I've been a fan since I saw him with Patty in Boston. I sub-scribe to his email newsletter but I must have accidentally deleted the last one. Can anyone give me info on his new CD coming out that features Patty? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Becca ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 08:32:57 -0500 From: mkriegman@shadowprojects.com Subject: MM: Re: mad-mission-digest V8 #41 well it's been quiet on the list for a while - now people are at least people talking about something that's good. my .02 cents is that i'm kind of surprised that people are surprised that patty griffin might be "political" most of her stuff has a political context along with an emotional sense of longing, love, etc. let's see she writes songs like tony, making pies, people are donating money to the land mind removal fun for her birthday - that's a zany wacky kind of non political thing, politics and activism is pretty much where she lives. it's like being surprised that steve earle is political, or what's that guy from the sixties...bob dylan? sort of makes you think about the roots of folk music... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 10:03:55 -0500 From: "Kevin Brearey" Subject: MM: Hello... Hi everyone, I know this is far removed from what anyone is talking about right now, but I am new to the list and wanted to introduce myself. I have just recently been introduced to Patty through my fiance' and have since come to purchase all of her officially released albums. Like many of you, I am now excitedly awaiting her new album in a little over a month. One thing, though. I have been looking around on the internet and getting bits of information here and there about her. I know that she has recorded 2 albums that were shelved, and I know that the tracklisting is available for what was to become Silver Bell. I have also seen a number of other songs mentioned other places that I have never heard or heard of. I was wondering if there is any way to obtain copies of these songs, or at least hear them. I would especially like to hear her versions of "Top of the World" and "Truth #2", which were, IMHO, butchered by the Dixie Chicks (Sorry to any DC fans out there....I don't mean to offend.) ANYWAY, thanks for reading. I appreciate the time you took to read the message. Have a great day! We are not absurd nor are we without our flaws. There may be none among us that can separate what we believe to be true about the world we live in without being "political" about it. We can speculate on Patty's "politics" when we listen to any of her songs: "Tony" was mentioned a while back, but all of them say plenty about the woman who wrote them. And without knowing Patty's particular "politics," I could say, with certainty, that she has my vote! Gee, what a most hypocritical statement, April! What are we talking about here? Wasn't it you who condemns artists for expressing their opinions? There you go, twisting around what is being said and then using the magic word "compassion" LOL! Typical right-wing rhetoric! I just decorated my office at work in Chagall! And I love Patty, too. (long-time lurker, first time poster) I also wanted to say I think it's a bit reductive to assume Patty's new "political" song is about Bush. I agree with the person who said April should have been around in the 60s. There are plenty of bad guys and plenty of songs about them, going all the way back to the old Childe ballads and beyond. Think of Dylan's Masters of War: "and I'm stomp on your grave to make sure that you're dead," or words to that effect. Chagall, Dylan, Patty Griffin Thank God for these people. All of the folk artists I listen to mix politics with their music. And when you think of it, most young folk artists today were probably heavily influenced by the music of the 60's. I think I can relate to what April is saying if her beliefs are really more "right wing" than "left wing". I know I felt like puking when I heard this country artist singing this song that pretty much backed up going to war with Iraq because "don't you remember that September day"....or something like that. I flipped the channel and I would never listen to that artist because frankly, his political views just sicken me. Whenever I go to folk concerts and the singer/songwriters like MCC or Dar Williams spout off a bit about politcal matters, I always agree with what they are saying and I never thought about how I would feel if I didn't. I do think it would be a bit of a predicament. We are just talking and this is supposed to be a fun hobby you know- chill. I can be all wrong most of the time. Maybe all of the time. I should have kept quiet about it- I was just so into it- remember, politically speaking, I do live in Berzerkeley and so am influenced by Berzerkeley folks a great deal. What more could you expect? Our primaries are Tues and we are all not happy with a lot of the current state of affairs so naturally, I was thinking in terms of that. Patty may have been somewhere else completely with it. Don't blame her. Changing the subject- my Holy Grail wish- maybe someday, somehow, I will get to hear that first album Patty did that was not released. I adore Living With Ghosts exactly the way it was released, but the two songs we did hear from it are so cool with the band- I NEED to hear the rest. Here is my post, Cheers, Dana in Berzerkeley who should have been more quiet lately Ya- that Silver Bell Cd is just great with an incredible range of style. I f I could just win that elusive LOTTO I swear I would buy the rights to those songs and give them back to Patty so the world could hear them. She is rescuing a couple more on her new CD- Standing and Mother Of God and Top of The World so 4 of them will still see the light of day as she already released Making Pies on 1000 Kisses Cd. Little God and Driving are 2 others that need to come out. I have heard Little God several times live in concert but have never heard that Driving song sung live- it is great. Speaking of her unreleased Cds, it is my Holy Grail Mission to some day hear that first cd that was never released- it had band backup - 2 of the song arrangements are known to us from the early Rarities collection- Let Him Fly and Every Little Bit. The first time I heard them I was driving home late at night thru Hartford after going to Lilith Fair and when those first notes ever came up I almost had to stop the car- it was awesome. Those so familiar solo guitar notes with the band then building up. I would love to hear the rest of those Living With Ghosts arrangements with the band. Wait till her new Cd comes out- April 20- it will be great! Dana in Berkeley- still here, just quiet lately " The only problem I have with the Patty Griffin article is is doesn't mention much about Patty's Silver Bell album (other than the normal "never released" information_. Probably because it was never "officially" released, but with all the copies floating around it seems fair that they should have commented on the songs that have not made it off Silver Bell and onto a later Patty release. They did quote some of the lyrics to Silver Bell (the song), but maybe only because A & M actually released that song on a promo sampler. Maybe it's all legal issues, but I personally think Silver Bell has some wonderfull material, and should be heard. And what better way than by causing people to be curious as to it's content?
