know us M&Mers were there supporting her. Don and I made a little pilgrimage to the Keswick on Mon eve and met another lister and concert buddy of Don's, Karla, across the street at a pub there for a chat and all. At least I saw the outside of the Keswick and know where Glenside is now. Tuesday found us in Alexandria at the awesome Birchmere- another venue I never thought I would see. It is so cool- maybe the coolest venue I have been to yet with the murals and table seating and a good menu. Thanks to Murph, we had seats right center front- Don and Dave, Bev and Nancy- who came to the rescue with the M&M's- thanks Nancy , Murph and me. Missing unfortunately Linsley who I later heard was there and I did not get to meet! Patty did Tom Waits' Take It With Me on piano for encore- I never thought I would hear that live so that was special- she also did Florida- the first time that I heard it live I think. I found Patty's poster on ! the wall among many others. Afterwards, Murph brought me backstage to meet Patty!Totally unexpected- got to chat for a few minutes- I had Adora on my hip so even Adora got to meet Patty. Patty presented the check to the No Landmines Vets and also thanked and introduced Murph to the audience at this show also. Don turned back to PA for the Pittsbugh show which was tonite and he has a few more as well this week to make. Today I rented a car and did the drive to Charlotte, listening to Emmy Lou's Red Dirt Girl, also Wrecking Ball, and Linda Thompson- A History of, a little Clannad, a little Maire Brennan, once thru for Craig Ross, and then pulled into Charlotte listening to Ferron who I just love- she is so mellow and soothing and by that time I really needed mellow and soothing too--- and will be visiting my brother for a few days and then my sister this weekend in Reading and then after a couple of days in New Haven with my daughter Jayne, will head back to CA where home and work await. Also Teddy Bear, my little white Shi Tsu. No matter what, your dog always loves you- no matter who else gets sick of you, the dog stays faithful. So much for the news at Lake Wobegon. Enjoy the rest of the tour you all and safe travels too. Dana in Charlotte:) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 May 2004 09:57:37 -0400 From: "Dennis Flynn" Subject: RE: MM: No Profanity Here I Swear I don't want Mike to stop his rants either. I personally enjoyed his PG review. :) Believe it or not, I dislike censorship as much as the next free-thinking person. I am not restricting their right to free speech or trying to prosecute them. I am merely exercising my own. I just wanted to thank Sarah Martin for sharing her Patty meeting with all of us. As one of the Mad Missioners at the Boston pre-show dinner, it was great to finally put a face to some of the names on the list. I was wondering/hoping if Sarah would share this once in a lifetime event with us and I was not disappointed when I read her story. What a great night for everyone and how nice to be able to share in the happenings after the show. I guess it would be a little weird to meet Patty and start grilling her on the meanings of songs, her inspirations, musical influences, etc. I mean, I'd love to know those answers, but at the same time just to talk to Patty like a regular human being about laundry, shoes, anything really, would be amazing. Thank you Sarah for giving us a glimpse of your special night and in essence, a glimpse of the real woman behind the Voice. THE Patty. I for one truly appreciate it. This time it's Patty's own "When it Don't Come Easy". When asked about my favorite from ID , I instinctively went for Don't Come Easy , but recalled that I wore out my copy of "Standing" when I got the Silver Bell promo , so I went for that one. The live versions are a different story. I think it would be hard to duplicate the consistent timing & vocals that are on the studio version , & Patty made a wise choice to purchase it. The live versions are great , but don't capture the dirge-like sound that the studio one has. "Don't Come Easy" has been knocking me out at every performance. Last time I had to thank Patty & Tom Waits for "Ruby's Arms" , but this time it's all Patty. Composition , lyrics , & performance are all at the top of the scale. Best of all , it's on ID , so we'll all get to hear it at the concerts , & I'll probably get to hear it another 5-10 times. Thanks again for reminding us , Patty. If you forget my love I'll try to remind you Patty Griffin "when it Don't Come Easy" Don ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 May 2004 09:51:49 -0700 (PDT) From: sarah martin Subject: Re: MM: Thank you Sarah!!
