It was Jennifer Garner, though; check it out at http://www.nytimes.com/2004/04/26/movies/26TWEE.html Then, I saw in the table of contents that there are two reviews inside, one CD by Sam Phillips and the other by Patti [something]. Looked closer, turned out to be Patti Smith. Not quite our Patty. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2004 09:18:51 -0400 From: "Dennis Flynn" Subject: RE: MM: Patty's Waterloo Records in-store canceled Uh oh, I hope she didn't catch it in Philly. >From: Mooodeee@aol.com >To: mad-mission@smoe.org >Subject: MM: Patty's Waterloo Records in-store canceled >Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 23:48:54 EDT > >From Waterloo Record's newsletter: > >"PATTY GRIFFIN IN-STORE CANCELLED > Unfortunately, due to a sever sinus infection, Patty has been forced to >cancel her in-store appearance scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, April 27th. >We >apologize for any inconvenience." > >Mimi in Austin _________________________________________________________________ From must-see cities to the best beaches, plan a getaway with the Spring Travel Guide! http://special.msn.com/local/springtravel.armx ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2004 09:19:56 -0400 From: "Dennis Flynn" Subject: RE: MM: RE: NY Times Monday (no review) Me, too. Only one day late I think. I guess I was one of the lucky first 100 to order cuz I got an extra booklet signed by Patty and sure enough her autograph matches the one on my T-shirt that she kindly autographed last year. (Too bad i can't wear that T-shirt anymore....I don't want to wash away the ink.) Guess i better build a shrine to store this stuff. ha. I am so glad to hear that this offical release has been mixed better than the advanced copy I had, which is what I had expected anyway. Love this record...looking forward to the tour and hopefully she'll give us a couple rockers on her next album too. I am hoping she announces some more ID tour dates soon. Please come to California Patty. A bunch of us west-coasters will be meeting for the Saratoga sweet harmony tour, but I still hope for some ID tour dates out here. - -SteveD _________________________________________________________________ From must-see cities to the best beaches, plan a getaway with the Spring Travel Guide! http://special.msn.com/local/springtravel.armx ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2004 13:07:12 EDT From: JLHARTMAIL@aol.com Subject: MM: chords to 'Mad Mission' Does anyone know the guitar chords to the song "Mad Mission"? I'm having trouble with the tabs in the archives and could use a little help, like what key is it in and maybe a line or two of the lyrics with the chords to help get me started. I want to share this song with my acoustic guitar group soon. I haven't picked up my guitar in ages, otherwise I would try and figure out the chords myself...but I think if I had the chords in front of me, that would give me reason to start playing again. Is there anybody who knows how to play them that would be willing to post the chords to these songs for me. I have already checked pattygriffin.net. Thanks! My faves are; Useless Desires and When It Don't Come Easy I too hope that the unreleased songs she recorded for this album come out somewhere, somehow... I also agree that I would have enjoyed this CD more (not that I don't love it) overall if I hadn't been so familiar with a few of the songs already. Danalee7@comcast.net wrote: A lot of times with new Cds all of a sudden I finally hear a song after a few or maybe a bunch of listens. It is a rare song that captures me first listen. Not Alone was one of those rare songs for me. Chills first time around hearing it in the dark at midnite. Mary was another one. Shells was another one. Top of the World too back when she did it on ACL. 2-3 listens and I was into Useless Desires and then it had to be on repeat. Next, When It Don't Come Easy got me- that song is just beautifully done. Florida and Top of the World are great, but I already went thru my honeymoon period with them a while back. :) These are beautiful versions tho. Standing is not my fave PG song as this style of gospel is not my fave music, even of Christian music, which in my past life I have spent many an hour singing and I still love the old songs altho I am not into church anymore, and yet the words are really just so humble and beautiful- she does it great. I think she would fit right in ! in some gospel singing church and they would all be clapping and calling her sister. She nails it. I got into Icicles anyway last summer /fall when we heard it in concert and I have it on live shows. I do agree that if I had never heard these songs before- Standing, Icicles, Florida, Top of the World, Mother Of God, this collection would seem more super duper to me now, but each of those songs had me captured anyway previously. Even Standing. I am glad she included that one too as it really shows another facet of her gift. I am least into Love Throws a Line as that bluesy style is on my unfave style list altho I recognize the lyrics as important. I wish they were promoting Useless Desires or When It Don't Come Easy , or Florida on the radio instead. Maybe in these difficult times in the world, Love Throws a Line is most appropriate tho. Rowing and Kites are also good, but I would not say I am captured yet. I guess I zeroed in on Useless Desires and When It Don't Come Easy a! nd As Cold As It Gets. It is not just the music, it is the lyr! ics that make them stand out to me and it takes a few times around to hear them. This weekend I was going thru this routine with a Richard Shindell Cd I had gotten a year or two ago but never listened much to- Reunion Hill. The songs are popping out to me now altho first listen I was unimpressed. I know a couple of the songs from live boots -like Reunion Hill - which is just an incredible song, a chiller- also Next Best Western. I am hearing the harmonies now of the new songs to me, recognizing the piano background, bazookie - one song just jumped out at me tonite- I Saw My Youth Today- . I love it when that happens and there are a couple more songs on there I am interested in now after 3-4 times thru the Cd. These artists don't write simple songs- I think it is ok if it is not instantanous to get the songs. Now that I am driving 35 mi to work each way, I will have a lot more time to explore a lot of Cds I have not really gone thru well enough and I have a load of those too. I have been so tuned into Patty and Jackson Browne for years. I need to get ! Eliza Gilkyson's new Cd still. Dana- don't worry- I will be very quiet for the next 3 weeks. I agree that having already-heard songs included in a new album usually reduces the enjoyment of that album, at least for me. But in this case, the classic nature of TOTW and Florida and the new arrangement for Mother of God mitigate this impact. ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V8 #101 *********************************
