Just got home from seeing Patty. First off, I want to say it was great meeting everyone who was there, Don, Dave, Steph, Janet, Murph (sorry for mistaking you for a waiter ;) ), Jen, and everyone else whose names I can't think of right now...sorry. Now for Patty... It was a great concert, as always. Had pretty good seats, centered. At first it seemed like the whole concert her voice would be drowned out by the music, but she did plenty of solo stuff, and her guitar sounded extra powerful tonight. She even played Flaming Red alone on her guitar, and I didn't miss the band. I didn't know she could do that... She played Falling Icicles which was great, as well as another song that's going on her new cd, called The Kite Song, which she played solo on the piano. Gorgeous song...can't wait for the cd. I assumed she had played the song before, but Don said he never heard it...so maybe this was her first time playing it? Her guitar was flashing me at times, and I kept thinking how I hope it continues to always be her guitar that's blinding, and never flashing lights. Emylou Harris accompanied her for Falling Down, and didn't really know the words. But she jumped in anyways a few times. (With a name like Emylou, I was excpecting a whole different look, even tho I haven't really heard her stuff.) Buddy and Julie Miller seemed even more lost than Emylou. I don't think they were expecting having to go up there and sing with her... All in all, it was a great concert, but as usual it went too fast. I was expecting a longer concert for Carnegie Hall...at least a second encore.... Once again, it was nice meeting everyone. - -Lisa - -------------- "Everything's an effort when you doubt the purpose of your soul" -- Bree Sharp, "Sleep Forever" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Oct 2003 08:57:43 -0400 From: "Luca, Joseph" Subject: MM: Patty-flavored Chicks DVD Howdy--- From this week's Folkwax: "The Dixie Chicks will commemorate their 2003 "Top of the World Tour" by releasing a concert DVD and a two-CD album, both titled Top of the World, on November 25. A real pleasure to meet Jen and her traveling Swedish masseuse Sven from Chicago. Also nice to meet bKing of the Lurkersb Connecticut Jerry. Has anyone else noticed that every single Patty fan is unbelievably good looking? Between Karlabs thigh highs and the good Dr. Jordanbs fur coat, well, itbs a good thing Sandra keeps me on a short leash. Murph in a Tux. Forget about it! But enough about legs, fur and tails. On to the show. I thought that Emmy Lou said it about as good as you could say it when introducing Patty. How you have been around and you doubt anyone will come up with something that makes you happy about music again. Then one day you hear a voice singing words in a way that exposes your nerve endings. I am paraphrasing here, but you get the picture. Very well said and very true. The venue was just about as good as it gets. The acoustics were so good that Patty warned people bnot to fartb in fear it would be heard. On a scale of one 1-5 bottles of pills, I rate this one about 3.9. A nice eclectic mix of old and new and a rendition of bFalling Downb that had the Evil One wiping a wet one from his cheek. The two new tunes were excellent. bStolen Carb killed as always. Ibm always trying to guess what she will start with. I have yet to be right. Last night bGoodbyeb. Buddy Julie and Emmy, singing back up on bMaryb. Saaweeeet! Finish with bSweet Lorraineb. Next thing ya know, youbre waking up in Jersey Thursday morning, with a little French Martini lingering in your mouth. The show passes too fast and the next show is always too slow in coming. I wonder if it is possible to find this Demo for sale on the internet somehow? I rarely surf those CD store sites - I just run down to my local cd store- Amoeba here in Berkeley- so I don't know. Don sent one to me and I loved this song. I hope that Patty keeps it out for the next Cd- it is soooo beautiful. I had to listen to it a dozen times close to tears too. Strangely altho about death and loss, it is a positive view of death - with imagery of hope for some future existence. It is ok, you can rest now. I hate to see this song slip by with few people knowing it so I am glad it is being passed around. I was just thinking about this song this morning. Thinking about songs I wish she would pull out of the closet and put back in her set lists, like Shells, and Under These Clouds and You Decided and Little God and Standing. The Long Stair would would get their attention all right as a new song in concert! The silence would be deafening. Pin drop stuff. Chills. I hope it doesn't come across as hostile. Only a small proportion of the songs performed by the Dixie Chick's are their own work. So I was wondering if it bugged you equally that they don't give credit to Randy Sharp, J.D. Souther, Darrell Scott, Tim O'Brien, and all the other "lesser known" singer/songwriters they've used on their albums and on tour? As with Patty, all of these talented singer/songwriters have followings too. The primary thing is that their music reaches as many people as possible. They are all thrilled just to get their songs released on a best selling album. So I'd like to thank the Dixie Chicks for recognizing great talent and treating their work so well. It's certainly a major key to their success. I feel like when Patty releases TOTW herself or Truth #2, people are going to think "oh, Patty Griffin is doing a cover a Dixie Chicks song..." blah. That is IF people even get to hear Patty's stuff without buying her cd. And that reminded me to do something I'd been meaning to do for a while. I'm not sure how often other people read the reviews on Amazon before buying or checking out an album, but I read them frequently. Their version of "Landslide" is constantly played on the radio, and most people don't even realize it's not theirs. But if it was just that, you could blame it on the radio stations, I guess, for not playing their other songs. But they named their tours after songs that aren't theirs either. Doing a cover is one thing. But focusing your whole career around other ppl's talent is a whole different story. Those who are interetsed enough in a song will seek out its' origin. I can't remember the last time I bought a CD and didn't immediately check out who penned each track. I have always been most interested in lyrical content in an album and therefore read this. Certainly I am not alone here. I don't even like the Dixie Chicks but have bought their albums just to hear their versions of Patty's songs as well as their covers of Stevie Nicks, etc. The fact that they can move the music to people who would not otherwise ever hear of "a Patty Griffin" is groovy with me. They just might remember her name from the album notes and but her next time they see her CD in their lcoal record store. Additionally, it certainly can't hurt monetarily to have one or two of your songs on a multi platinum record by anyone. I will now get off of my soap box!
