I get bored if a singer seems to put an agenda or a political topic ahead of music. That said, I do not feel that is true with Patty. I think that if her views hint at political topics, it is more because of an emotion or a overarching concern. So I don't think it is a big concern in her case. My favorite overtly political artist is Steve Earle. I love his political songs, and I think I'd like them even if he were a hard-line conservative instead of aggressively liberal. I like his songs because he is singing from his heart, about what moves him, and he is not trying to preach to or convert me. This holds true: quite a few of Steve's fans are conservative, and though they do not share his political outlook, they love his music. And that's all that matters, really. One final point: don't forget that when she writes songs, Patty often writes from the viewpoint of other people, not just herself. I think that in most cases she is painting a picture, not preaching to the choir. - -- SteveB Steve Berry scberry@yahoo.com http://www.stevencberry.com http://www.bainbridgehouse.com "Life is short, but wide." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 2004 19:13:59 EST From: Oldrancocas@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: the politics of dancing I completely agree with this post. I remember reading a Patty interview where she says most of what she writes comes to her as if it were someone else taking over her senses. However, you can not go through life without an opinion. If its in the context of a song, hey thats great. I just don't like paying money to hear people shove thier political agenda down my throat. Patty has never done this when I've seen her and I've seen her plenty. I frankly expect it from most singers and usually give them space, to a point. I have been know to boo on occation when it goes to far. In fact, I've booed some of my favorites!! LOL! I was sitting in the front row of a chuch in Middlebury Vermont once for a John Gorka show.. I love John Gorka. But he went too far with it between songs, so I booed him. Now I was only three feet away. He looked over smiled and sang a song which pretty much was said what he was preaching about. I applauded loudly at the end of the song and he smiled. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Mar 2004 18:11:50 -0800 (PST) From: Steve Berry Subject: Re: MM: the politics of dancing Exactly. You can't go through life without an opinion, but sometimes it feels like a singer has assumed an opinion because it is expected of him or her, not because it comes from the heart. And I never get that feeling from Patty. And I don't think she'd be playing music if she felt she had to belong to a particular political sect or knee-jerk response. - -- SteveB Oldrancocas@aol.com wrote: I completely agree with this post.
