I've noticed Natalie Maines stays pretty close to Patty's delivery, actually. And while Patty's versions of TOTW and Let Him Fly are way better, Truth No. 2 I feel the Chicks make their own. Honestly, Patty has been given so much exposure through the Dixie Chicks, if I ever meet them (ha, like that would ever happen!) I would thank them for recognizing Patty's genius and beefing up her royalty checks so she can continue to make music, and if I met Dave Matthews or Emmylou Harris, I'd thank them for supporting Patty as well). And, funny enough, it's the other way around for me, I got into the Dixie Chicks from being a Patty fan first. They are an amazingly talented trio who happen to have amazing taste in music. I guess what I should have said was, that the fact that they covered her songs is not what bothers me so much. It's the songs that they chose to cover that bothers me. When they did Let Him Fly, that's flattery. The song's on her cd, so if they cover it, people can still go and get Patty's cd to hear the original version. But that's not the case with the other two songs. They chose songs that Patty worked hard on, actually recorded for a cd, put her blood and sweat into them, and yet they are still unavailable commercially. I think what it then seems like to people hearing it from the Dixie Chicks, is that Patty wrote a song FOR them. As if were just a lyricist. But that's not the case. I'm especially bothered by them doing Top of the World, b/c after all she went through, that song pretty much sumarizes the whole experience. HER experience. She did not write it for the Chicks, but for herself. But they got to release it before she did. I've also noticed that Truth #2 and TotW are two songs that she plays at just about every (normal-length) concert. I don't know what her reason for that is, but you all know that she doesn't perform songs that she can't relate to anymore. So there must be some reason she keeps singing these. They're not just songs she sang at one time, and has pretty much abandoned, so the Chicks decided to revive them. I understand that Patty is very greatful for this, etc. But I wasn't aware that I had to think AS Patty. This is coming from a fan's point of view, and not the artist herself. (little disclaimer there). I hope that clears it up. I wasn't trying to insult the Chicks for playing covers. I just wish they would have covered songs that had actually been released. - -Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2003 17:25:44 EDT From: Voodoowitch313@aol.com Subject: MM: Patty and The Chicks.... The bottom line is, really, that Patty had to "okay" it herself or it wouldn't be happening. For whatever reason.... she chose things to be the way they are. Plus, they're all friends... they all live in the same town. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2003 15:20:48 -0700 From: "Roy Larsen" Subject: MM: How Music Royalties Work Given the lively discussion on the Dixie Chicks' use of Patty's work, I think there are many out on the list that might like to know how music royalties work. You can find a fairly in-depth article about it here: http://howstuffworks.lycoszone.com/music-royalties1.htm The bottom line is that music royalties favor the songwriter. Unlike the performer, the songwriter gets money every time their work is performed or sold (per track). The term "performed" means not just live concerts, but every time it's played on the radio, TV, movie, webcast, etc. If you didn't write the song, your primary opportunity to make money is on unit record sales (usually after the cost of production, promotion, etc.) and the crowds you draw on tour (after hall fees, musician fees, the manager's cut, etc.). The songwriter gets their cut regardless of these burdens or how many turn out for the show. Trust me when I tell you that songwriters WANT their work to be performed. We might all have romanticized views of our favorite artists doing what they do for art sake, but believe me when I tell you, they all have the same mundane bills to pay that we do PLUS the additional expenses associated with the BUSINESS they have chosen to enter. I'm obviously not privy to the financials of either Patty's 1,000 Kisses or The Dixie Chicks' Home, but I would not be surprised if Patty made more *profit* off of the Home related royalties than her own album. As Patty is writing the checks to cover the mixing costs of her upcoming album, I've got an idea she is whispering a thank you to Emily, Martie, and Natalie. And because I would like to get as much fresh Patty material as I can, I am too..... I guess this a good example of how tastes differ between people. I respectfully disagree. I think the Chicks do a great job on Truth 2 and TOTW. Especially Truth 2...the fiddle break just cranks. And Natalie is about the best person to sing it besides Patty. I also think the Chicks found the groove for the vocals that, when compared to the Silver Bell version, was maybe even more into the groove of the song during parts of the verses. Just my opinion of course. I'm not even a huge Chicks fan...just a Home album fan...well, most of it anyway. Still, I'd rather see Patty perform live than anyone else. She's on the player right now even...Tony live...ya baby. - -s > >Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2003 10:53:01 -0500 >From: "Willms, Gregory J." >Subject: MM: Re: Patty-flavored Chicks DVD > >I wouldn't mind the Dixie Chicks covering Patty's songs if they didn't >outright butcher them. _________________________________________________________________ Concerned that messages may bounce because your Hotmail account has exceeded its 2MB storage limit?
