(Tuesday) I got a pleasant surprise when I found my cd in the mail today. Whee! Patty has outdone herself this time. I have the damn thing on repeat right now...I can't stop listening to it. The rain is coming down softly outside, but hard enough that I can hear it through the open back door, the candles are flickering, the lights are turned off, and Patty's gut-wrenching, soulful, whisper-to-a-wail voice is breaking my heart. She breaks your heart and then mends it again...unearths and names the pain you didn't even know you had buried in your heart. She's channeling some pretty powerful stuff through her voice. I'm so blown away by this album. I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I am. What was great about it is that April 19 is my birthday! So I got a nice Birthday gift when I got home from work. The album is spectacular despite what some of those reviewers might have said otherwise. The only one criticism I have is that the album starts off bluesy and rocking with "Love Throw a Line" and then never does it again for the entire album. However, this is minor, bcause the songs are among the best she has ever written. I definitely like it better than "1000 Kisses"....and I love that album too! Anyone who is getting it today will not be disapointed! Kevin _________________________________________________________________ Lose those love handles! It looks like ATO is going to put a lot of effort into promoting this album. Thank you ATO. My copy came yesterday but I've only had time to give it a concerted listen this morning. These songs are great. Several of the arrangements are quit different form the SXSW shows I've gotten to hear. Don't Come Easy for example. So it'll probably take a few more listens to get comfortable with Craig Ross's vision of Patty's work, but I'm sure I will. What blew me away before even putting the CD in the player was Tracy's art work. This is by far the most beautiful CD artwork I've ever seen. Great job Traci! You can find it at: http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/reviews/2004-04-19-listen-up_x.htm The text is below Mike Patty Griffin, Impossible Dream (3.5 stars of 4) Ostensibly a folk singer, Patty Griffin has a mesmerizing voice that shows traces of not only Emmylou Harris but also the Staple Singers and, on the single Love Throws a Line, Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She's a phenomenal songwriter, too, and a better-known singer would be wise to cover When it Don't Come Easy, though it's hard to imagine any who could deliver the lines "If you break down, I'll drive out and find you/If you forget my love, I'll try to remind you" with as much understated conviction as Griffin brings. Even with expectations raised unreasonably high by her previous work, Dream more than fulfills them. When her songs worked, the results were extraordinary. When they missed, which wasn't often, Griffin's struggles became a little too obvious. On her latest album, "Impossible Dream" (ATO), however, Griffin pulls it all together - stacking one daring, powerful song on top of another to build her first full-fledged masterpiece. And, to her credit, she accomplishes this by taking chances, not by simply sticking with her already successful alt-country sound, the sound that led the Dixie Chicks to cover two of Griffin's songs on their hit album "Home." Fear not, fans. She doesn't ditch it entirely. She includes her own version of the moving "Top of the World," which the Chicks turned into a hit even after their country radio blacklisting. "Useless Desires" is an alt-country gem, as poetic and potent as Lucinda Williams on a rant, especially as Lisa Germano's violin matches Griffin's soaring vocals. But on "Impossible Dream," Griffin is clearly looking to stretch. "Florida" shows off this ambition, taking the alt-country song's melancholy realization that escaping from your hometown doesn't let you escape from yourself with haunting backing vocals and stark production. The first single, "Love Throws a Line," crosses Bonnie Raitt blues with Southern gospel to encourage Griffin's pleas for people to remember that love has a place in a dangerous world. "Standing" sounds like old-time gospel filtered through Depeche Mode synthesized starkness. All this, though, is just a wind-up for the glorious "Don't Come Easy." The song unfolds like a U2 rocker, though Griffin cuts the testosterone with her plaintive vocals and lovely touches, such as Ian McLagan's spare piano and Michael Ramos' muted trumpet. The lyrics work on both personal and political levels, like much of Griffin's work. "If you break down, I'll drive out and find you," she promises, trying to offer some stability in these uncertain times, even as she has doubts herself. "You're out there walking down a highway and all of the signs got blown away," she sings later with the passion of a lost gospel soul. "Sometimes you wonder if you're walking in the wrong direction." The result is a stunningly beautiful package that may very well be the best song released this year. Griffin says that she named "Impossible Dream" after the song from "The Man of La Mancha" (which her parents sing a snippet of on the album) because it reminded her of "a time when people thought about nobility, when they were trying to be above greed." Returning to that time may indeed be impossible. But given the strength of Griffin's dream, she may soon have an army of Sancho Panzas to back up her Don Quixote. Today I was off work and had no reason to leave my house for once other than I was out of milk and it is official release day for Patty's new Cd- so I stayed home and puttered around unpacking still etc etc! BUTT- tonite I decided I had to do penance for having an angel drop an advance copy on me unsolicited even- :) and go out and find it and support her on this first day of the release. I had thought I would of course just go to Amoeba on Telegraph in Berkeley because I like to support independent music stores- but that is 35 mi away and I still drive there all the time for work and really wanted to skip the drive today- so tonite I went out on a Mad Mission to find it in Antioch. After all- there are 100,000 people in this town and they have every chain store imaginable, expecially fast food places galore. I haven't noticed any music stores yet, but I went out looking. Forget it- don't any of these 100,000 people listen to music ever?? What a missed business opportunity. I found myself back on the thruway- oops, freeway- I am not back home in New England:) and tried Best Buy. Nope, so I complained to a salesperson- " Patty Griffin's new Cd Impossible Dream was released today but you don't have any." She checked the computer and they have 20 on order but they haven't even been shipped yet. So I tried Target- pitiful- not one Patty Griffin Cd at all. Then I saw Circuit City so I gave them a try- not even a section labeled Patty Griffin. So, I complained again to the poor sales guy- he did manage to find me one hidden under someone else's name- so success! $13.99 I came home with it at least altho I am wondering how any of these 100,000 people here in Antioch who presumably have less motivation than me to get it will ever do so. I hope it gets promoted elsewhere better than this. The artwork is lovely- really beautiful- I zapped straight to my fave- Useless Desires. I hope it sells well and is a hit for Patty- and that all the rest of you find it easier than I did. Those of you who have not heard it yet- you are in for a treat.
