Britt lists artists for 2004 season By BILL VARBLE Mail Tribune Lyle Lovett, Michael Bolton, Jewel, Travis Tritt, Heart and David Byrne will visit the Britt hillside in Jacksonville this summer, along with Natalie Merchant, Lucinda Williams, Burt Bacharach and other stars. The Britt Festivals season, announced Wednesday, begins June 11 with a show by singer Angelique Kidjo and wraps up Sept. 12 with singer Olivia Newton-John. Sales to Britt members run March 22 through May 9, when they are made available based on members contribution levels. Tickets go on sale to the public May 10. The 36-concert season not counting the classical component, which was announced earlier is a mix of pop, rock, country, swing, bluegrass, funk, dance and world music. Ticket prices are up, with about half the acts at or above the $50 mark for premium reserved seats. Michael Bolton boasts the priciest ducats at $71. There are still some bargains, such as lawn seats for Steve Earle and for the David Parsons Dance Company at $19. Lawn seats generally run $21 to $39. A number of artists are Rogue Valley favorites, like Lovett, Huey Lewis, Bruce Hornsby, Kenny Loggins, Merchant, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Indigo Girls and Emmylou Harris. Others, like Bacharach, Kenny G and Garrison Keillor, need no introduction. Some, such as Kidjo, are less widely known. Kidjo mixes the tribal and pop rhythms of her West African heritage with funk, salsa, jazz, rumba and more. Lovett teams up this time out with singer-songwriter extraordinaire John Hiatt as well as veteran country artists Joe Ely and Guy Clark. Brad Paisley, Delbert McClinton and Travis Tritt add a country flavor. The venerable Blues Traveler injects some blues into the season, and The Funk Brothers and Joan Osborne chip in with a show called "Standing in the Shadows of Motown." Pianist Herbie Hancock leads an all-star jazz invasion June 18. Everybody will have his own favorites. Mike Sturgill, who books the artists for Britt, says Earle and Williams are two of his personal choices. The summer dance shows are the highly original Pilobolus and the David Parsons Dance Company in August. Some artists are identified with decades. Eric Burdon and The Animals with the 1960s. Olivia Newton-John and Heart with the 70s. Huey Lewis and the News with the 80s. Merchant with the 90s. Others seem to transcend time and categories, like Bacharach, Hornsby, Harris and Osborne. A pre-season show with rocker David Crosby and his new band, CPR, is slated for April 5 at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater in Medford. In the middle of it all is Britt Classical, the festivals original reason to be, from which everything else sprang. This years eight classical concerts with conductor Peter Bay run July 30 through Aug. 14. Several Britt summer camps are scheduled, including Instrumental Jazz Camp June 14-19, Siskiyou Saxophone Workshop July 26-31 and Chamber Strings Aug. 2-14. These student workshops are sponsored by the Britt Institute and feature instructors from around the nation (call 779-0847 for details). Heres the schedule: June 11 Angelique Kidjo/Hugh Masekela. June 12 Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. June 15 Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Joe Ely and Guy Clark. June 17 Michael Bolton. June 18 Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Wayne Shorter, Brian Blade. June 19 Jewel.
