Cheers, Dana ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Nov 2003 21:49:49 -0800 (PST) From: Amy Leonard Subject: MM: Warfield Review Hey All, Ok. I am now well rested, so I shall finally drop a review of the SST Warfield gig. First off, must say OH MY GOD!!! Sheesh, was it a great show!! I am a major fan of all four acts: Chapin and Patty are like tied for my favorite artist of all time with Dar and Shawn coming in just about at the top, and still the show was better than I ever could have expected!! :) So, after a lovely dinner in Chinatown and walking past the zillions of sex shops and triple X theaters that surround the Warfield, I finally made it into the Warfield and to my seats. The first thing I noticed was how extremely pumped the crowd was, which was great because you all seemed ready to burst with excitement and joy for being at the show. It was definitely one the best audiences I've been a part of. Probably, helped that I was sitting right behind the neon rainbow of Chapinheads and next to the flamingos. You, guys have awesome energy by the way. :) If you all are wondering who I am, I was the really loud and annoying girl who "wooed" constantly throughout the show, especially within like the first cord of every Patty song. Sorry, but, dude, I LOVE her!! :) So, the crowd pretty much erupted when the lights dimmed. The ladies all looked lovely. With Dar on the left, Chapin next, Patty, then Shawn on the right. Do they always sit this way, I got the feeling they moved around depending on the show, but I really liked this set up cause it felt like the music flowed well because Chapin and Patty are so the ultimate singers that just blow you away with their performances, then Shawn and Dar lighten the mood and keep you laughing. Anyways, for those that haven't seen the SST the basic premise is pass the hat and once everyone has played that is one round. However, in the interest of keeping this review short. I'll simple give each lady her own paragraph. Chapin kicked off her set with the Johnny Cash song, which was quite excellent. 2nd round was an awesome rendition of "This Shirt"! Oh my gosh I love that song live!! Her voice was just awesome and playing was amazing too. It was pure perfection. 3rd round was "Grand Central station" quite moving song with great imagery, I was also glad she took the time to explain the song. I think that made it much more powerful. 4th round was "Between Here and Gone" great song, and I will bet you $10 that it's the closer on her new album. It just have that "A Place in the World"/"Late for Your Life Feel". Speaking of "Late for Your Life" that was Chapin's last song. Extremely pretty version, really did a nice job of capping off her set. Chapin's set was pure brilliance. The main thing that always impresses me about Chapin is that she can cast a spell on an audience like no one I have seen before. Every time she sang on Saturday you could feel the entire audience lulled into this magical trance where you could practically feel everyone around hanging on her every word. It's just awesome and completely magical. She is truly awesome and I'm just felt blessed that I got to hear her. Speaking of awesome women, Patty Griffin's set was AWESOME!!!(Yes, I know I use this word a lot, but no other word could describe it). Anyways, the only person that could ever follow Chapin and not pale in comparison is Patty. She literally blew me away. Plus, the SF crowd loves Patty and greeted her really strongly as soon as she picked up her guitar, we are, after all, the same group cheered for five straight minutes before she hit the stage last year at the Fillmore. Anyhow, her first song was a cover of the Flaming Lips "Waitin' for Superman"! It was flawless and I have now been singing it for two days straight. Guitar work on it was great and her voice was extraordinary. 2nd round was a great sexy, blusy version of "Flaming Red." Again, great guitar work and man was her voice awesome on that song!! Crowd just exploded with that song. 3rd round was the most amazing version of "Nobody's Crying" I have ever heard. It was perfection! And, it brought down the house. Just WOW!! 4th round was the new song "Icicles Falling", which was another WOW!!! Her playing of this song gets better and better. It's just great. And, she closed her set with "Truth #2", which was a great closer cause it totally got the whole crowd going and allowed all the ladies to do great harmonies. Great great great great great set from Patty!! I love the way Patty can capture an audience. There is no I know that blow away a crowd like Patty. Her power on every song is a thing of sheer wonder!! It is truly an honor to see her play! Plus, her stage banter and presence has really come into its own. She can now easily hold her own and really control an audience, it's wonderful to watch. Moving on to Shawn. Shawn is the ultimate jokester. Her shows are almost always surpassed in comedy then in music, and tonight was no different. Kicked off her night with a Neil Young cover, very nice! 2nd round was "Dead of the Night", which was a nice treat. 3rd round was "Matter of Minutes", which was the highlight of her set for me. Plus, I never knew that that song was about having her kid. Really gave me a new perspective on the song. :) 4th round was "Wichita Skyline." And, finished up with an awesome version of "Heart of Saturday." Very solid set from Shawn. Best part of her show though was the imitations of the other ladies, they were dead on and really made you pay attention to the whole stage. Also, funny were her attempts to rib on Patty which brought her face to face with the wrath of Patty Griffin fans, which, we, predictably, jumped up at the first sign of ribbing to defend Patty's honor. What can I say we are extremely loyal. ;) Thus, the ladies have dubbed Patty's fans "Patty's Platelets" cause we form a protective barrier around her. LoL And on to Dar. Dar was her typical Woody Allenish self on stage constantly telling of her troubles keeping plants alive and her family problems, and was basically all the things that make you love Dar. She was also the only lady that played her hits all night, while the other ladies opted for lesser known material Dar gave us: "Mercy of the Fallen", "Fishing in the Morning" a song I can't remember, the highlight of "Babysitters Here", which was a flawless rendition, and closed with a political bent and "We Learned the Sea". Very Solid set and great comedy as always from Dar. She is one of the few ladies that can always make you laugh. The encores were a given tonight. The crowd was on its feet from the last cords of Dar's song and wasn't sitting down till they got an encore. The first floor people even took up foot stomping to get the ladies back on stage. However, the encores were truly better than anyone has said and better than you could dream. "I Want It That Way" is quite frankly amazingly great and I wish to God they could record it cause I would pay anything to hear it again. Great guitar work by Chapin and Shawn. Chapin really really nails that song and Patty really really hits her high notes perfectly on that song. It is beyond greatness. And, they finished up with a flawless performance of " ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Nov 2003 13:08:21 -0800 From: "Roy Larsen" Subject: MM: The Last Show... Well folks, the SST has come to a close in Portland. Being a very long tour, I was worried there would be nothing left from these weary travelers. But although it was clear by the comments they made on stage that they were ready to put this wonderful tour to bed, I'm happy to report the evening was filled with energy, tears, and some of the best music I've heard in my life. I'm sorry to say that I no longer have the capacity to retain short-tem facts. My memories now are more of concept and impression. And for this reason, I won't be able to supply anything remotely close to a complete set list. In fact, I'm afraid Patty's is the only one I can recite. This is a little sad because the theme for this show was to play the pre-arranged requests of their fellow performs and I wish with all my heart I could tell you who requested what song from whom, but I can't. Perhaps one of the younger list members in attendance.... What I can tell you is that *all* 4 women where outstanding. I have every Patty and Shawn album (that antiquated term may provide some insight for my lack of memory) and I have a record or two of Mary and one of Dar that rarely gets played. Nevertheless, everyone of these fine ladies blew me away with their lyrics, guitar work, and voices. There was a lot of chit-chat between the girls, but I found it all very entertaining and genuine. The bottom line is that my ticket prices easily covered the 22 songs I got to hear last night. Since all were at the top of their form, I will shy away from turning this into a "Star Search" who did best review. But I will say that the acoustics of the Keller Auditorium were tailor made for Patty's voice. There was an absolute bone chilling resonance in the hall when Patty sang Poor Man's House, Top Of The World, and, with the strong harmonies added by the others on Mary, I was afraid structural integrity of the hall was in jeopardy. But I was half way to heaven with paradise waiting already (my apologies to John P.) so feared not. Speaking of harmonies. There were very few songs that did not come with vocal or guitar support from the others and really added to the richness of the show. I'm sorry that those at the head-end of this tour weren't able to experience this. The most endearing moment happened near the end of the show. It was on Shawn's last song (the order was Mary, Patty, Shawn, then Dar). She announced that the her last song was a request from Mary's husband and started into her Talking Heads cover "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)". With the opening line "Home, it's where I want to be, pick me up and turn me round", Mary totally lost it. She had both hands to her face through half the song. A stag hand came out mid-way through with a box of tissues. That brought a laugh and lightened the moment a bit. And it was at that moment that I felt sincere gratitude to MCC for putting these wonderful artist together and the sacrifices they all made to bring their music to such a wide audience. (Los Vegas not withstanding - they mentioned there were 123 tickets sold out of 1,600!!.) I was glad Portland came out to represent with nearly a full house. The last bit that may be news, was the announcement that Dar is pregnant and expecting a baby boy. (No, I can't remember when.) Maybe that was common knowledge, but they made it sound like that was the first announcement. The last bit of minutia is what Patty was wearing (a black sweater over a beautiful lavender shear vintage dress) and Patty's set list: Long Ride Home Poor Man's House Back Water Blues (Bessie Smith cover) Top Of The World Icicles Falling Mary (encore) Roy Portland - The City Of Roses _________________________________________________________________ Save your conversations with Messenger 6.1. I was at the Songwriter's show in Seattle last night and Shawn Colvin was talking about finding a positive pregnancy test in the tour bus bathroom and wanted to know whose it was. She asked the real pregnant person to please stand up and it was Dar! They were talking about how they all knew since the tour started and were just dying to talk about it (the PG test story was made up). I'm guessing they were waiting till she was through the first trimester before making any announcements. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You're gonna dance to jah music, dance, We're gonna dance to jah music, dance, Forget your troubles and dance, Forget your sorrows and dance, Forget your sickness and dance, Forget your weakness and dance. . ." -- Bob Marley - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Save your conversations with Messenger 6.1. Apparently, they knew at the start of the tour, but couldn't say anything. I'd imagine that means Dar is through her first trimester now... any other pre-Seattle reports of the pregnancy? >The last bit of minutia is what Patty was wearing (a black sweater over a >beautiful lavender shear vintage dress) She wore a green tee-shirt over a brown long skirt/pants thing in Seattle. Not exactly my taste, but if Patty likes it, then more power to her. Patty also influenced Shawn's choice of apparel at the Seattle show...a pink skirt and black bodice (?) with a bright blue collar and knee-high black boots. Patty called it "Sir Walter Raleigh meets Tinkerbell". Again, not my taste, but it was fun to laugh with them about it. Patty's set from Seattle included Moses, Makin' Pies, Little God, Perfect White Girls, Tomorrow Night (the definite standout of the evening), and Mary. She was clearly the star of the evening, receiving the biggest applause from the capacity crowd and the most amazing response from the other artists on stage. They were all very complimentary of each other, but Patty seemed to get the most adulation from the rest. And it was well-deserved. They were all fabulous, and while I wasn't completely won over by MCC (the only one whose CDs I don't own), I'm *so* happy she organized this tour.
