I especially liked this reviewer's take on the well-known song (thanks to the Dixie Chicks cover) "Top of the World" which Ms. Griffin obviously intended as a lament, rather than a celebration: Again, thanks to the Dixie Chicks version, which I did enjoy because the lyrical content was expressed so brightly or perhaps just exuberantly, which is not a bad thing, but ... As I hear it now, as it was originally written, and through the inimitable voice of Ms. Griffin, the song saddens yet enlightens me It is not a celebration at all, but it is unmistakably Patty at her best. She says so much with her simple words, the genious can be missed, but certainly not denied.. Such an utterly stunning contradiction, yet perfectly understood in a way that changes the mood of the song so subtly from the musical "hit" as interpreted by the Dixie Chicks, into a musical masterpiece our Patty made of it in her version. Out of a blank sheet of paper, she made "Top of the World" a song so special that we suffer for it; so shallow is our attempt to explain what it is that makes us weep in wonderment; her ability to speak in a voice so beautiful and yet so familiar, words fail us. _________________________________________________________________ Test your Travel Quotient and get the chance to win your dream trip! http://travel.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Apr 2004 06:07:14 -0400 From: sharon G Subject: MM: new york city harmony tickets The summerstage city parks shows were advertised in the village voice yesterday...Patty was not included in the line up for central park...There was a note that said "guests to be added" I am biting that with her own shows at Town Hall being around the corner, she could not compete with herself... ive seen that done lot ....after the town hall shows, patty will be included in the show... It is interesting how certain songs hit people in different ways. I know when I first heard "Rain" on 1000 Kisses, I was immediately mesmerized. I heard it at a listening booth at Tower Records but opted not to buy the CD at the time. That song haunted me for a week and I kicked myself for not buying it at that time. When I bought Living with Ghosts, I listened to that one CD alone over and over and over for about 3 straight weeks. I find myself doing the same with ID. I am appreciating all of the other songs on it more and more. It would be the only CD I am listening to at the moment but I have Susan Tedeschi's Wait No More competing with it. And the video was very well done and very indicative of their "spin" on the song. I have equally enjoyed Patty's versions of the song (well, enjoyed them even more than). I would find it very interesting to know about her thoughts on HER two versions...what she was "going for." And why she changed it up for the new CD. And....what is up with the chanting on the old one. :) Bonnie Lombard wrote: What a great synopsis of Patty's newest CD!
