[Zachary Scot Johnson Subject: Re: MM: Favorite songs? Mark, I have to agree with you on both the favorite songs on the CD as well as overall perception compared to her other works. I keep playing Useless Desires and It Don't Come Easy over and over. I never heard "Silver Bell" since I don't have a burner and don't think I have anything to trade to get one and I have no idea what "trees" are. But "Living With Ghosts" is flawless, imho. That is not to say I don't love ALOT of her songs on her other studio releases but I can listen to Living with Ghosts without missing a track, I can skip 1 or 2 songs on anything she put out since then. But Impossible Dream does contain several treasures. And Patty is way much better than what passes for talent these days. Everytime i hear it, i'm still discovering something new about it (i'm only at my 5th listen so far.... hardly enough to memorize every note). "love throws a line" is by far my favorite though..... and must have heard it 30 times. My favorite experiences in life are always at conercts... something about being able to move to live music (expecially when pattys doing it). When this song plays, I get a vision of myself at a future show.... Thats the first song she does, and i'm one of the handful getting up, and going OFF. (Hopefully others will join me, Seattle is pretty reserved). That will be such a great moment. okay...now a question. A LONG TIME ago at lilith... patty was on tour with lilith fair, doing the side stage (thats where i was turned on to her....her and "blue sky"). She did 5-7 songs, one of them being a cover song. I cant remember the name of the band or the song, for the life of me.... but I wanna say it was kinda "punkish". Anyone remember? I have recordings of it on cassette..... back home in storage of course. Ok, I don't know why I'm feeling so defensive of Impossible Dream reading this thread, but I am. So, I just want to go on record as saying I loved the album from the *first* play. This is the Patty I love. The one that touches me deep. ID is competing very strongly against LWG as my favorite. Oddly enough, my least favorite is Love Throw a Line which is the first single ATO is putting out. But keep in mind that "least" is a relative term. I like vanilla better than strawberry, but i LOVE ice cream. :o) My favorite changes from Kite Song, to Useless Desires, to Rowing Song, to When It Doesn't Come Easy, to Icicles; unless I have the playing in random mode......... Roy, No need to feel defensive. I would imagine most everyone on this list would be happy if Patty sang the phone book. In her own words, of course. Because insignificant little me thinks LWG is her Gold Standard doesn't mean that I think ID is anything less than fantastic. "Rain", "Carry Me", "and "Useless Desires" (too name a few) are three of my favorite PG songs, none of which appear on LWG. Adding to your ice cream analogy, listening to Patty Griffin is like eating a banana split. Happy listening. It was so much fun to meet Becca (and commute with her) and "M" and John.. Hope to see a bunch of you before the Berklee show. Hey Roy, I am right there with you in that I loved this album from the first listen. This may even be my favorite of all of her albums. I understand that paople may be taken aback by it at first because of, maybe, the subject matter, and the overall down feeling of the album, but this is truley one of her most beautiful collections of songs.....and the way the album flows from one song to the next is wonderful. I have been listening to this CD non-stop since the day I got it, and I still don't want to listen to anything else. Definite favorites are "Kite Song", "Useless Desires", "Top of the World", "Rowing Song" and "When It Don't Come Easy." It's just a spectacular album. Have a great day! The first time I was quite underwhelmed. The second time I was bowled over by the beauty of the songs. This is similar to what happened as I became familiar with "Flaming Red". At first, I didn't "get it" at all. As I listened more and more, though, I began to appreciate the depth and detail of the album. "Flaming Red" has since become my fav. patty record. Favorites on this album at this very early stage: "Standing", "Kite Song", "Useless Desires". The new coda to "Mother of God" is stunning. I see my first Patty concert in a couple of weeks. Can't wait!!! Hey All, I loved this one from the get-go, too, but was familiar with all the songs except Rowing Song. I like the version of TOTW, but can't help wishing she'd put a version more similar to that on "Silver Bell". Oh, well, it's a very striking take on the song and probably suits the feel of it better. I, like many of you, have turned many friends on to Patty and all of them bought the cd, too. Our only collective complaint (if you could call it that) was that Patty's cds always seem to just fly right on by. The time spent listening to them feels like nothing--that hour goes by SO quickly and I think that applies to this cd even more than other ones. My question is, in an interview she talked about recording a lot of different stuff for this cd and she wasn't sure what she'd be able to use to make sure it wasn't too long--are there other new songs she did that we might not get to hear? I worry about songs like "The Long Stairs" which is so beautiful and never gets put on an album, so fewer people hear them. Wasn't she going to put "Truth #2" on this one, too? There must have been other songs she recorded for this set--does anyone know anything else about this? Anyways, love the cd. And amazing packaging.
