Her soaring, unconventional vocal style is a mix of pop, folk and alt-country: Emmylou Harris filtered through Lucinda Williams. Emotional and social turmoil are the subjects of this new batch of songs. The rhythms of Sister Rosetta Tharpe are echoed in "Love Throws a Line." The Staple Singers' early gospel style is evoked on "Standing." "Cold As It Gets" is a dark, plaintive anthem laced with the strains of old-time mountian music. Through it all, Griffin's gorgeous vocals are the unifying thread, as she swoops and soars like a graceful bird. In the crowded world of singer-songwriters, Griffin remains at the top of the heap with this stirring work. (Gaff), a date featuring him along with a crew dubbed the Bump Band. McLagan holds court on an assortment of keyboards, sometimes providing soulful fills and solos on Hammond B-3, other times displaying some improvisational chops on electric keyboards. But there bs ample attention paid to funk and breezy grooves on such tunes as bDate With An Angel,b bShe Ainbt My Girlb or bBeen A Long Time.b McLagan can turn somber or serious when necessary, and the lyrical slant on bPrice of Loveb or b Wishing Hoping Dreamingb turns away momentarily from the lighter, predominantly celebratory tone dominant on the session to more probing themes and narratives. While McLagan tips his hat to his old boss at times in his vocal approach, hebs got more than enough of his own sound and style to make Rise and Shine! enjoyable. The guest corps includes glorious singer Patty Griffin on four cuts, most notably bLyingb and bWishing Hoping Dreaming.b While Stewart continues courting the pre-rock and old-timers market, Ian McLagan reminds us of just how jubilant and exciting the Small Faces sounded, and hopefully may spur Stewart into cutting some of that music again in the future. ======== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 May 2004 19:50:06 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: MM: Boston "Find-A-Fan" seating chart! Nice site. I am actually 3 seats away from Christina @ B/103. I am sitting in Orch C, row B, seat 103. Now if only I was sitting 3 seats away from THE Christina. Sorry Christina/103, no offense. I am just "overwhelmed by sadness" myself that: 1) I will NOT be seeing The Passion Of The Christina Aguilera next month LIVE for my first time. 2) Much more importantly the greatest voice on the planet is strained and has to cancel a whole tour -- sounds VERY serious and perhaps career/art/ecstatic joy threatening. Hey, I hope I can see Christina LIVE someday, but my biggest hope is her voice will fully recover so that she and the world will not be deprived of her wondrous talent. Sorry. I just found out the news of Christina's tour cancellation due to vocal chords strained in the studio, only this morning. * I'm a little verklempt * * You Mad Missionaries talk amongst yourselves * * Topic: Is Patty Griffin a "diva"? * OK. I'll try to keep it together here. Hell, this email may not even get circulated, for as many of you know, I am way too political, and have been previously banned from Mad Mission. For Patty to be getting ever more and more political is good in her music and charity work, but the kids are not alright when they try to share their views w/ each other. Well, at least I am glad I don't have any pictures to circulate of myself showing me torturing any Iraqi's. OOPS! How did that incendiary unpatriotic uncalled for statement get in there? Must have been the Evil Mike Burns slipping in. Have to watch that. Stay on topic. I will nonetheless be more than honored to sit near ANY fan of Patty, especially one w/ the same name as of the light of my life. You'll recognize me, Christina, by my Christina gear on, worn in both your honors. And of course, I will be honored to sit in any auditorium, never mind the best concert theater in the world, with not one but 2 goddesses in the room: the one on stage of course, and the Hi-fi Goddess in attendance. And a Christina 3 seats away. And all you other lady Patty fans (including Sarah, and Fool on Fire -- hey, we already have 2 things in common, Elise ;) who will be there as well. I am indeed a blessed man. Now if only Christina gets all well, and Kerry wins, I'll be all right. Have to go pray for the blessed Christina and this cursed country now. PEACE. OUT. Mike Burns has left the building... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 May 2004 20:38:58 EDT From: MikeBrns4U@aol.com Subject: PS Re: MM: Boston "Find-A-Fan" seating chart!
