But I thought this was a telling quote: At the Songwriters tour show in Pittsburgh, Mary Chapin Carpenter said "Where would the Dixie Chicks be without you, Patty?" Her response was, "Where would *I* be without *them*??" The royalties she has received have given her a level of independence that she would never have had without them. So, for those of you who want Patty to write and record more, they are helping her write the kind of songs she wants to write without worrying about being on a major label and looking for a hit. I don't necessarily agree with the idea that most people check out who writes the songs that they like. I think most people (not us on this list, who i believe are the more contientious listeners) hear a song on a certain artist's cd and just assume it's theirs until hearing otherwise, or wouldn't really care either way. I think it'd be a minority of people who would check out the liner notes and see that someone else wrote it. Especially in a day that most artists you hear on the radio didn't write the song they're singing/playing. My only point I was making is NOT that the Chicks shouldn't have covered Patty or that it's bad -- just that in doing so, I would hope that as many people as possible become exposed to Patty and find out the incredible talent she possesses. So I tried to spread the word. I support Patty's music being covered by musicians like the Chicks, who have talent and who stand for something and who are able to spread Patty's good word out to a mass public. :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You're gonna dance to jah music, dance, We're gonna dance to jah music, dance, Forget your troubles and dance, Forget your sorrows and dance, Forget your sickness and dance, Forget your weakness and dance. . ." -- Bob Marley >From: "Jim Murphy" >To: , >Subject: MM: RE: Re: Patty-flavored Chicks DVD >Date: Thu, 23 Oct 2003 19:41:47 -0400 > >The Chicks have taken the songs of Patty and others and have added their >flavor to them. If I were Patty, I would be honoured to have a band as extraordinarily talented as "the Chicks" singing my tunes. On a side note, I went through a big Dixie Chicks phase last winter, fell in love with the Patty Griffin cuts on the albums, and have since discovered all the Patty albums--both released and unreleased. I am now completely enraptured with Patty's divine songs. So, through the Dixie Chicks, I became a Patty convert. :) Best to all, Adam in Toronto >From: "Luca, Joseph" >To: "'mad-mission@smoe.org'" >Subject: MM: Patty-flavored Chicks DVD >Date: Thu, 23 Oct 2003 08:57:43 -0400 > >Howdy--- > >From this week's Folkwax: "The Dixie Chicks will commemorate their 2003 >"Top of the World Tour" by releasing a concert DVD and a two-CD album, both >titled Top of the World, on November 25. In fact, I would have not become a total Patty fan if it were not for hearing the Chicks' Home CD. When I realized that Truth 2 and Top of the World were written by Patty, I ran out and began buying her records. Since I became a Patty fan I have bought all of her albums, some of them multiple times as gifts to my friends in an effort to share the music. Plus now I go to all her gigs I can get to, even if I have to drive many hours on end to get there. I have also seen the Chicks mention on national TV that Patty wrote those songs and they have all said that Patty is their favorite singer/songwriter. I think it was Emily who said that Flaming Red was thier favorite album and that they listen to it all the time, as I do. So I think Patty and all of us should be extremely happy that Patty gets this additional exposure and that Patty gets the royalties from having two of her songs on one of the best selling records of last year. Too bad CMT isn't playing the TOTW video more often, at least I haven't seen it played more than once on cmt, although I can't really stomach watching the irritating geeks who dominate cmt playlists so I may have missed any replays. Probably has to do with the insane political climate we're in where cmt doesn't want to rock the political boat. C'mon November 13th. I have front row and will be there with M&Ms in hand. - -Steve > >Date: Thu, 23 Oct 2003 18:34:42 EDT >From: Guajillo@aol.com >Subject: MM: Re: Patty-flavored Chicks DVD > >Coming out of lurk mode in disbelief. Apologies to those on digest, but assume they're all gone, will email if not. They cost me #2.99 and I imagine postage will be the equivalent of #1 so that works out at about $6 US dollars - will mail with address when I get it sorted!
