If you did not hear from me, you didn't get in. Watch for other people to offer to the list. I did a few more than 5, so there should be offers soon. One clarification: There are actually 2 of Mary Chapin Carpenter's songs with cuts, not one. I forgot to mention a second song on disc 2 where part of the MD surface must have been faulty, because about half of a song is mysteriously not there. The show is still quite listenable, even if it is incomplete. However, if anyone I've already contacted wants to back out because I forgot to mention this, let me know. People create really nice labels that look great but the adhesive can degrade over time and cause a problem down the road. Same thing with writing on the surface. You may be cutting your discs life short by doing this...accent on the MAY part. This technology is still young and no one really knows how long these cd-r's will last. I know someone who burned Maxell Taiwan cd-r's in 1997 and they were unreadable as of Feb 2002. I belive the Taiwan vs Japan issue is more important than the writing thing (ie: the quality of the materials used to manufacture the cd-r has more to do with longevity ) but I prefer to take no chances. I am not trying to send anyone into a mild panic over this, but this info is widely accepted in all serious trading circles and just wanted to offer the info to the MM group. Another important nugget is that cd-r's are much more fragile than regular cds. The playing surface can be scratched far more easily and they are more vulnerable to heat, cold ect. CD's are far more durable than cd-r's, hence cd-r's need more TLC to make it in the long haul. Call me crazy... John ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 10:04:29 -0500 From: "Luca, Joseph" Subject: MM: "Folkwax" review of "A Kiss in Time" Howdy--- This week's "Folkwax" features a review of "A Kiss in Time." The review follows. If you'd like to rate the discs, go to this link. (Tell them "Darboy" sent you.) Ciao, Joe http://www.visnat.com/entertainment/music/folkwax/albumreviews.cfm?CFID=3151 80&CFTOKEN=96559045#R504 A Kiss In Time, (11/12/03) Take two parts of the magnificent heartache Living With Ghosts, five parts of the contradictory thrash and ballad Flaming Red and four parts of last year's stunning revelation 1000 Kisses, cut the songs live at Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium on January 30, 2003 and basically you have the heart and soul of A Kiss In Time. Patty Griffin's spoken voice is as fragile as she is physically small and delicate, and yet when she sings you have to wonder from what place Patty summons all that vocal power and intensity. The post-graveside reflection "Long Ride Home" from 1000 Kisses, opens the disc, and as well as a number of guest performers who I'll mention later. At the Ryman, Patty was supported instrumentally by her current album producer Doug Lancio [guitar], Michael Ramos [keyboards, accordion], Dave Jacques [bass] and Bryan Owings [drums]. Thankfully ATO Records have left Griffin's song introductions intact, since they provide insight into the lyrics, and are at turns filled with pathos and humour. "Christina" (concerning the tragically short life of the late Christina Onassis (1950-1988)) is a fine example of both facets. Griffin's reading of "Peter Pan," one of five gentler Flaming Red tunes, lyrically focuses on the loss of childhood innocence to adulthood and, here, is a marriage of hesitation and emotion. I previously associated Patty's Flaming Red mostly with the hard Rock sounds of crash and burn, but A Kiss In Time tells me that it may be timely to reassess that element of her recorded oeuvre. Mid-disc, on "Be Careful" Patty is joined by Julie Miller on vocal harmony, while Emmylou Harris fulfils that duty on "Mary," the heartfelt tribute to Griffin's grandmother, Mary O'Connor. Back in the mid-nineties days when Living With Ghosts surfaced, it featured a track titled "Let Him Fly," and then along came the Dixie Chicks who curtailed the title and included it on their 1999 album Fly. Here the song forms the first of a three-song concert encore, and is followed by "Nobody's Crying" and "10 Million Miles." The latter cut, a wistful ballad that Griffin describes in her introduction as a "send you on your merry way song" closes this twelve-track collection and is also the only new Patty Griffin composition featured. The song bodes well for the contents of the new studio album that the liner booklet proudly proclaims will be available in "Early 2004." While the CD takes a longing and lingering live look at Griffin's back catalogue, A Kiss In Time is actually a two-disc multi-media delight and comes packaged (initially) with a DVD. The contents of that disc amount the animated video of "Rain," followed by a 30-second-long [Yup! And why?] segment on the making of same, plus the real life video of "Chief" ("The Director's Cut") which was filmed in Brenham and Llano, Texas. In "Chief," Patty appears in at least seven different dresses and in nine different locations (sometimes with guitar, but always singing), as the tale unfolds of the Native American Vietnam veteran who paced the streets of her hometown of Old Town, Maine, when Griffin was a youngster. "Time With Patty" is an approx thirty-minute-long montage that merges a Patty Griffin interview with performance and on the road footage from the 1000 Kisses tour. The "Time...." sub-chapters include "Process Of Songwriting" ("There's no real process, it's up to the sky, water, air and earth" and "I pull stuff out of the muddy pool"), "1000 Kisses The Album," "TV," "Touring" (by far the longest segment and comprehensively insightful), "Stage" ["...being on stage is like a fairy tale"], "'Chief' The Song," "Video," ""Rain" The Song," [Musical] "Influences" (recalling her childhood "my mom sang like an angel," plus there's some footage of Patty recording "Faded Love" for the recently issued Remembering Patsy Cline CD), "Live Album) [aka A Kiss In Time] and "Fans" ("I'm blown away by them, they're amazing and humbling"). The segment titled "The Road" equates to a repeat of "Touring" from "Time With Patty," while, as a live rendition of "Mil Besos" by Patty plays in the background, in "Photos," some fifty still pictures flash on the screen. There's Patty as a child and with her siblings, plus numerous posed and in concert shots. Behind the chapter titled "Extras" is a series of stills that includes "Chief" storyboards, some Patty Griffin artwork and record company promotional items for the 1000 Kisses albums and the singles that it spawned. The DVD is a mixed bag really, with the real meat being located in "Time With Patty" and the two song videos. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 15:35:20 +0000 From: jmphlbat@comcast.net Subject: MM: Writing on CD-R'S The best place I have found for all my questions about CD's and CDR's and recording on them has been http//www.cdrfaq.org This site is updated with new infomation all the time and has helped me out of a few jams Murph ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 21:40:45 +0000 From: garveygirl70@comcast.net Subject: MM: PG & girls on Ellen Show on OXYGEN 11-19-03 Ellen Show again on OXYGEN 11-19-03 at 11:00 PM if ya'll can stay up that late. It's a big theater for her, so I thought I'd spread the word a little bit so she can fill it up. Opening for Tracy is Misty River, an all-woman folk/bluegrass band also from the area. I hear that Tracy is doing more new songs, and I hope to be at this show and the last night of the Songwriters Tour on Monday if I can get over this stupid cold. There's also a show in Eugene at Cafe Paradiso on Friday night (tomorrow) and after that Tracy will be doing a week-long Alaska tour. Then she's taking December off to record her new album. - -Jess Tracy Grammer with Misty River Saturday Nov. 15, 2003 @ 8 pm. Armed with a few of the sassier members of the string family, and a voice as nuanced and strong as you could hope for, Grammer is delivering the songs of the late Dave Carter in a supernatural force that funnels straight through your ear to the deep, deep center of your heart. With meticulous rhythm and lyrics that are as familiar as they are puzzling, these songs have an intellectual and emotional edge to them that most folk music fails to muster. They tell tales spun from an existential cowboy mindset, rife with the beauty of barren landscapes and an awareness of the yet untravelled miles of the soul. The inherent complexity of this music has its grounding in Carter's lyrics but is carried to fruition by Grammer's musicianship. (You can buy a 4 gig Smart Media card now. Lots of money, but we all know that the price will come down...) I write on my CD's with fine Sharpies. The only bad thing I can think of is that my handwriting is so bad. And, if a disc lasts 5-10 years, that's ok. Like someone said, make back ups every once in awhile. Now, my video tapes of my kids when they were young are starting to concern me.... getting them to DVD is pretty spendy, but as old as they are, we may have to bite the bullet and get it done... john in sumner wa ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V7 #294 *********************************
