Hope everyone who got one, enjoys the gifts. They were donated by Patty, ATO Records, Vector Management, Jen Caputo, and myself. Like many mainstream magazines, People does more to encourage an already celebrity-obsessed culture than to creatively explore those forms of art/entertainment that demand a little intelligence, sensitivity, and reflection on the part of the listener/viewer/reader. In this instance, I will cast my judgment: People is wrong, not Patty, dammit! And don't get me wrong: I'm not advocating blind submission to anything Patty ever creates...only that I give more credence to thoughtful critics/media I respect. Ah well, is bad press better than no press? Time will tell, I suppose. I think that any review that compares Patty with Billie Holiday is a positive review. I've mentioned before in this space , that Billie's "Gloomy Sunday" takes my mood about as deep as music can take it.Those of us who appreciate the full range of human emotions know that greatness often springs from deep , dark places. I'm at a loss to explain the "whine" & "self-pity" remarks. I think that one of the hallmarks of Patty's & Billie's greatness is that they can express such deep sadness/despair w/o a hint of whiny self-pity. His malicious swipe at Patty's parents shows the kind of negativity that a lot of 2nd rate reviewers feel is necessary in order to be taken seriously. Frankly , I've heard this cut , & thought that Patty's mother was Patty. Of course , Patty is an amateur too , as was Billie , & time will show them both to have blown away all the classically- trained "experts" : ) Ralph & his "People" constituency can take heart , though , that there will always be a "lite music" station that caters to their tastes. To move with grandeur , one must dream And dreams are nursed in darkness... Unknown Don "Patty Griffin's latest effort should come with a Prozac prescription. I so agree with Donn that to be mentioned in the same breath with Billie Holiday should be nothing short of a HUGE compliment. However, the overall feel of this particular review was far from highlighting the good points of a dark, depressing body of music. We can probably all agree that some of the most beautiful, passionate music comes from the depths of depression and that without these emotions we would not have such amazing, powerful music. I also want to say that there are times when this is the type of music it takes to lift us from deep emotional trauma and depression. you go patty.... sheryl ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2004 02:09:16 +0000 From: danalee7@comcast.net Subject: Re: Fw: MM: People Magazine Who cares what this guy thinks- he obviously doesn't get it- is his opinion more valid than anyone else's, especially Patty's? These particular songs are all awesome and beautifully and perfectly done too and does he understand Top of the World at all? He thinks that one is a relief from somberness? I don't hear self pity at all in these songs. Maybe acknowledgement about the way it is for the person involved. OK, they are not cheery- but they are about important subjects and emotions and the way life can really be for some people- unfortunately is for many people in fact. Patty doesn't have many cheery songs anyway- either does Dar, Shawn, Eliza, Jackson or most of the other singersongwriters I love. Too bad for Patty to get any negative press. I love this Cd. I think it is her best one yet and I love them all. Best song on this collection for me? Tie between Florida, Top of the World, Useless Desires, Cold As It Gets, It Don't come Easy.
